As above.

They are ridiculous things that add massively to landfill, and after this disastrous fire in Glasgow it's been proven how dangerous they are!

The original point of them was to help people give up smoking. The idea was that you use vapes for a few months, lessening the nicotine in them every few weeks, until your cravings have subsided.

People start vaping now just for the hell of it. Including teenagers, because they have them in sweet and appealing flavours!

Time to stop making these things!

Glasgow vape shop blaze destroys iconic city centre buildings

More than 60 firefighters were battling a blaze in Glasgow last night which erupted after an “explosion” in a city centre vape shop. They tackled flames which were sweeping towards the …

I mean, socially? I would prefer they smoked.

Regarding the individuals health…well, I’m not convinced that vaping is much better. We just don’t have the same length of time as cigarettes to see the effects.

Exactly. Why people believe that steaming chemicals into the lungs is any safer than smoking them is beyond me. I'm a very heavy smoker and I'm constantly being told I should vape instead. Er no thanks. At least with cigarettes I know what could happen, vapes are even worse I think and it's awful that people who have never smoked in their lives decide to vape. As many pp have said teenagers especially

They are a harm reduction tool for former smokers. They are many percentage points healthier than cigarettes. The teen issue is a whole other thing.

Only around half of people who vape are former smokers though.

scalt · 09/03/2026 15:58

Mumsnet’s answer to everything: ban this, ban that.

I don’t like vapes, or the litter that goes with them (bins are covered in those little labels “remove to use”: it took me a while to work out they come from vapes), but I do think vapes are the lesser of two evils, compared with smoking.

Terriblytwee · 09/03/2026 15:57

They are like dummies for adults. Get rid.

I feel like the people who used them to stop smoking have sacrificed a whole generation that would have never vaped.

I didn’t smoke or vape born in 92, but the generation below me are vaping. They wouldn’t have smoked or vaped if these things didn’t exist.

I think those old school smokers that want to quit need to do it a different way.

Or make them available on prescription as a treatment for smoking addicition / harm reduction, rather than available in shops regardless of age restriction. And I say that as someone who vapes.

FunnyOrca · 09/03/2026 14:36

Completely agree.

We need more studies on them! I knew very little about them but initially liked the sweet smell when I walked by someone. Now I realise how toxic (at least) some of them are! I want more information about the second hand inhalation.

And yes, this dreadful fire! Vape shops are popping up everywhere (teen market? Can’t order to home lest parents see?) and to see how the shop was just rows and rows of accelerant? Terrifying.

What do you mean by toxic?

They are disgusting things, why do humans need to suck on these things, feel same way about cigarettes. Its weird when you think about it.

Nutmuncher · 09/03/2026 15:47

I just have to look at vapers and get an immediate ick. Everything about the things is grim, the smell, how they look, the cloud of vile sickly fumes. Gross.

Obviously for those using them as a means to quit smoking they’re a great temporary tool, better than smoking just don’t get addicted to them.

VapeHelp · 09/03/2026 15:45

I’m an ex smoker, now I vape. I have had the same vape for over a year and buy refill juice. I feel 100% healthier than I did when I smoked, I’ve not had a cold or a cough for a year. I’m not adding to landfill, the bottles are recyclable.

BUT… I think anything remotely disposable should be banned, I think the sale of them should be age restricted to 21/25+, I think all the stupid flavours should be outlawed immediately (can’t buy a menthol cig but can buy doughnut or Bavarian slice flavour vapes!) and I think all the tacky shops should be closed down. They’re ruining high streets for starters, many of them are covers for money laundering and loads sell cheap dangerous knock offs.

They are a scourge on society but at the same time have definitely helped me and others who were addicted to smoking. The problem is the sheer amount of the shops and their target audience ie kids. Outlaw all the hideous drinks and American style sweets that these shops sell, too.

Dollymylove · 09/03/2026 15:43

I know a few people who have never smoked but taken up vaping. How mad is that?
Many of these shops are fronts for money laundering like the barbers and the nail salons. Its about time the authorities cleared them all out

Mrscharlieeeee · 09/03/2026 15:42

I was a smoker from probably 2000ish until 2014, I was more of a social smoker and could stop and start easy enough. Once the smoking ban came in I became pretty much a seasonal smoker as no way was I standing in the rain and cold for a fag. I then stopped for several years until probably 2022 ish when I tried w vape on a night out. From there I vaped all the time, it curbed my appetite and as it didn’t leave a lingering smell I would vape everywhere; house, car etc. My kids started being more aware and I started to feel really embarrassed by it but it took a bout of Covid for me to stop. I felt so ill for days and had tightness in my chest so the last thing I wanted was to vape. As if made it through nearly a week I decided to keep going and I’m now approaching 6 months vape free. So glad to be off them.

patate10 · 09/03/2026 15:38

Should be px only for heavy smokers who can't quit. The teenage vaping issue is INSANE (dd1 Im looking at you).

DeepfriedPizza · 09/03/2026 15:38

HoldingTheDoor · 09/03/2026 14:47

There’s a lot of dodgy vapes around and a quick Google reveals a lot of fires/explosions caused by vapes. Obviously we don’t yet know the cause of this fire but they have resulted in a considerable number of fires.

There are reports on social media from an eye witness that there was an overloaded charging plug/extension cable that was on fire. It would then have spread to the vape batteries and beyond.

I am near Glasgow and we are devestated by this and hope that it starts talks about tougher legislation. There have been a number of reports of batteries causing fires in bin lorries etc. Having a shop full off vapes all stored next to each other is not the way to operate and that needs to change.

Catspace · 09/03/2026 15:38

Satsuma55 · 09/03/2026 15:07

I love my vape.

Me too. I haven’t smoked now for 14 years. The shopkeepers shouldn’t be selling the vapes to kids.

JellyCatsOnToast · 09/03/2026 15:36

The fact that a historic building is burned don because of a stupid bloody vape shop. Is there anything more 2026?

This thread is about health risks of smoking vs vapes, and that’s valid, but do we really need thousands of knock off vape shops everywhere?

nevernotmaybe · 09/03/2026 15:36

GoldAndSilverBells · 09/03/2026 14:29

Exactly. And there is no evidence that vaping is any safer than cigarettes. They were created to stop people smoking, not to just randomly smoke for shits and giggles! God knows what long term harm is going to come from them.

I actually generally agree with you.

But it is very obvious they are safer than breathing in smoke, tar, and thousands of poisons and carcinogens into the lungs.

There is evidence they might not be completely safe, and there might be some issues in the future. But I dont think there is any suggestion they aren't much, much safer than smoking from anywhere. The consensus is they have potential issues, but are certainly vastly safer than smoking.

They were not created to help people give up smoking. They were created to make a lot of money. They were marketed on the ‘it’ll help smokers’ ticket, but anyone with an ounce of understanding of humans knew that before long, loads of people would be using them who would never have smoked cigarettes.

Same batteries that are in your phone and laptop that is in those vapes.

Same technology yes, but often shoddy manufacturing, like some batteries in electric scooters.

I do understand what you're saying, but I'm on the fence with this one.

I smoked for 18 years and didn't think I'd ever stop. I just didn't want to because I enjoyed it so much. A friend gave me a disposable vape on a night out last year, and I ended up switching to vaping - with the intention of using it as a tool to quit smoking.

Vaped for six months and then switched to nicotine gum. I'm now weaning myself off the gum and will be nicotine free by May. I don't think I'd have even attempted to quit if vaping hadn't been an option. Having vapes (which were easily available) as a stop gap between cigarettes and nicotine gum, eased the transition for me.

This is what they were initially invented for, which is great. What isn't great is that many people (mostly teens) start with vapes and never stop. As long as manufacturers make all the cool and yummy flavours, this will only continue.

I dont like them . Horrible sickly smell..I wiuld rather walk behind a smoker than a vaper and I dont believe they are any safer than fags. They havent been around long enough to find out what long term.damage they can do. Remember in the past they thought smoking tobacco was good for you!!

Given cancer research back then, I’m pretty confident in my choices. They’ve been around a long time now. I started vaping (or tried my first one) in 2013

HelloCheekyCat · 09/03/2026 15:12

this one shop had an incident out of all the millions of vapes lying around in houses, warehouses etc.

Having spoken to a fireman recently they get called to fires at landfills regularly caused by binned vapes so not as dramatic as this fire but still dangerous

FartyAnimal · 09/03/2026 15:12

Vapes are like dummies for adults. And have created a whole new addiction for teens. They are awful things.
