Ordering the same takeout each time

Grumpynan · 13/03/2026 21:59

We very rarely have a takeaway and when we do it’s normally Chinese or occasionally pizza. Adult DD is a vegetarian and I have ibs so restricted what I can eat. But even so, I think when treating ourselves to a takeout each person should be able to have what they want.

we ordered Chinese tonight as DD has reached a goal in her mental health targets and felt she needed it acknowledging just a low key thing.

So she instantly said she wanted her normal - chow mien no bean sprouts, stir fried vegetables no sauce egg fried rice and spring rolls. I add my chicken balls in sweet and sour sauce, and we’re both happy we share this and she always has some left over noodles for supper !

now here’s the problem DH says that’s boring we always get the same, tonight he got special fried rice house special curry and lamb with spring onions and ginger. Fine that’s what he wants I really don’t see the problem.

but then when we’re eating I suggest he has some chicken (I would never eat them all) and he has some spring rolls, fine there’s plenty we’re all still happy. But the he starts, I should try what he ordered, I being boring, I point out I can’t eat his rice that’s why we get the egg fried, I can’t eat pork or prawns both of which are in his curry and I can’t eat onions so the lambs out. Would I like his meal - yes, can I eat it no/

he went on and on saying a ltltle wouldn’t hurt, but trust me - it will. And anyway, we’re happy with what we have, it’s what we like.

am I being unreasonable saying that whereas it’s nice to share a takeout, ultimately each person has their own wants and it’s really not an issure.

honestly it’s the same with pizza, a large mixed vegetables no onion extra pineapple DD and I are happy, he always ridicules it as boring whilst he tucks unto his large mixed meat spicy whatever it is he has then complains all night with indigestion.

it takes the joy out of the treat.

DD and I have learned to just let him get on with it, and we enjoy ourselves, but sometimes like tonight, I could just poke the chop stick somewhere!

sorry rant over

and just to say the chicken balls covered in sauce were amazing tonight.

Just say "DH, you know I can't eat certain foods due to IBS, please stop doing this every time we get a takeaway as you are taking the enjoyment out of it".

itsthetea · 15/03/2026 18:46

It’s meant to be a treat ffs - if his idea of a treat is making you eat something you don’t want that’s a pretty unhealthy way for him to get his kicks

You lost me at sharing a takeaway. I order what I want, and then I eat it. If I wanted what someone else had I would have ordered it.

My husband and I always share because that way we get to eat more things. A Chinese is always enough for 2-3 people anyway so there’s no point us both ordering everything each. Our usual order is:

Duck pancakes
Chicken Foo Yung with chow mein
Salt and pepper chicken with chips
Prawn Crackers

It always does us both two meals each (except pancakes) and then there’s always enough Foo Yung and chow mein left for a single third meal that I let him have as I’m sick of the sight of it by then.

Watch the takeaway episode of Gavin and Stacey!

He's being an arse. I am not a fussy eater and happily shared takeaways until I became gluten intolerant (maybe coeliac) and dairy intolerant a few years ago (possibly triggered by covid). I'd love to be able to eat and try whatever I like, but I can't. It's a bit of a source of inconvenience to the family, but dh would never be such an idiot as to suggest I try something I can't eat.

hattie43 · 15/03/2026 08:18

YABU because it’s a silly thing to get worked up over .

Sparklinggreen · 15/03/2026 08:00

You should be able to order whatever you want!

Your order is your choice and his order is his business!

Odd of him to be bothered by what your eat/order

To be honest takeaways are expensive, and i am fussy, so I stick to what I know i will enjoy. Don't want to chuck £15 away on an experiment Wink

This!!! 😂

Chorusgirl · 14/03/2026 17:43

IYKYK

chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, a bag of chips, a keema naan, and nine poppadoms

I want no part of it!

MulberryFresser · 14/03/2026 16:55

I am very sensitive to MSG, too much spice, too many onions so I tend to get takeaway from a select few shops. I sympathise with OP and her DD - what’s wrong with a few tried and tested faves?

I have had grilled prawns from Colombo Kitchen for 3 weeks in a row. No issues x

Vodka1 · 14/03/2026 16:53

I don't think you can get mad he offered you his food if you offered yours first

I always get the same take away even if I fancy trying something new I'd get that on the side & suck up the cost, take outs are farrr to expensive to risk a complete meal change on.

My thoughts exactly. If I'm spending I don't want to hate eat it if I dont like it as they're not cheap (but I'm too cheap to waste it)

LostInTheDream · 14/03/2026 16:45

YANBU. Whilst I do think sharing a takeout is great if you have either pre agreed to do so or if the offer of trying a bit is made and accepted (or declined), I definitely think it's fine to say no thanks if it won't agree with you. It is a good way of trying different things but you should be obligated to order different from normal so DH can try more new things. I can't otherwise understand why he cares so much about your orders.

PonyPatter44 · 14/03/2026 16:15

Does he not believe that you have IBS? What a numpty.

Keep on ordering the things you like, and ignore his nonsense.

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 14/03/2026 16:11

If its really upsetting you then have a word with him at a separate time. Especially if dd has mental health challenges. He probably thinks it's just banter/joking. If he knows you find it hurtful/ot takes the joy out of your takeaway then he's a dick and it is a bit of a red flag that he would knowingly piss on your chips....
Of course everyone should eat whatever they want and not eat whatever they don't want. That's pretty obvious. Personally, I normally have a favourite plus something new, and we try/share one another's. If I didn't want something my husband would never force it or be mean, it's a real non issue.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 14/03/2026 15:53

I hate bitty meals with lots of tiny separate flavours - hate buffets and tapas. Always gives me indigestion to have a mix of cold/hot etc

I'm on a particular diet pre-gallbladder surgery, and I have to admit I'm really enjoying the complete lack of pain and indigestion as a side effect. He probably suffers on a low level every day without knowing it.

Mimicking · 14/03/2026 15:29

I thought it was mandatory to order the same food from a takeaway each time! 😂

Sophabulous · 14/03/2026 14:48

I’d understand to a degree if he wasn’t ever given the opportunity to get what he would like but he obviously does and is just trying to force it on you as well? That’s very strange.

We’re a get a little bit of allsorts and divvy it up household and works fine for us with no complaints 🤷‍♀️

Cantstopthenoise · 14/03/2026 14:44

I'm set in my ways with takeaways and eating out (both daughters are the same) so tend to order the same thing each time. My Dad is the only person I know who would tease me or pass comment, whilst everyone else accepts it and won't judge me for it. I would rather eat what I know I like and am comfortable with than risk something I don't like or that won't agree with me.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 14/03/2026 10:02

I order the same thing each time so I know I’m going to enjoy it!

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 14/03/2026 09:45

Tell him it's great he can eat what he wants and you hope he never has IBS or any issues which means even a small amount of something makes him feel sick as a dog but until he does he doesn't get to try and dictate what you should be trying.

Yourcousinrachel · 14/03/2026 08:57

IHate · 13/03/2026 23:18

YANBU, but you sound like an incredibly picky eater.

@IHate
I might have thought that at one time, but then i had severe postviral digestive issues and pain that lasted a year in my 40s. Its horrid to be hungry and frightened of what eating a food might do to you..... I never dreamed i would😆"get" anything like that.

Now, i am a whole lot more understanding about"picky".

Fiftyandme · 14/03/2026 08:15

He’s boorish. Is he like this all the time with everything? Is his view abc opinion the only correct one? Does he regularly try to make you abc your DD feel small?

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 14/03/2026 08:10

P.S Agreed it’s bloody expensive so you need to be happy!
