Racism in uk

Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

In these posts there is a high level of investment in Muslims being worse off even when the stats don’t bear this out. In fact, the stats are used as evidence that Jewish people are massive complainers rather than real victims of racism. Horrible!

The sad fact that is that the normalisation of anti-Muslim rhetoric means that many Muslims do
not report hate crime because they do not trust the authorities to act on it.

Just as many Muslims don’t post on MN because of the frequent pile ons against Islam and Muslims.

I would welcome a body like the CST to help Muslims report crime.

Asians constitute the highest proportion of racially aggravated offences (33%). Calling people ‘p’ has become normal for many.

"You should be able to speak the language of the country you've decided you want to live in."

Yes, but you don't necessarily have to be fluent when you first arrive.

I think people should be checked for fluency within a year and if they’re not their visas should be withdrawn. We should also ban the burqua and the hijab. I saw a preschool child with a hijab on yesterday and it was such a grim sight.

These moves would do lots to encourage proper integration here. I think the UK is far less racist that when I grew up in the 1980s. Just thinking of the words used to describe immigrants then is horrifying.

Well done for derailing the thread within a handful of posts.

Research shows Muslims tend to be very unlikely to report racism and Islamophobic whereas the CST actively encourages Jewish people to report every incident.

I think because of the likes of Farage and Trump racists feel they can spew their hatred freely and have found other empty headed idiots who agree with them, it’s always been there though, it never went away.

nomas · 18/03/2026 14:17

Wellthisisdifficult · 18/03/2026 13:18

The thread is about racism generally? No?

Yet you’re on another thread about anti-Semitism accusing anyone talking about Islamophobia of derailing that thread.

PurpleThistle7 · 18/03/2026 14:13

Yes, of course there's a massive issue with racism and bigotry and hatefulness. It was always thus.

I can't find an updated figure but the below link from the Met Police reports a 1350% increase in antisemitic hate crimes in 2023, and incidents are still ongoing

In my own family, security is extremely heightened in schools and they have received multiple bomb threats as well as having to hire a private bus service to keep students safe after harassment - although adults managed to break into the bus and scream at the children anyway. Students are now not allowed to wear uniforms outside school. A family member was standing guard outside synagogue on the same day at the Manchester attack. There have also been multiple instances of harassment and violence in Jewish neighbourhoods, including beating a woman unconscious, throwing red paint on a Jewish nursery school, attacking school girls with broken bottles, buses refusing to stop for Jewish school children, and setting a family home on fire.

I think you are right but per capita Jews are the most likely to experience racism. We have definitely been ignoring that as a society, it’s extremely sad and an indictment of where the Uk is today.

I think the problem is that people have been watching things like the pro pal marches, people appearing to support hamas, grooming gangs, some poor soul seems to be raped every few days it its often an afghan or small boats asylum seeker. I can imagine for many muslims it’s extremely painful to be associated with any extremist or criminal elements but I’m not sure what you do about that. People read and watch the news. I think people know that it would be ridiculous to stigmatise every single muslim.

Also social media is a cesspit, ignore it and be out in the world instead.

Is there a better country to go to?

nomas · 18/03/2026 14:09

Bringemout · 18/03/2026 11:48

Did you ever read that article, he was pointing out that in a free society he’s free to think burqas make women look like postboxes and they are free to wear whatever they like. It was a point about freedom of speech and freedom of expression?

So it’s fine to be racist to Muslims but not Jews?

Make it make sense.

If you have language barriers in this country and are unable to speak English, I suppose it's predictable you would experience disadvantage in education and employment.

Edited

And this is part of the problem isnt it?
There should be no language barrier.
You should be able to speak the language of the country you've decided you want to live in.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/03/2026 13:55

" surely it would refer to Islamophobia (which isn’t actually racism as Muslims are not a race or ethnic group. So it’s distinct)"

Discrimination against Muslims comes under racism, regardless of whether the Muslim is of a particular 'race'.

showmethegin · 18/03/2026 13:54

Yes I absolutely think racism is getting worse however I say that from the privileged position of being white. Racism on social media, in particular local area Facebook groups is abhorrent and rife. I first noticed the rise following all the Brexit stuff. Other white people would make racist comments in my presence, emboldened by rhetoric from politicians and in the media I assume. It’s like they saw a white face and just assumed I would agree with them when it seemed to be less overt before.

Don't try to be sensible on Mumsnet 😂

There seems to be a right wing push to frame Islamophobia as a justifiable response to anti semiticism. I wonder how far those buying into this think the right wing racists will support Jews once they're done with Muslims.
Scary times for anyone who is part of a minority faith or ethnicity.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 18/03/2026 13:48

@Busybeemummbut are those British expats in Spain living off the Spanish taxpayer? Unlikely

PropertyD · 18/03/2026 13:46

Pineneedlesincarpet · 18/03/2026 13:10

Agreed. Context was lost unfortunately.

100% agree. I have been many times to the Middle East where women are largely covered up. In 40 degree heat dressed in a burka which is heavy to walk around in. Never mind - the men think its marvelous!

Personally I dont like the burka. If its that women's free choice then maybe although I still dont think in the UK it should be allowed (lots of other countries ban it). It doesnt do anything for women and women's rights.

Busybeemumm · 18/03/2026 13:46

Wellthisisdifficult · 18/03/2026 13:41

And I totally disagree with that. If you go and live in another country you should have to learn the language to a reasonable level - even when I holiday somewhere I’ll try and learn the very basics before I go.

I agree that people wherever they live should be able to integrate and learn the local language. Here in the UK that is English. I was however refering to reasons why the statistics for Muslim hate crime might seem lower (than for Jews) is due to less reporting which may be attributed to language barriers.

My view is that all people should learn English if they live in the UK and this would help with integration and getting the right support (as well as reporting hate crime).

I would say the Jewish people have suffered the greatest ongoing persecution for their ethnicity over the last 2,500 years. How do you feel about antisemitism? Why don’t you want to discuss that?

hazelnutvanillalatte · 18/03/2026 13:43

Busybeemumm · 18/03/2026 11:46

Where is your evidence for this? We had an MP who compared Muslim women wearing the burka as 'letter boxes' and still went on to be PM. Imagine if something like that was said about Jewish women who wear wigs?!

I think the difference now is that we have the spectre of racists gaining more significant political power. We never had that to the same extent before. The thought that we could end up like the states with people getting randomly chucked into the back of vans is frightening.
