As above.

They are ridiculous things that add massively to landfill, and after this disastrous fire in Glasgow it's been proven how dangerous they are!

https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/16014837/glasgow-vape-shop-blaze-tears-through-iconic-city-centre/

The original point of them was to help people give up smoking. The idea was that you use vapes for a few months, lessening the nicotine in them every few weeks, until your cravings have subsided.

People start vaping now just for the hell of it. Including teenagers, because they have them in sweet and appealing flavours!

Time to stop making these things!

Exactly! Quite a number of people on this thread are COMPLETELY missing the point!!!

I am not on about people using vapes to wean themselves off the cigarettes. I'm on about people who just start using vapes for no reason.

And all that article someone put a link to earlier has proven is that vaping is meant to help you stop smoking. (Just as I said.) NOWHERE in that article does it say it's OK to vape long term and carry on with it! As I said, no-one knows the long term effects of these things. Why start using them, when you have never smoked?

And as you said, it's already been proven that many vapes have much higher levels of nicotine and toxins than actual cigarettes!

As I said, they were created to help you give up smoking. They were NEVER meant to be puffed away at indefinitely.

And no, I wouldn't rather people smoked actual cigarettes (as one poster asked!) 🙄 How about using neither vapes or cigarettes! Ever.

And yes, as a pp said, there is evidence that these are quite dangerous and flammable! And they do cause way more fires than mobile phones (that have the same sort of battery in them,) despite a poster making that comparison earlier on!

Easy to spot the perma vapers on this thread! 😬

I agree with the poster who said, they should available on prescription only, for people trying to quit smoking. They should NOT be for sale to the public. And even then, the 'patient' should only be given them for 6 to 8 months - 12 at the most.

But how is it our problem that some people start vaping without having followed the usage guidelines you just made up?

Would you ban cars because some people are not willing to walk to the grocery store?
Some people are addicted to the gym, would you ban that too?
I've heard of people who are addicted to using a hair dryer, should we all go back to towel dry our hair?

Was it Around 10 years ago that smoking became so much rarer among younger age groups?

I work in a building with a lot of people aged 18-23.

They all vape and they’re all totally addicted.

They can’t go half an hour without sneaking back to their lockers for puffs.

The actual smokers are the model of restraint!

Something has badly gone wrong.

I’m at almost as though the government has lost control isn’t it?

Wow what a load of hyperbole. Why would they put fentanyl in vapes

Why would criminals put fentanyl in unlicensed vapes? Well let me think. as you are obviously unable to. How about in an unregulated factory or manufacturing premises those organised crime gangs are also manufacturing synthetic drugs and cross contamination happens. Is that too hyperbolic for you?

As I said, they were only meant for short term use, to help give up smoking. (So like for a few months... maybe 6-8 at the most.)

.

Edited

While they may have been advocated for this by health professionals, the fact they were developed and are sold by big companies like BAT (British American Tobacco) tells you everything you need to know about why they were invented. They’re designed to be more socially acceptable and to plug the sales gap created by the drop in sales of traditional smoking products. See also - nicotine pouches!

So.. you don't like the smell and its annoying?

I could say the same about walking behind someone with excessive perfume or aftershave, or BO.

Or having to walk past/be in the same space as drunk people (and that can be dangerous for your health, never seen vaping cause someone to hurl abuse or actually attack someone!).

Ban alcohol, drunks are really annoying and sometimes dangerous.

I’ve never been able to smell BO or perfume as far away from someone as I can their vape.

it’s disingenuous to pretend like it’s the same thing.

if you are going to be antisocial, at least own it.

Awful, dreadful things. Young kids getting addicted really early. Young kids ending up in hospital due to dodgy, disposable vapes coming from god knows where. We better bloody hope fentanyl doesn’t end up in the illegal ones as then a great swathe of people will be dead.

And I don't throw my vape in the bin, daily or indeed ever.

What’s your point? Many many do

Sugarfish · 09/03/2026 19:26

Changednameagain999 · 09/03/2026 18:52

Yes but there’ll maybe the odd person who doesn’t do that. Or do they scan for them in luggage?

They scan and confiscate any in checked luggage. Vapers are more likely to want to keep them in hand luggage anyway as it’s easier to access them after the flight, or so they can vape once through security if the airport has a smoking area.

They’re not being thrown in your bin though, as most vapers do with their vapes.

That's a bit of a generalisation. Why do you think all vapers aren't environmentally aware? I dispose of my vape batteries in the proper way.

YourWinter · 09/03/2026 19:06

TheDandyLion · 09/03/2026 14:20

Same batteries that are in your phone and laptop that is in those vapes.

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 17:50

But would they have started smoking instead? Is there a net drop in smokers? I think it’s fairly short sighted to be making these statements if you don’t know the impact.

“But would they have started smoking instead?”

Who knows, but probably less likely as it’s no longer socially acceptable and the harmful effects are well known, as well being plastered all over the packaging.

OneKeenPeachRaven · 09/03/2026 19:02

An awful low of very illiberal sentiment on here! I do not smoke, nor vape but:

  • Vaping is orders of magnitude safer than smoking (as agreed by the NHS and the Royal College of Physicians)
  • Negative externalities? Yes, the smell can be irritating if people are inconsiderate, but I was also irritated when someone started eating McDonalds next to me on the bus...
  • Where vaping is permitted, rates of smoking fall faster.
  • Australia is a fairly horrible example - there's a huge illicit market (no regulation or quality control) and a fair bit of organised crime associated with it

Don't sell them to children. By all means restrict disposables for environmental reasons, but let adults do what they want.

IMO we're way too quick to demand authoritarian bans (which very rarely work) in this country.

FunnyOrca · 09/03/2026 18:57

catscatsdogs · 09/03/2026 17:59

Popcorn lung is bullshit that won’t go away. The chemical is banned in vapes but is still in cigarettes. There aren’t thousands of smokers struck down with it

It is banned but there are a whole load of unregulated vapes accessible in this country

nextchapterplease · 09/03/2026 18:57

The vape industry is worth in the region of 40 billion dollars !

Vodkamartini3olives · 09/03/2026 18:56

I love my vape and id fight you to keep it. If we are going to ban them because lithium batteries can be unpredictable we'll have to also.ban phones, smart watches, laptops, tablets, power tools electric cars the list goes on.

If it helps your anxiety, every airline I’ve flown with has the rule that vapes are turned off and in hand luggage

Surely it must be a big risk on aeroplanes? If someone had one in their luggage could it start a fire or was there something else involved in this that triggered it? I’m on holiday at the minute so worried a bit about that.

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 14:25

They have probably save thousands of lives by being used to stop smoking. Would you rather all those people were still smoking?

What about the all the kids you see with them who would probably have never had a chance to take up smoking at all?
Also most people dont use them to stop smoking. They just use them so then can still "smoke" in more social settings.

The government massively dropped the ball with vapes. After all the years it took to turn the public against smoking. So stupid

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/03/2026 18:36

ticketwoes · 09/03/2026 18:16

Take away the risk aspect…and it’s still fucking annoying.

do I want to smell candied watermelon or whatever bollocks flavour it is? No.
do I want to be breathing that in? No

getting stuck walking down the street behind someone vaping is hideous.

which is why it can’t be compared to drinking alcohol.

ForCyanGuide · 09/03/2026 18:28

Walking behind someone vaping, you may find annoying.

but is is really more annoying than all the antisocial stuff alcohol causes? People shouting, aggressive behaviour, people throwing up on the streets. Littering at 2am all the food wrappers after a visit to Chickin’ Lickin’

Vaping is considerably less anti social

And all the lives/ families that are wrecked through alcohol misuse x

Dogs are annoying and they smell. Ban them, I say!!
