Whatever anyone thinks of handguns, 5 year olds died due to gun shot injuries and some respect should be shown by all MPs whatever side they represent

as he sat during the talk smirking

This is not correct.

The Dunblame massacre happened in 1996.

Restrictions tightened in 1997 through two major speedy pieces of legislation that targeted short firearms. The first law introduced a prohibition based on the physical size of the weapon, specifically covering firearms with a barrel shorter than 30 centimeters or an overall length under 60 centimeters.
While there was initially an exception for small-caliber pistols, a second law passed later that year removed that exception.
This effectively placed most handguns into the prohibited category, requiring government permission that is rarely granted.

That legislation went through parliament at a rate of knots.

I don't know what "2 year campaign" you are talking about.

This was the impression I got from what was said in the film. Maybe there's a difference between the law being implemented in England and in Scotland? They said some handguns were banned straight away, but others weren't, and they talked to various women who had campaigned for two years for a full ban. But if I got the wrong end of the stick, I apologise.

What for?

For anything! I don’t know what you’d use it for. It was a simple question… would you like to own a gun?

Biggermommabear · 15/03/2026 10:32

So now you are a mindreader?

Please can I borrow your crystal ball, my husband would like some tips for the Cheltenham Festival ? 🙂

They aren't mind readers but managed to understand what my post meant through normal logic and not twisting the words, no-one else has accused me of being pro-stabbing apart from you. Does that not suggest that maybe it wasn't actually ambiguous.
You incorrectly quoted me here That’s very different to the “if only these people had knives…” by selecting a small amount of what I said and moving the word 'only', you have tried to make it sound like I wanted them to stab people.
What sort of logic are you using to be able to suggest I am pro-stabbing when I have clearly said that if they didn't have access to guns so easily then far less people would have been killed, at what point does that mean I am happy for people to be stabbed?
Absolutely bizarre

Biggermommabear · 15/03/2026 11:12

@hobbledyhoy Imagine being an apologist and defender of an odious man, who's supposed to be leading our great country, who gives a job involving national security to a paedophile's pal and nonce's bestie.😨

Yuch, triple yuch.

hobbledyhoy · 15/03/2026 11:06

Imagine being an apologist and defender of an odious man who smirks at the mention of children being shot.

We all have political leanings but there comes a point where you should draw a line. In my opinion, innocent children being killed is one of them.

But there are some people that lap up the crap they are being fed from across the pond which is against their own interests without realising that it’s lining the pockets of already very rich and powerful men. You’re doing your job for them, but then you know that don’t you.

No, it wasn’t ambiguous at all. You were the only poster to supposedly misunderstand it. You were clearly twisting it with intent to goad.

I disagree, the post was ambiguous.

In addition if all you can post consists of "Ad hominum" attacks, it doesn't say much about the validity of your arguments.

Talking about comprehension, did you not understand Mumsnet HQ's post on Sat at 16.21 ?
Or maybe you thought, for some reason, it didn't apply to you?

Yes 6th is very good.

GB got Gold medals in 1984 in LA and 1988 in Seol. That was rifle-shooting. We have done well with shooting clays, getting gold in 1968.

The USA do better with handguns.

Ah that’s great, I’m really glad to hear that our gun laws haven’t adversely affected shooting as a sport.

Biggermommabear · 15/03/2026 10:27

IdentityCris · 15/03/2026 10:21

Excellent. So there's no connection, and the Olympics and sports argument is irrelevant. That's got that one out of the way.

It wasn't an argument.
I pointed out facts but I left others to interpret them.
Anyway, glad your happy now. 🙂

IdentityCris · 15/03/2026 10:21

Biggermommabear · 15/03/2026 10:18

I never said that, and please don't put words in my mouth.

IdentityCris · 15/03/2026 10:20

It takes a major stretching of the basic meaning of words in the English language to claim that the statement "How many mass shootings do they have in America, if these people only had access to knives, far less people would die" should be interpreted as a wish for people to have access to knives to kill with. It is obvious that it means nothing of the sort.

Biggermommabear · 15/03/2026 10:18

IdentityCris · 15/03/2026 10:17

Should we have risked several more lives every year to help us win a few more shooting medals in the Olympics?

I never said that, and please don't put words in my mouth.

IdentityCris · 15/03/2026 10:17

Biggermommabear · 15/03/2026 09:57

I can't answer your question because I am no longer involved with the sport.

Neither do I have a crystal ball to tell me what might have happened if the laws had stayed the same.

I have the same access that you do to the Olympic Medal Tables, so you can form your own opinion from them, as I did.

Abhannmor · 15/03/2026 10:17

Farage might be thinking about his massive pension from his decades of idleness in Brussels. Got to be worth a little private chuckle eh?

IdentityCris · 15/03/2026 10:12

But then, there are people who enjoy hunting wild animals with dogs as a hobby. Or watching bullfighting, and dogfighting. Time was when some people enjoyed watching public hangings. Fortunately the criterion for what is morally justifiable is not what people might enjoy.

I'm not arguing with you.

IdentityCris · 15/03/2026 10:12

Biggermommabear · 15/03/2026 07:16

It matters to those sensible, responsible people who enjoy pistol (target) shooting as a hobby.
It is an Olympic Sport, where GB came 6th in 2024.

With respect, I wasn’t asking about how and why the Dunblane shooting happened.

I’m specifically interested in whether the changes to gun control implemented after Dunblane have negatively affected any gun sport enthusiasts.

There was nothing wrong with the gun laws before Dunblane.

It was the application of them that was wrong - in that instance.

Despite police officers raising concerns, it was astonishing that Hamilton (the shooter) was repeatedly able to secure licences for his growing collection of guns, which he apparently “talked” to as if they were his “babies”.

How have the gun law changes after Dunblane negatively impacted those who enjoy pistol shooting as a hobby or in competitive sports? It sounds like the tighter controls might be an inconvenience but haven’t prevented people continuing to enjoy these sports.

The USA do better with handguns.

In the US there are more than 7,000 murders each year involving handguns.

In the UK, the average number of handgun murders is around 28 per year.

Even if you scale the UK’s population up to match the US then the comparable figure would be about 110 vs 7,000.

It feels like a trade-off worth a few places in the Olympic medal table tbh.

6th in 2024 is pretty good, right? So the post Dunblane law change doesn’t seem to have affected our participation in the sport too much? Unless we were regularly in medal positions pre Dunblane I guess.

OK, never mind. It's just with momma in your username and your American misspellings of calibre and centimetres made me wonder.
