AIBU to question why taxpayers should fund Ian Huntley’s cremation?

Can't Ian Huntleys mother who was at his bedside and in touch with him, pay for his cremation.
Why should the tax payer pay?
He's already cost the taxpayer loads.🤔😫

Stop making things up. I never said because she visits she was responsible . Weird, what you've read into it.

So why are you trying to make this expense her responsibility? The only logical argument to do so is that she shares the fault so should pick up the cost.

None of this is her fault, she is bereaved and the costs in not her responsibility and frankly you don’t want her getting a big, complex funeral- quick and quiet with minimum ceremony is best for all concerned.

If you’re worried about public spending I’m sure there are more fruitful things you could look in to.

Yes I’m not sure how anyone would know this for sure unless someone leaked to the press or something.

Well quite...

Because no-one has to pay for their relatives cremations.

What? That's news to me.

EverythingGolden · 13/03/2026 08:30

BatchCookBabe · 13/03/2026 08:27

Just be grateful he's dead @PassingStranger How do you know taxpayers are funding his cremation anyway?

Why? No-one forces them to take on this sort of job. Presumably some business is better than none.

Oh come on now! This is disposal of a human body for the sake of hygiene and the law. No one is asking a funeral company to put on horse drawn carriages and a big fancy send off, they’re asking them to facilitate the movement of a corpse from a hospital to a temporary morgue and then on to a cremation facility. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any company being willing to take on that responsibility. They’ll get very little cash for it. It’s something that has to be done and someone has to do it.

EverythingGolden · 13/03/2026 08:24

QuickBrown · 13/03/2026 07:38

Body disposal costs vary by region, but also by job. Murdered prisoners will always come with a risk of someone acting unpredictably, mostly protesters, but possibly fans. Funeral directors can turn down work that isn't attractive. The government has a responsibility to ensure bodies are disposed of in a hygienic way.

I think people using the word funeral are skewing views a bit. It isn't a funeral in the sense of a eulogy, some hymns and a poem. It is disposal of a corpse.

I’m not sure that’s totally correct. I’ve been to government funded cremations and it is a basic funeral service. I’ve not been to any prisoner ones but I don’t think that would be different. I don’t know what happens if there is absolutely nobody attending having said that.

He Wasn’t. He was assaulted in prison. He didn’t die in prison.

Do you think it might’ve been different if she grew up knowing him?

As I understand it, she only found out he was her dad at like 15, so very unlikely they ever met. She’s basically a random relative, they never had a relationship.

MissMoneyFairy · 13/03/2026 08:17

He did get compensation before so may have his own funds but that's for the prison and courts to decide.

EverythingGolden · 13/03/2026 08:17

Phoenix1Arisen · 13/03/2026 07:52

If 'someone other than the taxpayer ought to fund the funeral' it seems logical to me that the person who caused the death should be paying - as in the concept that actions have consequences.

It’s not highly likely he’s got any money either though. The state would probably spend more money trying to recoup funds from people than it would just doing the cremations.

MsGreying · 13/03/2026 08:16

Cos hanging his corpse up for the birds to eat us against lots of laws.

sunsetsites · 13/03/2026 08:12

PassingStranger · 12/03/2026 23:07

But if her funds allow why can't she pay?

No one is obligated to pay for anyone’s funeral.
She’s not responsible for the actions of her son, you’re conflating things due to your feelings of IH.

UncannyFanny · 13/03/2026 08:11

DestinedToBeOutlived · 12/03/2026 23:08

Her son was murdered in prison.

She shouldn't have to pay.

He Wasn’t. He was assaulted in prison. He didn’t die in prison.

EverythingGolden · 13/03/2026 08:11

She might not have the money or maybe that’s all the money she has and she needs to put it aside for her own funeral. I don’t begrudge this in any way. Tax payers money has to cremate people sometimes, it can’t really be avoided.

Not as much as Holly and Jessica’s Parents have suffered and will continue to suffer for the rest of their lives.

Her suffering will have been very different to the girls parents but I suspect if suffering could be quantified she’d be found to have suffered just as much in her own way.

x2boys · 13/03/2026 08:09

PassingStranger · 12/03/2026 23:34

Not as much as the victims families.
She still had her son.

Her son brutally murdered two young girls imagine having to live with that ?
Than he was also brutally murdered in prison
I Won't lose any sleep over what happened to him but I have some compassion for his mother .

He died while under care of the state

Starbright102 · 13/03/2026 00:41

I dont recall the gov paying Holly and Jessica's parents £3k each for their funerals

Both families received compensation. It was something like 11k each

CreamolaFoam26 · 13/03/2026 08:04

Bertiebiscuit · 12/03/2026 23:52

Her son murdered 2 innocent girls, he doesn't deserve a publicly funded cremation - I'm with his daughter, "flush him down the toilet".

But they’d still have to cremate him first.

Needspaceforlego · 13/03/2026 08:03

SpringsOnTheWay · 13/03/2026 08:01

Yes the government do contribute to children’s funerals
there’s actually all sorts of grants for funerals provided by the government.

Thanks I didn't know that. I'll count my blessings its not something I've ever had to deal with.

Needspaceforlego · 13/03/2026 08:02

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 13/03/2026 07:38

That is not guaranteed

The family would need to prove that the prison service failed to protect him

They would need to prove there was a credible threat that the prison service knew about and did nothing about

I would be surprised if the family pursue this given the bad publicity they would get

He's been attacked before, and the murderer got their hands on a metal bar.

So yes they knew he was a target and they knew he was in with other violent men. So yes they failed to protect him

But I don't grudge his poor mum a bit of compensation, she's suffered too because of him.
