Hallway colour crisis

Well this was the colour I wanted. Tailor Tack. For our tiny little entrance, stairway and upstairs little landing. Can't even call it a hallway really because we have no hallway. I wanted to make it look lovely. But we couldn't justify the cost of F&B.
So based on me wanting a pale white pink, DH bought Blossom White Dulux and we've just spent the week prepping and decorating, it has taken 5 days, using precious annual leave time to do it whilst DC are at school and out of the way.
It's nothing like it looked online or in the colour chart pamphlet, or in the tester patch.
Online and in the Dulux colour chart it looked a very pale chilled out pink.
In my hall it is.....basically bright lilac.
It's not the colour I wanted at all😰
DH has hit the roof and said "You do this every time! We decorate a room after weeks on end of looking at different shades of different colours, then when it's done you always say you don't like it!!!". Which I can't deny. But the colours never look the same on the walls as they do on the charts, or even the tester pot patches!
Oh, forgot to say, we started off painting it what looked like a lovely sedate green on the colour chart but it looked like grey sludge on my walls so we abandoned it 1/4 way through and that caused a row in itself. And a waste of money.
I wanted a nice, very pale, calm, muted white pink.
What I've got is bright lilac, maybe you could call it bright but pale lavender.
It literally looks NOTHING like the Dulux images of the colour on their website.
It looks nothing like other images of it online.
It's done now and I will be able to live with it though I am upset because I wanted to love it. I wanted to walk in and love the colour that greeted me. Instead I think "urgh, don't like it".
DH likes it!
DD 10 is skipping around saying it's the best colour ever!!!
But DS 14 absolutely HATES it. He literally hates it. He's saying "I love our house, why have you painted the hallway bright purpley-pink?!?! It's horrible!".
This morning DH said to DS "Is the colour growing on you?" And DS said "I can't even talk about it" whilst looking mortified.
I feel really bad for him.
Should I lump it, having both spent a week of AL working on it? And just tell DS he'll have to live with it?
Or change it and risk a massive fall out with DH? He won't take any more AL to do it all over again so it'd be me on my own. And he'll argue about the time and cost involved.
And if I buy another 7.5 litres of a different colour paint, I may as well have just paid more for F&B and got Tailor Tack in the first place😪
We have an absolutely tiny little house with a tiny little hallway. I wish we could move to a more spacious house but we can't. So I thought 'Okay, just make the best of what we've got' and I was trying to create a beautiful entrance/stairs/landing. I've seen tiny houses on Pinterest/Instagram that still look lovely if they're decorated absolutely beautifully and tastefully. That's what I was trying to achieve but have failed.
So
Leave it be, or go through the pain of changing it?

The other 3 members of the family don’t like it though, and assuming the OP is willing to do the redecorating herself, why should his opinion take priority over everyone else’s?

DD loves it. So it's a 50 50 split.

Yes, op might do the work herself, but there's still costs involved.

It would be better to discuss and find a compromise, like leave it for a month to see if it grows on her. Rather than making a unilateral decision

FasterMichelin · 12/03/2026 09:45

You can make any colour look great with accessories. Nice family prints, matching frames. Plants and coordinating textiles.

I know it doesn’t help now, but I usually go a shade lighter than I like, as when painted in a large space, colours often darken. You’ll get used to it, it’s nice!

apintofwine · 12/03/2026 09:44

You can try your luck with Brewers but they usually have some disclaimer about it not matching.

Painters World online are brill. I always use them - order Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt Tinted Colour, then just type in “Farrow and Ball Tailor Tack” and they will colour match it for half the price of F&B, but for a great quality paint.

If you order by 1pm(I think) it’ll arrive next day. Never let me down!

TailorTack · 12/03/2026 09:38

Hmmm that's interesting thst you make sure you go to Brewers.
We did go to Brewers. But it's different colour to the Dulux tester pot patches we painted.
So I am questioning whether Brewers made it up correctly.
I just held up blossom white on Dulux website on the iPad, held it against the walls we've painted, and DH looked and completely agreed it's a different colour, he said our walls look purple/lilac, and said it's nothing like the Dulux blossom white tester patch we painted first of all.
But he says he refuses to redecorate and paint over it.
I hate lilac!😣

Of course it’s not the same colour on the iPad. The colours you will see online and on the chart near no real relation to the actual colours.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 12/03/2026 09:43

Having seen the photo you posted, it definitely looks lilac. So disappointing after all your hard work.

For what it’s worth, I think the F&B Tailor Tack is a much ‘cleaner’ pink, and, tbh, the cost is worth it. I used F&B in my kitchen over 12 years ago, and it doesn’t fade at all. I had to repaint a few bits over the years, and there’s absolutely no difference in the colour. I think that’s good value.

7238SM · 12/03/2026 09:42

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but I only recently discovered peel and stick paint samples. The paint has already been painted on paper for you, and you can stick it on the wall and remove again. Much easier than buying sample pots, painting a patch or paper yourself to then try to stick on the wall.

Several companies sell them, and often cheaper than a sample pot. Strangely, I ordered some from brewers last week online and only 85p each compared to a sample pot which was I think £3.50. One colour I tried was Fondant: 'Fondant is a warm, pastel pink with great versatility.'
https://www.brewers.co.uk/product/AA501190/fondant. The sample I have is a pale pink and looks similar to what you wanted. I hope you get it sorted.

HumbleStumble · 12/03/2026 09:41

Dear me, 5 days of annual leave to make it look like the waiting area in a community health centre. It sounds like the paint got made up incorrectly.

Aluna · 12/03/2026 09:40

Tailor Tack may even be too strong and bear in mind you will be painting it on pink not white which will affect the shade.

I can absolutely see all of that taking 5 days especially if you had to stop at 3:30! It's very time consuming! It takes me absolutely forever to do decorating and I'm currently putting off doing our hall because of how much work it is. You've done a great job. Maybe the colour will grow on you? It's not awful. But if you really hate it then sadly I think it will be another couple of coats of something else on top 😣

TailorTack · 12/03/2026 09:38

dudsville · 12/03/2026 07:45

I feel your pain. Did you get it from a shop like Brewers that mix it, or from a shop like b&q that have it already mixed? I learned a costly and highly irritating mistake that for the colour of dulux I want, I have to get it from Brewers.

Hmmm that's interesting thst you make sure you go to Brewers.

You're showing yourself up now using such misogynistic language. Plus, everyone else thought the same. You've now added on the extra work, which explains the time taken but your original post didn't.

ThiagoJones · 12/03/2026 09:38

randomchap · 12/03/2026 09:31

If you do that, and the colour doesn't match, then you will have to repaint.

Considering DH likes it, and doesn't want to redecorate, do you really want to force his hand like that?

Definitelyrandom · 12/03/2026 09:37

I agree with the posters recommending Johnstone's Decorating Centre online for replicating colours of expensive heritage brands. I look at Little Greene and then match up a colour. For walls we use their more expensive version and it goes on beautifully. Still half the price of the posh brands.

Aluna · 12/03/2026 09:34

TailorTack · 12/03/2026 08:06

OMG it literally looks nothing like this colour.
I love the colour shown here!
It is nothing like it.
We got it from Brewers and a staff member made it up. He used a tin of white then added colours to make it up. It's in a Dulux tin. But it is not like the colour you've linked which is the colour we'd looked at. Do you know what, I'm starting to think he's made it up wrong......
I've added my stairway image but MN has said it's sensitive content and hidden it. It's just a stairway wall!😂

Edited

No he hasn’t made it up wrong it’s just that live paint colours look nothing like the photos or charts as posters have said.

You must use testers to paint the darkest and lightest corners.

As a general rule you need a couple of shades lighter than the one you think you want on the chart, unless you’re painting the exterior when it goes the other way.

randomchap · 12/03/2026 09:31

TailorTack · 12/03/2026 09:11

If you still have a tester, can you paint a patch under a picture frame or mirror where it won't be seen and compare? Maybe it genuinely isn't the same, or maybe it's the lighting.

That's a good idea. I hadn't thought of that. We've got no tester left as I used it all up to paint a big patch on the wall. The tester patch looked lovely. The paint from the big tin we got looks completely different. DH says it's because it's now all over walls that it looks different to the patch test.
Like I say upthread, we didn't buy it off the shelf, we got it from Brewers and a young man (looked around 19/20) made it up by adding colours to a tin of white paint. I am wondering if he's made it up wrong.
I think I'll take your advice, buy a new tester, paint a patch over the wall we've painted, and take a photo and show the colour difference to staff in Brewers....

If you do that, and the colour doesn't match, then you will have to repaint.

Considering DH likes it, and doesn't want to redecorate, do you really want to force his hand like that?

Changename12 · 12/03/2026 09:30

YABU. Lighting makes all the difference. I had Dulux blossom white years ago in one of my daughter’s bedrooms. It looked like the colour chart, not like your photograph.
You cannot mix the same shades with cheaper paint as you can with more expensive paints. It is due to the more expensive pigments used.

Sunsetseascape · 12/03/2026 09:29

Decorating 101 - colours (even pale ones) always look significantly darker once the full wall/room is done. Pick a shade you like, then take it down in saturation by at least 3 shades to get what’s actually in your mind. Coupled with this being in a small, presumably a bit shadowy hallway, you’re going to magnify that problem.

In this case, especially given you said the shop mixed the paint, I’d definitely compare a proper dulux sample chart to your wall to check if they made the right colour. If they didn’t, I’d be going back for a free replacement. Of course that doesn’t account for your wasted time unfortunately.

MotherofPufflings · 12/03/2026 09:25

Have you tried painting a bit of the sample colour and then a bit from the big pot next to each other on some paper to see whether they did the colour match incorrectly?

Alwaystired23 · 12/03/2026 09:25

Could you go back to the shop with some photos and say the correct colour wasn't made up? They should make you up the new correct colour free of charge, I would have thought.

Hopefully it won't take as.long to repaint, as it sounds as if all the other work is done.

It does not look lilac here. Could the lilac effect be due to the lighting?

Looks lilac to me. Just a very pale lilac. It has more blue undertones than red i think.

Taylor Tack looks much pinker.
The thing is you have done the long winded bit with all your prep, op. So not timed wasted. Is it possible you can go and just buy a colour match and whack a couple of coats on at the weekend?

The online decorating centre are great at colour marching and giving advice.

That's very lilac and if you fancied Tailor Tack not even slightly close. I have TT on one wall in my bedroom and it is very very pale. Almost unnoticeable. I have taken some pictures for you so you can see what it looks like.

Johnstones do good farrow and ball copies. Leave it a while, then change it. Maybe a pink /neutral. Coat do good ones and a paint shop can do a good copy. My whole house is done in copies of expensive paints and they look pretty good.

MotherofPufflings · 12/03/2026 09:18

Also The Paint Shed has given me good colour matches to F&B

And that’s ok, we don’t all have to agree on everything.
Back to paint colours… Decorating Centre Online are really good for mixing copies of Farrow and Ball colours. I use them for all of my paint.
