To be relieved with the House of Lords decision?

I have just seen on the news that the House of Lords have approved the bid to decriminalise abortion. I am so relieved. I can’t believe in a supposed modern society women are still subject to Victorian laws on their own body.

i wish they had gone one step further and enshrined a woman’s legal right to an abortion to help add protections if Nigel and his gang of loons get in and try to pull what they did in America.

But overall I see this as such a win for women everywhere and a welcome change that will remove fear from lots of lives!

Aibu to feel this way? It’s a scary world as a woman at the moment!

32,000, who may be being born into poverty or abuse because their parents couldn't afford them or are not able to care for them. 32,000 more children who may end up in the criminal justice system because of poor upbringing.

Just because more children are being born doesn't mean they will all end up happy and healthy. Yes things can happen after you have children but if you know you can't cope with them to start with what chance do they really have of a good life.

Exactly.

Abortion is healthcare for women, not murder.

fantastic that this has passed, as early as possible, as late as necessary.

I agree

But it is 'forced birth'. If you force someone to continue a pregnancy they do not want, you are forcing them to give birth - with all the consequences attached. Pregnancy and birth carry far greater health risks for a woman than safe early abortion. Anti abortion activists don't like to admit that they are in favour of forcibly putting women's health at risk.

Equally yes - abortion is killing a baby. Sometimes in life, it is necessary to make tough decisions.

I am militantly pro choice.

You can make the argument that pregnancy isn't "forced" it's a natural bodily process that occurs and the end result to what happens after sperm meets egg.

The same reason if you eat food you're not "forced" to defecate after, it's the natural consequence.

Glad you agree on the second part. I wish we could discuss the issue from both sides and not descend into horrible name calling.

Totally agree.

My late mother was a nurse in the early 1950's. She saw the consequences of desperate women driven to illegal, backstreet abortions. They were sometimes fatal.

And this was the view of all those in America who agreed with Row vrs Wade being overturned.
Yet now they are finding out the hard way that to deny women the right to abortion also denies women the right to life saving treatment in the event that an abortion is necessary to save the life of the women. There have already been deaths of women since in States where abortion is illegal.
Many do not consider the whole consequences when they want to ban abortion.

Edited

Even when an abortion is not necessary because the woman is miscarrying anyway. Some have been forced to bleed out in the car park because medical staff don't dare render assistance lest they be prosecuted.

Boomer55 · 20/03/2026 17:00

I agree totally with giving women autonomy over their bodies.. I just hope the HOL take the same with with assisted dying bill, and give women and men the same autonomy. 🤞

OP the decision is madness! I am beyond furious. No woman should be having a termination beyond 28 weeks unless her life is at serious risk !

I defy you to have the same opinion if you had worked in an abortion theatre watching fully formed little hands coming out down a suction tube!
Every one of the people that voted for abortion to term should be forced to watch just one actual suction abortion. Shocking

I have. Multiple times. And I am absolutely 100% certain that in each of those cases it was the right thing that happened - for various different but heartbreaking reasons.

Abortion is healthcare.

countbackfromten · 20/03/2026 16:57

Abortions where gestation is 24 weeks or over account for a very small number of abortions (0.1% of the total). There were 276 such abortions in 2021.

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/abortion-statistics-for-england-and-wales-2021/abortion-statistics-england-and-wales-2021

There were 565 (16.8%) ground E abortions at 22 weeks and over and 274 (8.1%) ground E abortions at 24 weeks and over.

Ground E is - there is substantial risk that if the child were born it would suffer from such physical or mental abnormalities as to be seriously handicapped.

Abortion is healthcare. Abortion post 24 weeks is very rare and from my experience is usually for the most heartbreaking reasons imaginable. How dare anyone judge a woman, or in fact a girl, for having to go through that.

I agree but an abortion debate on here always go wrong. Name calling. "Forced birther". "Baby killer"

Not sure why this thread was briefly removed, but there you go.

I’m glad lots of other women feel the same as me and are comforted by this decision

It's the same procedure as an ERPC for an incomplete miscarriage and not performed at that gestational stage - first trimester up to about 9 weeks is usually through medication, ERPC up to about 13+6. After that point, it's a D&E until the end of the second trimester and for past 24 weeks, an induction.

So, apart from the emotional content of your post, which is inherently true because it's you describing your emotional response to terminations, pretty much every else you said was completely inaccurate.

So if your daughter was pregnant through rape would anyone really say don't have an abortion? I mean you could say that as long as you wanted no further relationship with your child.
That's obviously an extreme case but any women who doesn't want a baby should be allowed to have an abortion.
Better that than a child being born to a mother who doesn't want it, doesn't love it and therefore doesn't treat them well

A healthy foetus would be born and be a child if there is not the intervention to kill them.

I simply do not see how anyone can think that abortion isn’t murder.

YABU not to understand that people can have different opinions on the interface between the rights of the unborn and the rights of mothers, and anyone who doesn’t conform to your opinion is a “loon”. It’s not a very nuanced POV…

Oh ok so you’d probably not agree with my abortion at 17 weeks when I realised I was pregnant with my rapists child? Would you continue with a pregnancy conceived in that way? Possibly looking a lot like your rapist?

I was desperate to have a baby and it almost killed me but I couldn’t cope with the idea of having a baby conceived whilst I was raped

Czerwonitz · 20/03/2026 01:58

Agree. Abortion is legitimate healthcare for any reason.
(Parliament cannot bind its successors tho... The price of freedom is indeed eternal vigilance!)

I guess you've never seen an abusive relationship then...

Well yes I have, but I have never seen a 34 week pregnant woman get a new boyfriend.

Your made up scenario is so far fetched as to be hilarious.

It’s not just their body tho is it? It’s someone else’s they are ending.

Someone who has zero rights until the time that their body is outside their mother's. That's the law. And I'm glad of it. Women in the western world (I have little knowledge of elsewhere so can't speak of that) have historically been at the "bottom of the pile" in terms of social status. To suggest that a woman's status should come below even that of someone who doesn't actually exist in their own right yet, is abhorrent.

Anyone else wondering if there is some sort of algorithm at work that that flags up these sort of threads to the "Birth at any price" lot?

There is so much AI online now, it's best to only engage in anything here or elsewhere as a form of entertainment really and not get particularly invested. You never know if you're talking to an AI bot posting controversial comments to drive interactions and bring traffic to the site.

Belinda5000 · 20/03/2026 01:26

I can discuss how I feel without being rude and give reasons.
1.men are bad about supporting
2.birth control doesn't always work and fathers push for abortion an abortions has be one of the toughest things a woman does. Have you ever thought about rape or incest can you imagine giving birth to such a child.

twentyeightfishinthepond · 20/03/2026 01:23

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/03/2026 00:10

I wonder how many "abortion is murder" posters are also on the "we need to cut the benefit bill/keep the two child cap" threads.

Oh it’ll be plenty!

Belinda5000 · 20/03/2026 01:21

Are any of you going to support the child that the woman can't afford to have?

Belinda5000 · 20/03/2026 01:20

Every woman should have a choice

Belinda5000 · 20/03/2026 01:19

Do you believe in a woman having an abortion when her life is in danger by having the baby?

Belinda5000 · 20/03/2026 01:18

I think women should have the right to abortion
