As above.

They are ridiculous things that add massively to landfill, and after this disastrous fire in Glasgow it's been proven how dangerous they are!

https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/16014837/glasgow-vape-shop-blaze-tears-through-iconic-city-centre/

The original point of them was to help people give up smoking. The idea was that you use vapes for a few months, lessening the nicotine in them every few weeks, until your cravings have subsided.

People start vaping now just for the hell of it. Including teenagers, because they have them in sweet and appealing flavours!

Time to stop making these things!

Take away the risk aspect…and it’s still fucking annoying.

do I want to smell candied watermelon or whatever bollocks flavour it is? No.
do I want to be breathing that in? No

getting stuck walking down the street behind someone vaping is hideous.

which is why it can’t be compared to drinking alcohol.

Walking behind someone vaping, you may find annoying.

but is is really more annoying than all the antisocial stuff alcohol causes? People shouting, aggressive behaviour, people throwing up on the streets. Littering at 2am all the food wrappers after a visit to Chickin’ Lickin’

Vaping is considerably less anti social

I’m not advocating for their use in an enclosed space.

My point was, beer gardens, bus stops, the usual outdoor places people vape - poses a risk so low it's practically unmeasurable.

There is increasing evidence that the vapour and residue is harmful to 3rd parties, particularly children and those suffering from asthma. It triggers my otherwise rarely active and mild allergic asthma, for instance so I can’t be in an enclosed space with anyone vaping.

So I shall continue to be vitriolic in my dislike of them.

I’m going to start walking past people in the pub and telling them it’s time to give up alcohol. See how that goes down

Exactly. Why don’t people just keep their noses out of what doesn’t concern them.

I find the vitriol people have towards vaping a bit odd.

unlike smoking, there’s no danger to a 3rd party, so essentially there’s no anti social element to them.

Yes landfill is an issue, but that’s because the government failed to actually make disposable vapes illegal (all vapes sold now are technically not disposable, but they’re so cheap most people use them as if they are).

Me too. I haven’t smoked now for 14 years. The shopkeepers shouldn’t be selling the vapes to kids.

Time to stop vaping now then

i was thinking of the schoolgirl that died of popcorn lung

Popcorn lung is bullshit that won’t go away. The chemical is banned in vapes but is still in cigarettes. There aren’t thousands of smokers struck down with it

Socially it is surely better for society that people aren’t dying prematurely or needing years of support for smoking related illnesses? If people are three times more likely to successfully beat their addiction to nicotine using vapes than the alternative patches or gum then removing that option is obviously going to have an impact.
The concept that addiction could just, you know, stop their addiction by not doing it, is fairly obtuse.

Ah, I made a mistake - I meant when it comes to socialising, not socially.

FoxyLoxyWolfedChickenLicken · 09/03/2026 17:56

Central Station was NOT on fire, it was a building close to it.

fashionqueen0123 · 09/03/2026 17:56

GoldAndSilverBells · 09/03/2026 16:33

I know right. They have covered up cigarettes, yet vapes are everywhere on view!

It’s an absolute joke. The gov have let teenagers get sick and addicted to them. They weren’t even smoking and smoking rates were falling!

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 17:50

Toomuchprivateinfo · 09/03/2026 14:50

Many people (especially young people) start vaping having never smoked. Vaping is way more addictive than smoking and delivers much higher levels of nicotine.

But would they have started smoking instead? Is there a net drop in smokers? I think it’s fairly short sighted to be making these statements if you don’t know the impact.

dappledligh · 09/03/2026 17:49

TheDandyLion · 09/03/2026 14:20

Same batteries that are in your phone and laptop that is in those vapes.

I don’t throw my phone and laptop in the bin daily

DdraigGoch · 09/03/2026 17:48

CandidRaven · 09/03/2026 16:18

I think adults should be allowed to purchase whatever they like, vapes, cigarettes, alcohol, I'd say alcohol is far worse than a vape but there's no call to ban that and nor should there be for adults who can make their own decisions.

When did alcohol last set a railway station on fire?

Alcohol is heavily regulated. You need a licence to sell it. Maybe there should be proper licencing for retailing vapes, to ensure that they aren't distributing iffy imports, and that they aren't selling to children.

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 17:47

ticketwoes · 09/03/2026 14:41

I did say ‘socially’ in my post. As in, from a social point of view.

also, there’s the third, widely know option of not smoking at all. That would avoid the health issues.

I hate smoking and I hate vaping! Get rid of all of it! People don't need to be doing either.

People don’t need to drink alcohol either or eat chocolate, should we get rid of those too?
ban vapes and smoking and people will just find another addiction

those vaping that have never smoked are probably the ones like me, I started smoking at school age 12. If vapes had been about I would have done that. At least they’re not smoking

I quit a 40 a day habit with a vape

Toomuchprivateinfo · 09/03/2026 17:25

Verv · 09/03/2026 16:47

So what?
Methadone hasnt solved Heroin use - but it's harm reduction, and that is beneficial regardless of whether mumsnetters think its approproate or not.

Edited

In both cases the ultimate aim should be to stop completely, not just be addicted to something different.
And actually there is emerging evidence of the harms of vaping. They’re a relatively new invention, there is no long term evidence one way or the other and ingesting chemicals on a daily basis is unlikely to be a good thing. Remember people weren’t aware of the awful impact of smoking for many many years.

beadystar · 09/03/2026 17:21

Inextremis · 09/03/2026 14:37

If it wasn't for vapes, I'd still be smoking. I'm all for age limitations and restrictions on buying the things, but not an outright ban.

I’m the same. I plan to give up vaping soon but they helped me quit to the point of being a militant ex-smoker. The smell of cigarettes makes me gag now. (I know it’s a bit illogical).

FartyAnimal · 09/03/2026 15:12

Vapes are like dummies for adults. And have created a whole new addiction for teens. They are awful things.

Your comment reminded me of this. As a Scottish person of a certain age it's permanently embedded in my brain along with 'haw Sarah ah really fancy you so how's about it eh'.

I think that they should be available on prescription only to smokers wanting to quit.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 09/03/2026 17:03

I think they have been hugely beneficial to many people to help quit smoking. Agree that far too many kids have taken up vaping. Maybe they should be prescription only?

AgnesX · 09/03/2026 17:02

Regardless of the Central Station fire, vapes should be banned.

So allegedly they're better than cigarettes? People shouldn't even start using vapes, never mind tobacco products, and they look ridiculous.
