Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

Don’t be so Rediculous, the late Queen occasionally wore a scarf tied under her chin when taking the dogs out, she wasn’t compelled to wear it as religious dress for the obligatory covering of her hair. Very few nuns still wear a head covering, but if they do they are usually part of a religious order. It’s not as if all catholic women are obliged to wear one. The youngest child I ever saw was a toddler in the baby seat of a supermarket trolley. She couldn’t have been more than two years old. She had a full headscarf covering her head. I just thought I’d was terribly sad.

Your right us Catholics don't have to wear a head covering. Sometimes people wear them at mass but it's are few and far between. It is also a choice for Muslims to wear scarfs. My daughters friend doesn't. She has to cover up in summer though, like wearing jeans and long t shirts but she isn't obliged to wear any coverings and no Muslim is they chose to. Or should I say the parents chose to dress thier child in them.

Thank you, I do indeed have some lovely friends - I’m blessed in that respect. I’m not sure I have any “heroes” I think what you’re doing is creating a version of me you want to exist for your benefit (and just for completeness here is a CV list of parties I have voted for in the past - Labour (was actually a fully paid up member at one point). Lib Dem’s, Tories, Green and locally Independent. I generally listen to what any of them have to offer

You're lovely Pakistani-hating Indian friends shouldn't get too uncomfortable under Farage. Judging by the racist comments to Indians from Reform supporters, they are going to have a hard time of it if Reform come into power.

Of course they are, it's just the double standard at play here. If someone brings up Islamophobia in the first few posts on a thread about anti-Semitism, people accuse them of derailing.

But it was never about islamaphobia- it was a post on racism generally the posters husband was used as an example. But the post talks about Racism being bad in the UK. If you want to discuss something narrower it needs to be a separate thread.

Really? That’s not something I’ve noticed. Most people in Britain think all racism is equally abhorrent. I’m sad for OP that her experiences have been otherwise.

In what way do you feel that having neighbours that are not white British has made your area worse? This doesn't resonate with me at all. Our local mosque is an asset to the community, arranges all sorts from baby classes to wellbeing sessions, litter picks and a curry van with free meals for people who are struggling for food. The local businesses have elevated the area, planting flowers outside restaurants and shops, and I genuinely don't see any problems. What is happening in your area that you'd like people to see and listen to your concerns about?

I find it completely mind boggling that people care about the skin colour/race/religion etc of THEIR NEIGHBOURS

No, she literally says he is down about the racism.

Also she says 'I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him'

Sigh! I give in!

Paganpentacle · 18/03/2026 15:27

So why are they off school then?

I have no idea, I don't set term dates! My point was it's a ridiculous comparison (why do all kids get Christmas off but only Muslim ones get Eid off) given Eid is not a nationally recognised holiday.

nomas · 18/03/2026 16:33

PersephonePomegranate · 18/03/2026 16:32

She doesn't say anything about anti-Islamic comments to her partner, she talks about racist comments on SM.

She’s saying racism is bad. Antisemitism is another form of racism. Neither poster was saying either form is better or worse or more or less valid than any other. Both are horrendous. Agreed?

Thank you.

Some people seem intent on bending the definition of racism to suit their own agenda.

it's really not helpful when an OP starts a thread about racism against her Muslim partner and within the first few posts the thread is hijacked by bad faith actors saying 'per capita Jews are the most likely to experience racism. We have definitely been ignoring that as a society, it’s extremely sad and an indictment of where the Uk is today.'

But my school used to close for both Epiphany and the feast of the Immaculate Conception. My son's classmates who are making their first penance this week have the day off for religious observation. They'll have the same for their first Holy Communion next year and Confirmation in P7. The kids who aren't doing the sacraments don't stay off. How is that any different?

Well Pressumably that’s a Catholic school. I went to a catholic school, interesting days to pick to have off for them. Why those days? Surprised their first penance wasn’t on a Saturday- most are

The point is this poster doesn't want Muslim women to be allowed to wear a headscarf, but thinks Christian women (including the late Queen), Sikh women, Jewish women should all be allowed.

She is concerned about racism because of her Muslim partner. She doesn't need to be dismissed and told Jewish people have it way worse. That doesn't help anyone.

Was the headscarf also regressive and misogynistic when the Queen wore it?

Will you ban nuns from wearing it?

@Firstbornunicorn "But sometimes it's driven by the fact that they can speak English, so it makes sense to go to a country where they speak the language. Or sometimes there are relatives here who came over during Windrush."

I can tell you don't live in an area with large amounts of asylum seekers. Firstly, a very high proportion of them don't speak English at all and don't come from ex British countries. Secondly, are you seriously saying that any of them have connections to the Windrush generation? That's absolutely bonkers. A tiny (virtually non existent percentage) are from the Caribbean. The majority come from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea and Iran.
