Neighbour has put their rubbish in my bin

@Erin1975It would potentially be an issue in my area. If the lids on our bins aren’t COMPLETELY closed, the binmen won’t empty them. Our bins are always full each week, and usually have to be squashed down to make sure the lids close properly, so if someone put another bag in the top, my bin wouldn’t get emptied for another two weeks.

On my street and other streets I have lived on before, once you put your bin out you are saying you are done with it. Everyone is happy for people to fill them up. It is the easiest, most low energy ‘good neighbour’ thing to do.
If you moved to our street and came around complaining we would all think you were crazy.

Maybe its a one off as bins was getting emptied, and thought fuck it it will all be gone in a bit.

Honestly it wouldn't bother me at all, as you said all bins were put out ready to be collected.

Doesn't everyone do this? They certainly do in my street. Once I've put the bin out, I couldn't care less if one of the neighbours fills it up with something. It's getting emptied in the morning.

Well, everyday is a school day as the saying goes. I didn’t know any domestic waste collection on the UK was determined by weight. Off to Google where this happens.

Well in that case focus on your real problems and stop dwelling over a bag of rubbish in the bin that's about to be taken away anyway.

I can't imagine getting my knickers in a twist about something so unimportant.

My neighbour has a big family. I live alone. They have way more rubbish than me, and I would rather they use the space in my bin, than leave rubbish around for another two weeks.

I just assumed this was normal, an no-one asks "permission" beforehand. How ridiculous. They would be messaging me every bin day otherwise.

You are absolutely over reacting here! If they had come into your drive/garden to do this then yeah maybe a wee door knock. But assuming your bins are identical out on the street does it really matter? And is it really “in your name?” Dunno about yours but bin men in my area don’t inspect the contents of our bins 😂

It is the rule with my neighbours (who are unlikely to be dumping dead bodies in my wheelie bin) that our bins are o the pavement for collection - then we can put in bagged rubbish of our own bins are full.

Its neighbourly, prevents rats, makes fuck all difference to me or my bin.

Ok that’s fair enough if you didn’t have room for your own rubbish - check the other bins and stick it on one of them.

Why on earth would this be her biggest issue? Was there a memo that only one's most important concern can be posted?

Where I use to live neighbours would ask in the WhatsApp group, it's only common courtesy. We have to put our bins out before a certain time which I do but will often add a bag if they are collected late and I'd be pretty pissed off if the bin had been filled by someone else

That is exactly what I would do.

Unless you have agreed with your neighbours to use your bins communally, to just put your rubbish in someone else’s bin is extremely rude.

YANBU if somebody else filled your bin and there wasn't enough room for your own rubbish. I would take the bag out and place it nearby, although our local council regard that as fly tipping. They will either take it or go through it to see if there is any clues as to who left it, and then do them for fly tipping.

It does affect you if it means that you can't get rid of your own rubbish.

Rubbish is rubbish and they obviously couldn’t fit it in theirs. I can see why you would be annoyed though still. My neighbour did that when they needed to get rid of things that really should have gone down the dump, but too lazy to do it despite having a bf with more vehicles than brains. The way I see it, we are all paying council tax so if for example you needed to fill your bin up that week, I take it we are talking about black bin not recycling? As that’s what I mean.
Then where am I supposed to put mine, if my neighbour has filled theirs and mine up 🤔

I wouldn't even give this a second thought... neighbour has probably ran out of space, and there's space in yours.. what's the big deal?

Round our way the bin men go round ahead of the truck - sometimes by a good half hour or so- moving rubbish from bin to bin, so they will (e.g) fill up half empty bins with bags from others, meaning that there are fewer bins to pull out when the truck comes round. Could it be something like that? Just before you go accusing anyone.

You haven’t clarified whether this has actually caused any problems?

Did you still have room for your extra bag?

Did your bin still get collected?

Have you been arrested for improper disposal of a dead body ‘in your name’?

I would be annoyed and have been over the years in fact for one reason a neighbour was putting a sneakt bag of general waste into my recyling bin the odd time and the bin company stopped taking it and for another my general waste bin charges are based on weight.

I agree it's irritating. But as long as it's not a restricted item that means the bin won't be emptied. I'd probably not bristle for long.

It MAY be just normal rubbish, but then again it might not be. If they do it once, they'll do it again.
