to hate the way the chefs on Masterchef always say 'plate of food' instead of just 'food' or 'dish'?
I HATE IT.

They're an accommodating trouser.

Many years ago I listened, confused, to someone talking about 'a trans-seasonal trouser'.

I know several chefs and they do this because they say it spreads it more evenly and makes it less likely to clump in one area.

Or they can employ a skilled technique, takes years of learning, move your hand around when distributing the salt.

Redrosesposies · 20/03/2026 19:28

Does anyone know why Jamie Oliver feels the need to salt 'from a height'
Is it a clever technique to garner a saltier flavour perhaps?

Ugh pantie almost makes me lose my dinner! It's such a twee, sickening word!

I fucking hate it.

8 had to switch womans hour earlier because the guest kept saying ' if that makes sense?' after every sentence. So annoying

That is women’s language. We will still need feminism until no woman ever says things like that again…

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/03/2026 15:33

Thing is, I could see that happening.

Alan Shearer, for years, was incapable of saying ‘the club’ and could only say ‘the football club’ which for some reason enraged me.

On a sports theme, “in the mix” gets me going. I absolutely hate it. They said it a lot at the diving events at the Olympics (maybe I got triggered as it was that knobhead Tom Daley saying it, but it does my head in still).

burlingtondrinks · 20/03/2026 18:56

I get enraged every time someone says ‘in any way, shape, fashion or form’ as in ‘I did not steal that thing in any way, shape, fashion or form’. Just SHUT UP!

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/03/2026 18:52

It reminds of what train drivers say: “The next station stop is London Bridge”. Do they think passengers will misunderstand if they say “the next station is ….” It has always baffled me.

The phrase thats getting on my tit's atm is when a crime against a person has been committed, and someone charged, they say the "alleged victim". They are the victim. That's it.

It's 'alleged' if the case hasn't gone to court yet. Legally, the media has to say that if it's still at the allegation stage.

LaMarschallin · 20/03/2026 16:02

I hate the "yummy" emoji - the little yellow fucker, beaming, with its tongue sticking out of the corner of its mouth.

It reminds me of an ex-friend who only ate about four meals (sausage and mash, very plain Shepherd's Pie, chicken and chips and chicken Chow Mein) which she supplemented with custard creams.
Make one of those dishes and you'd be "rewarded" by her running her tongue wetly round her mouth and making a massive "SHLUUUURRRP!" noise.
If anybody stupidly offered an alternative she'd snap "No - don't like it!" or just make a "Bleurgh" noise. She wouldn't tell them what she did like; they were supposed to realise any other food was unacceptable.

WiddlinDiddlin · 20/03/2026 15:57

I seem to be noticing even more 'filler' waffle in Masterchef lately. I think having got rid of GreG Nonces innuendo and drooling they don't really know what to do.

Current phrases really getting on my tits like never before:

  • Point of difference - but if there is one, it will be complained about as it doesn't go with whatever it is the chef made.
  • 'It's kind of like'... and then goes on to describe something it is either NOTHING like or actually IS that exact thing.
deepseaargyllfish · 20/03/2026 15:54

Yeh this gets on my tits, too. They said it a few times in last night’s episode.

Lillers · 20/03/2026 15:53

The one that’s bugging me at the minute is that they seem to all now be using “cook” as a noun: “This is a really important cook”, or “I really need to impress with the next cook.”

RawBloomers · 20/03/2026 15:52

I find often repeated phrases annoying. I sort of see some sense in a show like master chef, where presentation is a huge part of the expectation, to emphasise that. Plating the food is how that’s normally termed so saying plate of food does fit in to the show’s ethos. But that probably doesn’t stop it grating!

NotAWurstToIt · 19/03/2026 21:37

I don’t watch Masterchef, but I feel your pain with sports commentators who feel the need to say ‘years of age’ all the time e.g “she’s 35 years of age”. It’s 35, she’s 35 ffs!

In fairness in the context there's understood ellipsis in "she's 35". It could be years of age or stone in weight or inches tall.

Graceyfields · 20/03/2026 15:00

Pollinators all the time. I know it’s correct but just say bees

Lots of other insects are considered as important as bees for various types of important food pollination (and do a large percentage of all pollinating). Bees are not the only pollinators.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 20/03/2026 15:42

Haven't seen MS lately, but when it was John and Greg, John used to annoy me when he would say something like "you need to impress Greg and I".

Agree with whoever queried food having things 'running through' it. Nobody said this until 5 minutes ago.
