As above.

They are ridiculous things that add massively to landfill, and after this disastrous fire in Glasgow it's been proven how dangerous they are!

https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/16014837/glasgow-vape-shop-blaze-tears-through-iconic-city-centre/

The original point of them was to help people give up smoking. The idea was that you use vapes for a few months, lessening the nicotine in them every few weeks, until your cravings have subsided.

People start vaping now just for the hell of it. Including teenagers, because they have them in sweet and appealing flavours!

Time to stop making these things!

12 years old we’re not picking up cigarettes when vape came out. Cigarettes were about to die a death with the last gen to smoke them. Now it’s reopened again.

12 year olds are not using vapes to give up the fags.

Twelve year olds used to take up cigarettes, are vapes worse?

clearlyy · 09/03/2026 22:59

Yes. I’ve quit vaping this week and finding it harder to quit than smoking. I’m 3 days vape free now though! It’s horrible and I was fully convinced it was making me ill all the time. Glad to have got rid.

They have probably save thousands of lives by being used to stop smoking. Would you rather all those people were still smoking?

It’s not happening and probably will never happen.

Probably? Yeah let’s not bother legislating against it and just cross our fingers and hope for the best.

That's a bit of a generalisation. Why do you think all vapers aren't environmentally aware? I dispose of my vape batteries in the proper way.

I didn’t say ALL vapers… but given the mentality of the vapers I have the misfortune to know, I would bet it’s a majority.

notedbiscuits · 09/03/2026 22:23

Also seen vapes with fonts of the same name as branded food and drink. I pick litter and often see various vapes. One was called Tngo with the font of Tango drink.

Definitely targeting teens. Unicorn Shake? Rainbow candy? Bubblegum? Plus seen teens vaping vapes that change light colour with each draw.

I was asking if she’d actually given up.

Also tar isn’t the only health issue. Nicotine also has negative impacts on health.

Interestingly on the other side of the coin there are limited health benefits...for some brains

Studies have shown in brains of individuals schizophrenia that nicotine actually has positive cognitive effects on areas like working memory , attention and information processing
Allevation of negative symptoms via less social withdrawal, decreased lack of motivation and blunted emotions
Normalisation of brain activity
Also shows a reduction in medication side effects

All of which contributes to the statistic of 60-90% of individuals with schizophrenia being smokers. And also the sadly increased mortality rate in part due to smoking related deaths.

And unfortunately highly addictive. However they are looking into nicotinic agonists instead (produces the same effect as nicotine but without the additive component). Which not only could be used to treat schizophrenia but also ADHD and Alzheimer's.

notedbiscuits · 09/03/2026 22:19

Single use vapes were supposed to be banned last June. The manufacturers have found a loophole by putting a USB port in them. I doubt the USB does anything- a dummy.

Plus many vapes are illegal, like e-bikes. A home caught fire a few weeks ago due to an e-bike

Fizbosshoes · 09/03/2026 22:12

if they actually were designed for smokers to give up, why are they in bright colours with sweet flavours? (Which is the complete opposite of how cigarettes are packaged) They are clearly marketed at kids, who weren't smoking in the first place.
My kids both said there were kids vaping in the classrooms at school.

teen DD saw her 30 year old cousin vaping on holiday, she was quite amazed to see an adult vaping, she said she thought it was for year 9s!

vaping looks so silly! My kids are young adults now and they found their peers who took up vaping at school very amusing. And now, proper adults walking around sucking these things just look daft!

I have to agree.

They are disgusting things, why do humans need to suck on these things, feel same way about cigarettes. Its weird when you think about it.

I appreciate they are an alternative for people who want to give up traditional smoking and they are helpful in that respect.

I don't understand the marketing around them. Tobacco products have to be in plain packaging and are hidden away. You have to ask for them at the kiosk.

Vapes are in brightly coloured packaging and heavily visible. They're allowed to be in impulse places to encourage people to pick them up. I know people who've never smoked but they vape now.

Shops are not allowed to promote crisps or chocolate in impulse places because they're bad for health. They're allowed to tempt people with vapes and potentially get them addicted to something where the long term health risks are still as yet unknown. It makes no sense at all.

Batshit isn't? And yet a small minority of posters on here insist on fervently defending it. Quite inexplicable isn't it?! As I said earlier, you can sure spot the vapers on here!

People just seem easily irritable these days, but ok. On the flip I'd ban fast food restaurants and ready made meals whilst we are at it. All these fat people plodding around are a much bigger burden on the NHS for starters. To think people actually consider saturated fat and high salt and sugar levels as a treat for their children....and don't get me started on all the fast food litter.

Then start a thread about this.

Also, LOL at the irony in your post. 😆

I am concerned that anyone can open a vape shop without being trained how to deal with fires (apparently someone used an incorrect extinguisher)
Also the destruction of such old buildings due to vapes is a bit sad.

Perhaps vape shops should be out of town and government controlled.

yesohno · 09/03/2026 21:36

Yes, they need banning. They’re disgusting in my opinion

Vaping is illegal here, except by pharmacists who can sell as a quit aid.

What happened is a smoking war. Tobacconists popped up everywhere selling illegal apes & cheap ciggies. Finally, the police have shut them down. Now they've moved to home delivery sales.

The negative is that people have moved back to illegal traditional cigarettes as vapes are obvious. They stink & I have to smell them despite strict laws on where you can smoke as they ignore it.

But I'm still pleased because my DC won't be sold yummy tasting vapes. DS's 13 year old friend was vaping last year. My friend's 20 something kids had taken it up, along with all their friends.

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 09/03/2026 20:52

They should have been licensed only as a medical device for smoking cessation. It’s unbelievable that we’ve allowed a whole new generation to get addicted tobacco through vapes

Former smoker here, from a long line of smokers. A lot of smokers I knew (grandparents, dad, aunts and uncles) lived pretty long lives. My dad is 70, pack a day, and he is still in pretty good condition all things considered. It’s not healthy and chances are he will get lung cancer or die of something smoking related, but we know exactly what smoking does and you can make an informed choice about the risks. The people I know who vape and have been vaping for a few years are in way worse knick than the smokers. I genuinely think it’s going to come out that it’s worse for you. I know most places don’t let you vape inside, but people do. Loads of people do it and people just vape all the time, so they’re probably doing it more than smokers.

Cognitive dissonance at its finest! 🤣

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 09/03/2026 20:36

Why would criminals put fentanyl in unlicensed vapes? Well let me think. as you are obviously unable to. How about in an unregulated factory or manufacturing premises those organised crime gangs are also manufacturing synthetic drugs and cross contamination happens. Is that too hyperbolic for you?

Edited

Yeah

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 09/03/2026 20:43

I dont know about your local high street but mine goes vape shop, phone shop, Turkish barber, independant newsagent/grocery shop, nail salon, vape shop, Turkish barber, independent food shop, nail salon, charity ahop, Iceland, charity shop, vape shop, Turkish barbers. For a small town we have around 10 barbers shops and at least five vape shops, three phone shops. It’s interesting how empty a lot of those barbers shops are.
