Whatever anyone thinks of handguns, 5 year olds died due to gun shot injuries and some respect should be shown by all MPs whatever side they represent

as he sat during the talk smirking

I don't know if you are trying to be genuinely helpful, by educating me on the subtle nuances of the English language, or you truly don't understand what is meant by an "ad hominem" attack.

Here's the definition - HTH

"Ad hominem, short for argumentum ad hominem, refers to several types of arguments where the speaker attacks the character, motive, or some other attribute of the person making an argument rather than the substance of the argument itself. This avoids genuine debate by creating a diversion often using a totally irrelevant, but often highly charged attribute of the opponent's character or background.... "

Oh I was trying to to be genuinely helpful 😊

@TeaView "We didn’t wallow in nonsense by saying that guns don’t kill, people do.🙄 etc."

It's not nonsense, it's quite correct.

The massacre occurred because some people didn't do the vetting job properly.

In 1991 (five years before the tragic event) complaints against Hamilton (the shooter) were made to the Central Scotland Police and were investigated by the Child Protection Unit. He was reported to the Procurator Fiscal for consideration of ten charges, including assault, obstructing police and contravention of the Children and Young Persons Act 1937.
Reports from serving police officers stated that he was unsuitable to own firearms; no action was taken.

Well we haven’t had a similar incident since. So I take that as a win. How is your life worse since this ban?

ValueofNothing · 14/03/2026 14:26

@Biggermommabear That wasn't RBF, though, that was a definite smirk from Farage.

If Rachel Reeves has done it too, feel free start a separate thread about it? It's pretty obvious you're trying to deflect from the fact that he smirked when a victim of the Dunblane massacre was mentioned, and that he thinks the handgun ban brought in after Dunblane was ludricrous.

He is so influenced by American politics that he's struggling to remember what the British public believes in. Despite what he says, we're fine with the handgun ban. We don't want to be dragged into yet another war in the Middle East by the US. We don't want privatised healthcare. We don't want changes to our abortion law in favour of making it harder for woman to have abortions. He is so out of touch with the British public. That's what's ludicrous.

Yes, and it further exposes his real agenda for taking us out of the EU. 'Sovereignty' my a**.

Valeyard15 · 14/03/2026 14:39

He's right that the ban on hand guns was a knee jerk reaction and excessive

No, he isn't and no, it wasn't.

It was not a knee pjerk reaction. It was a wakeup call.

sittingonabeach · 14/03/2026 16:52

@Biggermommabear have you told the Dunblane parents that campaigned for gun restrictions that it was a knee jerk reaction and they shouldn’t have campaigned for it?

The fact there are still shootings suggests our gun laws are still too lax.

TeaView · 14/03/2026 16:39

Kdobelda · 14/03/2026 16:23

I don't understand anyone on this thread saying the ban on handguns was excessive?
It was a fantastic move and has done much to keep this country safer from gun crime.

I feel proud of the people who campaigned for it and the fact our government accepted it. An awful disaster happened, and we took decisive action. We didn’t wallow in nonsense by saying that guns don’t kill, people do.🙄 etc.

TigTails · 14/03/2026 16:32

He’s smirking safe in the knowledge he’s unlikely to ever be Charlie Kirked.

LemonFancy · 14/03/2026 16:10

I’m not sure if you’re being deliberately obtuse or if you just have comprehension difficulties, but of course ‘a year 5 child could understand that’ is an entirely different sentence with an entirely different meaning to ‘my year 5 child understands that’.

Gcol · 14/03/2026 16:30

Since Dunblane, no school has had a shooting incident.

Yet in that time 700 plus USA school shootings. Not all had people killed or died later from injuries.

PorkyHooton · 14/03/2026 16:29

Vote for Nigel if you want school shootings like they have in the US over here. The gun companies would love to sell more here and will line Nigel's pocket to be able to

Sartre · 14/03/2026 16:26

Well, I don’t know why anyone is surprised after the stream of claims he was a racist, antisemitic bully at school. He’s truly grim but for some reason Hannah Spencer’s accent and colourful clothes are worse.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 14/03/2026 16:25

There are sound reasons to own "pointy knives" though. I have a fine collection in the knife block in my kitchen, all regularly used for perfectly legal purposes.
There's already a ban on carrying them in public unless you have a legitimate reason though, eg a chef going from one place of work to another.

Handguns have very few legitimate uses in the UK if you're an ordinary civilian. Off the top of my head, I can only think of vets and people who compete in pistol shooting as a sport. Farmers might also have grounds to keep a handgun, I guess.

Honestly, bar opening packets of bacon, i dont really use the pointy bit

Even for a paring knife, there could be amendments made to make them not suitable for stabbing with

We have an epidemic in the UK- something needs to be done. This wouldn't be radically expensive, and is an easy fix to keep our kids safe

Hi folks, this thread is being reported a fair bit and so we think it's worth saying that we’re happy for people to disagree – it would be a very quiet site if everyone nodded politely at each other all day. But the thread is starting to slide from arguing the point into arguing about each other. If you want it to stay up, you’ll need to rein that in a bit. By all means challenge the argument as robustly as you like, just leave the personal remarks out of it. Thanks.

I think his appeal is greatest with ppl who want to tear down everything and start again,..... driven by their seemingly nihilistic hatred of anything that doesnt conform to a narrow, skewed idea of what it means to be British. I think a kind of chaos would be created were NF to get into No.10 ..... served up as ' progress', by an increasingly '1984' style PR machine....and a series of half- baked, ill thought through policies would be rushed out into the void created by the chaos. Eurgh !!!!

He's not smirking. He can't help what his face does.

Many females have a RBF and can't help it.

*"Resting bitch face"

How about this one?

https://www.msn.com/en-ph/news/other/angela-rayner-seen-smirking-as-rachel-reeves-is-seen-crying/vi-AA1HQNcU

and this

How many children were killed there ?

I had to take an intercity train the day after the shooting. People were openly crying as they saw the papers.

Biggermommabear · 14/03/2026 15:22

Everyone is entitled to an opinion on any politician and any post.

You opened this can of worms by saying that your yr 5 child understood about gun and knife culture and the (not so subtle) differences between people getting stabbed or shot.
I wonder how he got that knowledge aged 9/11?

I’m not sure if you’re being deliberately obtuse or if you just have comprehension difficulties, but of course ‘a year 5 child could understand that’ is an entirely different sentence with an entirely different meaning to ‘my year 5 child understands that’.

I’m not sure if you’re being deliberately obtuse but saying far fewer people would die is clearly and obviously not the same as saying it’s better to be stabbed than shot. My Y5s could understand that 🤷‍♀️

Your powers of reading comprehension don't seem great, @Biggermommabear. The post I've quoted is the post you seemed to think @ilovesooty had posted. It is quite obviously from a teacher saying that children in year 5 in the English school system (so aged between 9 and 10) would be capable of grasping that saying fewer people are likely to die in a knife attack than a gun attack is not saying it's better to be stabbed than shot. Obviously nobody wants either form of attack to happen, but nobody wants any form of crime to happen. We put measures in place to try to prevent crime and minimise the harm done when crimes of violence do happen anyway. Banning handguns was a sensible and proportionate measure which as far as I'm aware has indeed meant that gun crime in the UK has remained very low ever since.

"ok to beat your wife, as long as you didn't use a stick that was thicker than your thumb."

A similar verse occurs in the Koran v 4:36

Care to comment on that?

I only know it from an 18th century Gilray cartoon, that supposedly lampoons an English judge who made such a ruling.

Maybe the judge had studied the Koran at some point.

Agree with this
my DH has a shotgun license (rural worker)
the police check in regularly
he has to show them a secure gun cupboard with ammunition stored elsewhere.
Despite strict licensing and MH checks, he knows of farmers who have sadly taken their own life with their own guns. They are a rural necessity but agree that controls can’t be strict enough. I think it’s testament to good gun control that Dunblane hasn’t had a repeat in this country

I used to know someone who went game shooting. He had to keep his shotgun in a locked gun cabinet securely bolted to the wall, inside a built in cupboard that had to be locked with a padlock and hasp.

He was fine with it, apart from the fact that it was infuriating to have to unlock and relock the built-in cupboard every time he wanted to get the ironing board or the hoover out! For the first few years he had his gun, the police used to call round occasionally, to check that he was storing them in accordance with his licence.

The police here are very strict about revoking licences, too. I've known of cases where people have had their licences taken away because they've been caught drinking and driving, and the revocation has been upheld on appeal. The police position is that if someone is reckless and irresponsible enough to drink and drive, they're too reckless to be trusted with a firearm.

There are probably Reform members who regard laws against DV as "woke" and think we should go back to the days when it was ok to beat your wife, as long as you didn't use a stick that was thicker than your thumb.
