Ordering the same takeout each time

Grumpynan · 13/03/2026 21:59

We very rarely have a takeaway and when we do it’s normally Chinese or occasionally pizza. Adult DD is a vegetarian and I have ibs so restricted what I can eat. But even so, I think when treating ourselves to a takeout each person should be able to have what they want.

we ordered Chinese tonight as DD has reached a goal in her mental health targets and felt she needed it acknowledging just a low key thing.

So she instantly said she wanted her normal - chow mien no bean sprouts, stir fried vegetables no sauce egg fried rice and spring rolls. I add my chicken balls in sweet and sour sauce, and we’re both happy we share this and she always has some left over noodles for supper !

now here’s the problem DH says that’s boring we always get the same, tonight he got special fried rice house special curry and lamb with spring onions and ginger. Fine that’s what he wants I really don’t see the problem.

but then when we’re eating I suggest he has some chicken (I would never eat them all) and he has some spring rolls, fine there’s plenty we’re all still happy. But the he starts, I should try what he ordered, I being boring, I point out I can’t eat his rice that’s why we get the egg fried, I can’t eat pork or prawns both of which are in his curry and I can’t eat onions so the lambs out. Would I like his meal - yes, can I eat it no/

he went on and on saying a ltltle wouldn’t hurt, but trust me - it will. And anyway, we’re happy with what we have, it’s what we like.

am I being unreasonable saying that whereas it’s nice to share a takeout, ultimately each person has their own wants and it’s really not an issure.

honestly it’s the same with pizza, a large mixed vegetables no onion extra pineapple DD and I are happy, he always ridicules it as boring whilst he tucks unto his large mixed meat spicy whatever it is he has then complains all night with indigestion.

it takes the joy out of the treat.

DD and I have learned to just let him get on with it, and we enjoy ourselves, but sometimes like tonight, I could just poke the chop stick somewhere!

sorry rant over

and just to say the chicken balls covered in sauce were amazing tonight.

YANBU at all! I just don’t understand your DH. When we get takeaway, I order what I want & DH orders what he wants & that’s it! No judgement, no sharing. DH often orders the same thing from the Chinese as he’s not a massive fan & that’s absolutely fine. Lately, I’ve been having the same thing each time from the Indian ( duck curry) as it’s delicious & I prefer it to anything else. All seems quite odd & maybe a little controlling?

YANBU, but you sound like an incredibly picky eater.

She's got food intolerances which changes the whole dynamic.

With food intolerances comes a need for human tolerance so her DH needs to put a sock in it.

DaisyChain505 · 14/03/2026 08:00

I order what I want and no I don’t share 🤣

bugalugs45 · 14/03/2026 07:58

Slightly off topic, but I’ve never come across a Chinese that serves lamb

You lost me at sharing a takeaway. I order what I want, and then I eat it. If I wanted what someone else had I would have ordered it.

Alright smithy 🤣

order what you know and love!

coolcahuna · 14/03/2026 07:33

I don't have any intolerances and order the exact same thing every time, he's being annoying and ignore him

Are you eyeing up my bhunas?

hazelnutvanillalatte · 14/03/2026 06:53

I would just factually call it out every time. 'You know I have IBS and can't eat that, why do you keep asking me?'

AuntieDeee · 14/03/2026 05:17

YANBU
We have our own choices due to my IBS and limited foods I can eat
I get pizza without sauce just dairy free cheese and mushrooms.
I used to love eating all differant foods but alas things change.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 14/03/2026 03:52

The time for experimenting is an all-you-can-eat buffet or someone letting you try some of there's, I'm not risking spending money on stuff I might not love.

Bristolandlazy · 14/03/2026 00:51

I assume a lot if not most people know what they like and regularly order the same thing. No food sharing in our house re with a take away. Order what you want.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 14/03/2026 00:36

I rarely get a takeaway but when I do I get the same food (from the curry house) because it's a treat and I know I'll enjoy it.

KitsyWitsy · 14/03/2026 00:24

I am not particularly adventurous either - I don't mind trying other food sometimes but I won't order something completely unknown for myself as I might not like it!

It's also absolutely awful to push unwanted food on people.

Caerulea · 14/03/2026 00:23

I'm a chef & I make slightly out of the ordinary food (at least for where I am) & I've got regular customers who order the exact same thing every week. They often laugh at themselves for not trying something else on the menu even though it appeals to them.

From my POV - you order takeaway as a treat & often a comfort at the end of the week. It's snuggly, warm-blanket food, it feels good & makes you happy. It's also bloody expensive! Why risk a dish you might not like (or upsets your stomach) as much as your usual thing?

I spend hours & hours prepping & cooking but still feel incredibly complimented when those regulars have the same, simpler, thing over & over cos it means those dishes really mean something to them in one way or another.

Your hubby is a being a wally

ananasfritz · 14/03/2026 00:10

If he doesn't understand that you can't taste his dishes because they contain things he knows you can't eat, then he has much, much bigger problems and limitations than how to split a takeaway. Stop wasting time second-guessing yourself, just say no when he asks you to try something you can't eat - what else COULD you do?

Imbusytodaysorry · 13/03/2026 23:56

@Grumpynan he likes trying new meals “which he does” If you and dd tried new meals he would get through the menu quicker wouldn’t he .? 😁

IHate · 13/03/2026 23:18

YANBU, but you sound like an incredibly picky eater.

Fairygoblin · 13/03/2026 23:01

TBH you started this issue! All seemed fine and dandy until you offered your food to DH which then started the discussion. He didn’t initiate it!

Firtreefiona · 13/03/2026 23:01

I eat meat but not meat pizzas. All of that hot grease smears everywhere. Yuck!

takealettermsjones · 13/03/2026 22:58

NotAnotherScarf · 13/03/2026 22:32

Wtf... anyone I'm close to knows I don't share food. No not ever..you eat your shit order, I'll eat the tasty stuff I've ordered. You do not take one of my chips, spring rolls what ever. You do not "pinch a chip", ask for a taste. No

If you're dumb enough to order stuff you don't like. Unlucky. I know what I like, I don't want to taste your shite...do one.

In other words...your DH is a cock

Ps I once went out for a meal with a colleague and a client...the colleague thought she couldn't order a dessert but have a bit of mine and asked for another spoon...I told her where I'd stick the spoon much to the clients shock...but hay that's my death my chocolate and you can stick your £35 million

😂😂😂

AgentPidge · 13/03/2026 22:44

We don't get takeaways very often but when we do I get the same thing every time and DH says it's boring. And then he wants some of it!
YANBU

ChinaPlates · 13/03/2026 22:39

Even if you didn’t have IBS you would not be unreasonable.

People should just order what they want to eat, which is what he did. He ordered two mains as far as I can tell so he’s not backwards
at coming forward when it comes to ordering what he wants.

Caitl995 · 13/03/2026 22:38

No point ordering something you might not like IMO and it’s none of his business even if it is boring. In my experience, when men start saying things like this it’s because they don’t like you very much, sorry. It would really wind me up to be honest and I would start making comments like “You’re ordering two meals are you? Bit greedy!” If he’s fat it will cut deep.

Pearlstillsinging · 13/03/2026 22:37

I'm another who can only eat a limited diet. I would be furious at a partner who kept wanting me to 'try' something I know that I can't eat. Having said that I wouldn't offer him any of my food either, especially knowing that it would prompt the annoying conversation.
