Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

Muslim is not a race

Neither is Jewish! I actually think we people stop confusing chosen religion with actual race conversations might actually make more sense!

Is it racism or just absolute frustration at the lack of integration from some communities?

Frustration ... but its called racism to keep people quiet.

There's no human rights issue with banning a niqab.

There is absolutely a security risk when people are allowed to go around concealing their identity.

If it's about security, you'd also need to ban motorbike helmets, face masks for ill people, scarves pulled up over the mouth, big sunglasses, etc.
It's not really about security, is it?

It really wasn't. It's appalling these days and the likes of Trump, Farage "normalising" racism is what has led to people being overtly racist online and in person.

If you experience it and witness it I hope you also call it out.

It was much worse when I was at school (1960s and 70s). It was normal back then to hear derogatory terms even for eg. French and Italians, never mind that everyone with brown skin tone was referred to as a p**i. That was in London, where I grew up. I think that today, most people are more tolerant of others and less likely to be offensive, apart from a small but vocal minority.

An immigrant shouldn't rely on the state to provide lessons though. Whether that's British people abroad or immigrants in the UK.

English is a complicated language. I’ve seen the difference classes make. Of course immersion helps too.

But it’s human nature to communicate in the language that you know best. See expats in Spain.

Paganpentacle · 18/03/2026 14:49

"I think people should be checked for fluency within a year and if they’re not their visas should be withdrawn."

A year? Can you learn a language to fluency in a year?

As for banning the nikab, there are clear human rights issues with such a ban and they don't work anyway. I live in a place where they are banned and I still see them from some time. It's also likely that some of the women who wear them just retreat from the public space.

Denmark have introduced a policy of bulldozing areas of housing that have a high concentration of non-western immigrants to force such immigrants to properly integrate. It’s an interesting policy.

English classes were defunded. There are long waiting lists in many places. The will is there to
learn.

100%! How can you hope to integrate if you cannot talk the language? People shouldn’t be allowed to move anywhere and just live in their own little ghetto. It does community cohesion no good whatsoever.

I've a Spanish friend and she tells me her parents' area has been completely overrun by Brits who refuse to integrate or learn the language. It's despicable.

I think people should be checked for fluency within a year and if they’re not their visas should be withdrawn. We should also ban the burqua and the hijab. I saw a preschool child with a hijab on yesterday and it was such a grim sight.

These moves would do lots to encourage proper integration here. I think the UK is far less racist that when I grew up in the 1980s. Just thinking of the words used to describe immigrants then is horrifying.

This also needs to be implemented for Brits living abroad.

These stats are based on people actually reporting them in the first place and so therefore not completely reliable.

People of Muslim faith are also more likely to experience social disadvantage in education and employment therefore may also be less likely to report racism due to language barriers and not knowing who/how to report.

Thank you. I agree with this.

I’ve experienced a lot of racism. 70s/80s was horrific. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to report. Not now tbh either.

Day to day I don’t tend to experience it much. Sometimes micro aggressions. The flags I guess. But not directly.

im not on social media though.

Gettingbysomehow · 18/03/2026 14:42

My stepfather and half siblings are Indian, they get rascist treatment all the time in the south east. It was "muslim scum" last week and he's not even muslim he's hindu.
He's been a british citizen since 1960, has worked full time and paid all of his taxes. We get pretty sick of it as family. My mum gets the "black man's whore" treatment, she's nearly 90 ff's.
It's really overt rascism these days.

Some immigrants are doing the jobs that Brits are too lazy to do.

Indeed. Let’s get the lazy Brits off their arses first please.

SatsumaDog · 18/03/2026 14:38

I think racism has always been very prevalent in the UK. It may have appeared to reduce since the 90’s, but I just think it been hidden. Issues with uncontrolled migration has allowed voicing racist opinions to become more acceptable. People now have a so called excuse and that’s partly the reason I think it’s appearing to worsen.

Was the headscarf also regressive and misogynistic when the Queen wore it?

Will you ban nuns from wearing it?

The queen wore a headscarf as a means of keeping her hair in place. The queens decision to wear a headscarf didn’t come for the fear of men leering at her hair.

If you are not capable of learning a new language in a year while living in a country full time how are you capable of working?

Depends where you work and some people work in the home.

The only grim here is your attitude.
