How much weight do you lose for your wedding?

Getting married in 6 months. Like most brides I want to look my best. I’m fairly happy with my figure as I’m a natural hourglass (a lot of my weight is on my boobs and butt) but wouldn’t mind being a bit more toned and leaner. But I still want to look like me. I told my family I want to lost 18 pounds and they think that is insane (currently 145, 5ft 3.5). I think that’s a normal amount to lose for a bride. Nothing extreme extreme.

edit: how much weight did* you lose for your wedding

I think it sounds fine but would focus more on toning etc than the number as over a stone loss could cause you to look at bit raggedy if not done in a healthy way. To look your best on the day 10lb in a healthy way may look better than 18lb in a quick way iyswim! As pp have said no need to share with others and to be honest they can’t win - what if they had said ‘oh great idea - at least 18lb- I think’ that would not have been nice either!

I thought three pounds a month wasn’t insane

It's not.

But your question is.

That and the fact you're discussing your weight loss plans with other people.

I'm the same height as you and currently weigh about 8st 10lbs.

I'm slim but I'm certainly not 'skinny' and nothing about my weight is insane.

Tings · 19/03/2026 12:31

None, I didn't need to.

But if you're 5ft 3" and 10 stone, losing a stone sounds completely normal??

If I were you, I'd stop discussing such personal things with others.

I mean even this thread is pretty weird because why does it matter what others lost?

Nothing as I was less than 8 stone then.
You're the same height as me and currently the same weight. In an ideal world I like to be between half a stone and a stone lighter. I would have thought an 8lb loss is more doable and realistic than your target and should still give you a more svelte look.

WorstPaceScenario · 19/03/2026 12:26

None. My husband loved me exactly as I was then, and I have no desire to conform to some notion that women are only worthy if they're a slim an conventionally attractive bride.

I've since lost a considerable amount of weight because I wanted to, and I still don't regret not losing weight for my wedding

ComtesseDeSpair · 19/03/2026 12:26

It’s really up to you. If you’re not happy with your weight generally and think this is the kick up the backside you needed to get around to losing some then it’s just going to benefit you long term; but you do need to be careful not to make the run-up to the wedding stressful and unenjoyable because you’re overly focussed on a particular number on the scale rather than just seeing how you look In your dress at a particular point and feeling good in it.

I didn’t as I didn’t need / want to, but I did put in extra weights sessions at the gym so my shoulders and upper back would look great in my halterneck backless dress.

latetothefisting · 19/03/2026 12:24

It's about 12.5% or one eighth of your entire body weight, isn't it? I wouldn't say it was "extreme extreme" but can see why they thought it sounded like quite a lot, if they already see you as slim/a healthy weight.

Obviously it's not really any of their business but once you bring it up you can't blame people for responding. I wouldn't have mentioned a set amount, mainly because you then don't have to justify if you don't meet it!

A stone and a half isn't much to lose when you weigh 20 stone, but quite hard at 10 stone! I definitely wouldn't be choosing a dress on the basis that you 'need' to lose that much to feel happy in it, for example.

How much is your future husband planning to lose?

Lorc · 19/03/2026 12:23

All my friends have definitely hit the gym / eaten healthier pre their wedding. I didn’t think it was that uncommon

I can’t deny all the very slim brides on Pinterest have probably influenced me too much

None. Your future husband lives you exactly as you are, so why would you want to change your appearance in any way?
Don't fall for this sexist nonsense, OP, because I guarantee that the groom isn't worried about losing weight for your wedding!

SJM1988 · 19/03/2026 12:20

I lost 2.5 stone within 6 months before my wedding....but I was 14stone and overweight. I got back into md healthy range

Mmmchocolatebuttons · 19/03/2026 12:20

Almost 20 pounds is a lot to lose just to look more "toned and leaner", especially when you're already a healthy weight.

Why focus on the number? Just eat well and be active. Looking toned is about building muscle mass.

Charlotte120221 · 19/03/2026 12:19

if you lose that much you'll have issues with getting the dress altered to fit?

18 pounds is a huge weight loss in 6 months?!

Honestly? think i did lose a few pounds but nothing like that....

McFlump · 19/03/2026 12:18

I didn’t lose weight for my wedding.

TheCurious0range · 19/03/2026 12:18

I didn't lose any either but I was a slim toned size 10 then!
