To be upset over ruined photo shoot?

Gutted about this.

I spent admittedly far too much on a Mother’s Day photo shoot. Had it today and was awful. Kids not playing ball at all; ds wild and charging around like a complete lunatic, dd whiny and refusing to do anything she was asked.

I know it’s just kids etc but I can’t lie; I’m gutted.

With technology the photographer will make you some nice pictures thats their job try not to worry

LamentableShoes · 14/03/2026 13:23

YANBU OP
Someone gave me a voucher for a really good family photoshoot and I was so happy to finally have some decent pictures of us all together. They took loads of us "in action " and made up a simple ball game to get the kids playing naturally.

Well DC1 decided to get in a huge strop about who wasn't playing properly and kept stomping off with me saying through gritted teeth to just join in as it was our only chance. He was definitely old enough too, not a toddler - just decided to throw a tantrum and had a face like thunder.

We did get some lovely photos in the end as the photographer was really good and took loads. But I feel your pain! Hope you get some decent ones.

And no I don't post pictures on social media or anything like that - just wanted a nice one of me and DH for our bookcase and a couple of nice family ones for the wall. Usually it's DH or I taking any normal photos so we're not in them.

Megifer · 14/03/2026 13:23

Ahhh op that sounds so shit for you. Completely understand why youre upset, id be gutted too .

Springiscoming368 · 14/03/2026 13:23

Oh OP you are getting a rough ride here! I’m so sorry you didn’t get the photos you wanted.

Sounds like a mini session outside which tends to be better for the kids and it still didn’t go well.

Your feelings are valid esp when you have spent money on it and just wanted a few nice photos. Sounds like you need to put on a sad movie and maybe have a cry to release some emotions!

im hoping the photographer might pull through and you could have a a few good one.

category12 · 14/03/2026 13:23

Aww sorry OP.

If they are all rubbish, surely the photographer should give it another go or refund you? It's their job to get the shots.

Charming!

I think only pictures I've got with me and the kids were taken when my parents lived nearby - and there aren't that many.

I would wait and see what the photos look like in the end - they may well have got one or two good shots anyway.

I get it op. Ignore the obtuse comments. I’m hardly in any photos either because I’m always the one taking them and dh rarely does. I’ve joked/not really a joke though before that when I’m gone the kids won’t have any pictures of me.

That’s what I’m genuinely worried about. Virtually none of me and the kids and the ones that there are are posed as I have to ask and look so forced.

I lost my own mum young and I just feel like when I’m gone they’ll have nothing.

Honestly there is no way there were any decent ones. To be fair if wasn’t just the kids but the weather was very windy so had hair in eyes, etc.

We had a photo shoot and it was awful I thought… but actually there were quite a few lovely pictures and now I look back at that day with a smile. My kids were 7 and 4 at the time.

Enko · 14/03/2026 13:18

YANBU. You wished for a good session and that didnt happen and its ok to be disappointed.

Have you seen the photos yet? As years ago we did a session and ds was horrendous however you cant alsee it on the actual photos.

iamjustgutted · 14/03/2026 13:16

I think that poster just wanted to rub some salt in an already very open wound.

Why not ? Does nobody ever take ad hoc photos of you with your children ?

Edited

I think this is a bit rude. If the op is a single parent/no other family it is well within the realms of probability that she is the one taking the photos so organised a shoot so she’s got some photos of her with her DC.

I know you feel disappointed but the photos might be lovely and you might look back at them and laugh about it. There's a picture of my wedding I absolutely love. Dh and I standing in a beachy strand, its a glorious july afternoon, looked like we were in Spain. However photographer wanted us to do this contrived lovey dovey look at each other while dh is holding me in that fake sweep you up in your arms thing, not our style at all. I end up nearly falling backwards, dh catches me awkwardky and we are just laughing so much. The photo itself - well you know that ugly laugh face we all do when overcome. That's my face in that photo. But I love it because its just "us" not contrived, not controlled.

Point of my long story is.....you might get a few pics that you can laugh at and with young kids that's the point if it anyway. They are chaos...

My favourite wedding photo is one that someone took on a disposable camera (I got married before mobile phones had decent cameras) and it's just of the wedding party including me and DH emerging into the car park outside the register office, but there's something about, the lighting and atmosphere and people's faces, that really captured the mood of the day.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 14/03/2026 13:15

This reminds me of when I booked a cake smash for my eldest first birthday - he just sat there and then picked up the whole cake and threw it at the photographer

It was hideous and I didn’t bother with my other 2 kids!

iamjustgutted · 14/03/2026 13:13

It was an outdoor setting.

OP posts:
Restlessdreams1994 · 14/03/2026 13:12

I’d recommend finding a photographer who will come and take photos in an outdoor setting eg a playground, beach, woods with trees to climb about on or autumn leaves to kick about etc. Young kids never deal well with studio photos because it’s an unnatural and pressured environment that isn’t enjoyable for them. If you can’t afford a photographer then get a friend who’s good at taking nice photos to come with you instead.

Much better to do a photoshoot somewhere they can play and get really lovely natural photos of you all having fun together.

No.

Thanks; I wish I hadn’t posted now. I’m struggling to see the humour tbh, in fact I just feel like crying. I really, really just wanted some nice photos of me and my children, that doesn’t mean my life is staged.

Oh, ignore the people who are being grumpy about it. There's nothing wrong with having professional pictures taken. I think you'll come round to liking the pictures eventually. You can always go again next year and your children might be in a better mood.

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 14/03/2026 13:06

How old are your children?

That's a shame - there's an account on Facebook called Awkward Family Photos, that might make you feel better!!

gentlemum · 14/03/2026 13:02

I think all you can do with photoshoots with young children is embrace the chaos and aim for candid shots of playing and laughing together. You’re never going to get a posed photo with everyone smiling and looking. A good photographer who works with families should know this and get good in the moment shots
