Charltonstrek · 18/03/2026 10:30

Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

You'll have to ask Spaniards. Maybe they're just tired of hypocrisy.

So you can understand how Spaniards may get tired of the influx of other nationalities who do not learn the language or integrate yet refuse to see how anyone in this country can feel the same way? Isn't that hypocrisy?

At least in Spain migrants are legal and have documents stating who they are.

Are you dismissing their concerns about immigration as simply being "tired of hypocrisy"?

Their concern about the effects British and German tourism and second homes are having on their housing supply and costs? No, I'm not dismissing it at all.

Oh well they must be xenophobes/racists/haterz then if they're demonstrating about other nationalities, yes?

I was replying to a pp who said 'All to soon being called far right and/or racist become meaningless in the same way that transphobia has become a meaningless word as everything is transphobic'

It's all there in the posts you quoted. I don't think trans issues had been discussed either but here we are, threads develop and evolve.

Nothing is there. The post you're referring to does not have any examples of people in the thread calling people racists for campaigning against immigration.

It's all smoke and mirrors from you and that poster, with no substance.

They're not all welcome, the Spanish have had mass demos about Brits in Spain.

It is bizarre how stating that we don't want thousands of young, fighting age men entering the country illegally from places full of warped ideology and extremists means we are racist.

Can you quote to where this was said in the thread? Because I've been here for the whole thread and I didn't see this at all.

No they are not living off the Spanish tax payer. They have to have a non lucrative visa and private health insurance. So they have to prove they have enough income to provide for themselves and any dependants. This is why they are generally welcome in a Spanish town as they are boosting the economy and not seen to be on the take. Very different to the UK.

The simple fact is even on this thread where some posters are bringing up the level of immigration and the problems its causing they are being called racist, far right reform voters etc.
Yes some of the comments are borderline anti Islam (any actual islamaphobia would have been deleted) but the accusations of racism and far right reform voters is thrown at everyone.
It might not fit with the far left narrative but its true when you lie and smear everyone who disagrees with you as phobic, bigoted, racist or far right you create a situation where those words become meaningless and drive people who would normally be left wing or centrist to the right and far right. The far left are driving the rise in racism that the far right are exploiting.
Maybe if the far left would stop all the name calling and abusive tactics and actually listened to the valid concerns of most people we could come to a reasonable solution that didn't involve open borders or removal of all immigrants. But until the far left stop all the smear campaigns and violent disorder they will keep creating the far right problems

How exactly is a massive display of your own culture/ religious beliefs in a host country automatically a sign of integration?

Because many other communities were invited to share the festivities and food.

Muslims are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Naunet · 19/03/2026 08:20

Its a better life than they had, or they wouldn't be coming here, would they? How much more do you think British tax payers should be doing for them? Paying them £50 a week? £100? And that's on top of the dental bills (funny how I've not been able to get an NHS dentist for years, nor has anyone in my family), health care, food, housing, legal costs, phone bills. We really are a bunch of bastards arent we?

I was responding to the poster who seems to think asylum seekers are living a life of riley in the UK.

I'm pointing out that the £9.95 per week that asylum seekers get doesn't give anyone the life of Riley.

You've added all that crap about British taxpayers being a bunch of bastards who don't do enough all by yourself. Why do you see Brits see that way? That's awful.

What 'far left' are you referring to that 'should be listening'? There is no far left in the UK with any sort of political power. We have a moderate left leaning government who have recently introduced some policies to curb immigration. Who is it that you believe has the influence and authority to be turning decent people racist?

nomas · 19/03/2026 09:57

You cant campaign against immigration without being called a far right racist whether you are either far right or racist or not.
When everyone who questions or campaigns against illegal immigration is smeared with the same brush it drives people towards racism and the far right as they can see ordinary non racists like themselves smeared as far right racists so they start to listen to the people who are rightly called far right and/or racist assuming that they are also being wrongly smeared. All to soon being called far right and/or racist become meaningless in the same way that transphobia has become a meaningless word as everything is transphobic

Shabana Mahmood seems to manage fine without being called a racist.

No one wants uncontrolled immigration.

But also people aren't going to allow racists to attack immigrants with impunity.

I bet they have to pay for their own interpreters though don't they !!

I've no idea. I'm French so I speak the language.
I speak the language here too.

The point is that nobody should be living in a country where they don't bother learning the language and become a drain on the system whilst staying in their self imposed groups.
Why would you want to live in a country where you make no effort to integrate and therefore contribute nothing?

No, I'm not buying that. There's a massive difference between an objective concern about the number of immigrants coming into the country, the difficulties in supporting them and how viable that is, and the sort of comments we've seen on this thread alone. People have not been discussing immigrants, they've been discussing Muslims in general, applying negative stereotypes and fear mongering hyperbole.
To suggest the people calling out this as the Islamophobia it is are responsible for creating far right racists is as ridiculous as suggesting women calling out male VAWG are responsible for a rise in misogyny, and simply a way to silence anti racists. Just as the accusations of transphobia and misandry are used to silence feminists.

I experienced racism growing up as a Chinese kid in an area where myself and 4 others were the only kids out of a thousand at our school who were not white.

It’s pretty obvious to me that anti Muslim rhetoric rose after 9/11 and then after 7/7.

There is also the oppression of women being expected to dress a certain way.

When my Dad arrived as an immigrant he wasn’t an asylum seeker and had papers that clearly showed who he was. He also arrived with plenty of money to open a restaurant, no hand outs received.

It’s all about economics for me and really that’s at the root of many concerns about immigration. I do not like the rise in asylum seekers. Guilt tripped white Liberals are always the most pro asylum seekers supporters. My MIL is like this, she lives in an incredibly rich part of Surrey and is never going to have to worry about an HMO being next to her. White guilt will destroy the West because as a knee jerk response it has fuelled the rise of the Right, not Conservatism the actual extreme right.

Totally agree with this. The immigrants of the 60's/70's have in general done really well (it was the poor white working class we felt sorry for) - how is that remotely possible in a "racist" country?

Muslim isn’t a race, it’s a religion, first of all. Second pointing out that certain groups are having a negative impact as a whole does not mean that every member of that group is horrible. I’m sure your partner is lovely but that doesn’t mean we should ignore the problems caused by the group on the whole.

It’s because immigration is out of control that racism seems to have become more prevalent. How many young men are we going to keep letting into this country for them to just sell drugs, sign on and then assault young girls ? I have no issue with immigrants who come here and work, who put into the country, who make an effort to speak the language. My issue is with these men that come here to abuse the system and then break the law.

No, I think immigration is an excuse. How many illegal immigrants are actually young men on benefits who sell drugs and assault young women? And even if it was the reality, how does that explain the anti Muslim sentiment we are seeing directed at Muslims in general?
On this thread alone we've had people moaning about Muslim children having a day less education because they celebrate Eid. Tall stories objecting to women swimming in burkas and toddlers in hijab, which funnily enough only anti Muslims ever seem to see. We've had calls to ban Muslim women from covering their hair, to prevent Muslims congregating peacefully in public. Communities call 'ghettos'. People falsely accused of not speaking English and stats disproving that ignored. Positive accounts of Muslim communities ignored. People claiming that there's a conspiracy with the government to ban people from religious freedom and force convert us all to Islam.
None of this is due to a genuine concern about immigration. Its Islamophobia that these individuals have kept under wraps until the immigration issue emboldened them to reveal themselves.
