How much weight do you lose for your wedding?

Getting married in 6 months. Like most brides I want to look my best. I’m fairly happy with my figure as I’m a natural hourglass (a lot of my weight is on my boobs and butt) but wouldn’t mind being a bit more toned and leaner. But I still want to look like me. I told my family I want to lost 18 pounds and they think that is insane (currently 145, 5ft 3.5). I think that’s a normal amount to lose for a bride. Nothing extreme extreme.

edit: how much weight did* you lose for your wedding

OP posts:

I tried to go on a diet a few months before my wedding, crashed and burned, and ended up putting on weight - shouldn’t have bothered trying

Winter2020 · 19/03/2026 16:56

If you want to lose a few pounds do it slowly and sensibly. If you crash diet you will lose muscle leading to weight gain when you begin eating more normally.

If you are mostly happy with your figure but want to look your best I would aim to lose 5lb and tone up with exercise rather than 18lb.

Mariooooocart · 19/03/2026 16:45

I got engaged on holiday so had already lost a stone and was down to my happy weight so had no weight to lose.

I got married a year later and maintained this until about 6 weeks from the wedding where I lost half a stone via stress. I had to have last minute dress alterations.

NorthernDancer · 19/03/2026 16:05

I lost a stone through stress in the six months between proposal and wedding. I then took ill on our way to our honeymoon and spent the week in bed, so lost some more.

Grammarninja · 19/03/2026 15:39

Stress led to me losing about 6 pounds by accident. My husband went on a serious diet and lost about 4 stone only to replace it with 6 stone within the year. Don't crash diet to look like someone else on your wedding day. If you have an hour glass figure, you're already winning the body stakes! Don't feck your metabolism up for one day x

Auroraloves · 19/03/2026 15:38

I put on a bit as I was pregnant, I wish I looked like that now though.

just don’t lose too much as the
seamstress will only be able to take in so much on your wedding dress

ainsleysanob · 19/03/2026 15:34

Nothing! I was a 22 year old siren when I got married!

Lampzade · 19/03/2026 15:27

I lost two stone in three months for my wedding and have never regretted it
l didn’t want to be one of those people who can’t bear to look at their wedding photos
Other photos you can throw away if you dislike them, you can’t do this with your wedding photos
Lose weight if you want to
Eat well and do some weight training and walking

JLou08 · 19/03/2026 15:21

None. I actually put a few lbs on. Absolutely mad that you want to lose weight when you're happy with your figure. Just because a lot of people do it doesn't mean we all should.

HappyAsASandboy · 19/03/2026 15:13

I didn’t lose any weight. I bought a dress that fit 6 months before my wedding and then stayed the same size.

Same. I think it's a nuts idea. Unless you plan on maintaining your weight loss after the wedding.

HugoThatway · 19/03/2026 15:17

Going by BMI you are overweight.
18lbs in 6 months is fine and you'll be in the middle of the healthy BMI range.

dastardlydani · 19/03/2026 15:14

Annoyingly I never weighed myself but reckon I was about 9 stone (5ft 9). I was super stressed!

So maybe lost 10-14lbs. The only thing I actively did was really tone up.

minipie · 19/03/2026 15:12

I can see wanting to lose a few pounds as you are small (I am too) but I wouldn’t do it “for the wedding”. Do it because you want to be healthier and stronger long term - maybe the wedding is an excuse to give you the momentum.

I do know brides who lost too much and their dress didn’t fit very well on the day (gaping at the bust especially) so be careful about dress fitting issues.

18lb in six months is 3lb a month.

18 divided by 6 = 3...

If you read the post, I said the previous posters assertion and the OPs intent were both unrealistic.

Kirridge · 19/03/2026 14:55

Birdsongisangry · 19/03/2026 14:53

2lb a week minimum is not a realistic amount to lose for a woman whose starting point is 145lb. Honestly I'd say 3lb a month, every month, including when getting closer to goal wait would be optimistic.

How is 18 pounds a huge weight loss in 6 months?
If you diet sensiblly you can lose 2lb a week minimim, so 18 pounds in less than 2 months is normal not extreme.

EggplantSurprise · 19/03/2026 13:54

None. I think it's utterly bizarre that (a) you assume every woman getting married does this as a matter of course and (b) that you announce your programme of weight loss to your family and friends.

asnmum · 19/03/2026 13:52

losing that much would be fine - if it’s what you want - as you are currently just at the top end of healthy weight/into slightly overweight for your height. That looks very different on different people. Do what you want to do not what you think you should do or others do. If I were you I will focus on healthy diet so your skin glows and exercise that will tone the bits your dress will highlight - eg upper arms. Numbers and scales are not so important.

I lost about 7lb for my wedding by doing the above. Was within healthy range before and after that.

toomuchfaff · 19/03/2026 13:47

In my pre wedding days; a very good friend said to me to not put yourself under additional pressure to lose weight. And she was right, you have enough "stresses".

You also have timelines - the dress has to be ordered sometimes months before, and fittings are usually done a few times in the preceeding months, the last fitting is usually a few weeks before so definitely no weight loss in that time.

If youre happy as you are then order the dress and stop worrying about it; have a beautiful day

Kirridge · 19/03/2026 13:47

It depends on the type of dress you are going for. If you are buying it nearer to the time that's fine. If you have already bought it, discuss with the shop/fitter how much it can be adjusted.

Dress aside, lose weight if you want to (would you want to anyway, even if there was no wedding)? It sounds like you could lose 18lb and still be well within the healthy range for your height. 3lb a month is not a lot, but it is a long time to keep it up for iyswim. I might personally go for 4lb a month for a shorter time, so you can just maintain your new weight for the month leading up to the wedding and make sure your dress fits!

Charlotte120221 · 19/03/2026 12:19

if you lose that much you'll have issues with getting the dress altered to fit?

18 pounds is a huge weight loss in 6 months?!

Honestly? think i did lose a few pounds but nothing like that....

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 19/03/2026 13:39

I didn’t lose any on purpose but lose I did not a lot thankfully.

your at the high end for your weight and height so you don’t need to lose weight unless you want too which is normal for a wedding.

so your just influenced by pics and many of them will be tweaked and unrealistic so please bare that in mind too.

do also remember if you lose 18 pounds will you have time to get the dress refitted.

blipblopblip · 19/03/2026 13:37

I did lose weight before my wedding, I was unhappy after two kids and I wanted to feel confident. I absolutely would do it again in a heartbeat. If you are doing it for you and how you feel don’t let other people make you feel bad about it if it will help you feel more confident on the day. However nobody needs to lose weight for their wedding and brides look amazing on their day no matter what size they are. I think it’s more common losing weight now as people are getting married older and often have kids etc which doesn’t help with weight etc, I definitely was bigger than I was in my 20’s pre kids and wanted to feel like my best self.

Peonies12 · 19/03/2026 13:29

I didn't lose weight. I did focus on feeling my best and having lots of energy, so I did increase exercise and reduce alcohol. if you want to lose weight, fine, but you don't need to tell others. Also you can get toned without needing to lose weight. Consider if you are having a dress altered as well!
