Hate sharing hotel rooms (except with dh)

I am travelling at the minute and ended up leaving the room I was sharing with two female friends last night and paying for my own room. It was the best money I ever spent and I am never sharing a hotel room with anyone other than dh and dcs again.

The issues were a bit of snoring, (which I sometimes do myself tbh, and it wasn't loud so not a big problem), people being messy, leaving worn socks on the table right next to the kettle etc, but the worst thing was one woman having catnaps at dinner time then being awake half the night browsing her phone. Ugh, the light flashing past my face waking me up was so annoying. If you can't sleep, I suppose that's difficult but maybe cut out the pre bedtime snoozes?

Anyway, that is my rant.

Aibu to say that sharing hotel rooms is horrible and to really resent paying for a bad night's sleep?

I'm with your OP, would never share a room with a friend again. I haven't even had any horrible experiences but I just can't relax sleeping in the same room as someone I'm not used to sharing a room with. I'd rather spend a bit extra and get my own space, get up when I want, use the bathroom when I want, control the temperature how I want etc.

It's a personal choice, but I'm pro sharing. Hotel rooms are so expensive for what they are I'm not just going to drop an extra couple of hundred pounds. And it's nice to hang out and chat. Short term only; I'm happy to get home to my own bed and room, but that's an extra pleasure to look forward to!

NB if there was a way I could get out of sharing with DH, I would also jump at that ! It was great when we went to Costa Rica as a lot of the rooms had 2 double beds ( mainly for weirdo Americans who think it’s normal for two couples to share a room) so we had our own solo beds with visiting rights, it was bliss.

Yes, I would love the option of my own room when I wanted it. My friend has just moved into the box room in her house and left her dh in the big double. She loves it

I never share hotel rooms. I need privacy and a room to retreat too. The exception would be a partner, but I'd still prefer my own. I would insist on separate bedrooms if I lived with someone, or I wouldn't live with them.

Always shared when younger and away with friends but now I pay the extra to have my own room and it is pure luxury. Love my pals but also love my own space, I don't always sleep great in hotels so nice to be able to get up walk about or read in the middle of the night if I can't sleep. If enough rooms available most of us opt for own rooms now

The phone woman, (I will call her Cathy), also kept saying loudly to the other woman, who was snoring really not loudly (i will call her Jenny), "Jenny you're snoring", while watching videos on her stupidly bright phone, which meant I was already awake, so now Jenny, Cathy and I are all awake at some silly time of night. Gah! Never again.

And the thing is, as annoying as snoring is (especially if loud), it is a bodily function and the person isn't doing it on purpose. But taking a nap at 7pm and then scrolling tiktok at 3am is a choice. Jenny wasn't snoring loudly either.

YANBU. I’d never share a room other than with my husband

Chemenger · 09/03/2026 08:58

I will share with DH or with my adult DDs but that’s it. If I went away with friends I would happily pay for my own room.

PrincessPig · 09/03/2026 08:57

It is so disruptive and yes, Cathy got really huffy when I moved out. She was also the one who insisted we share a room. I am beginning to think Cathy is a sadist 😂

I pretty much stopped sharing rooms after my friend decided that reading her kindle in the middle of the night would not be disruptive and got a bit huffy with me when I had words after being woken up. Plus I am probably not an ideal companion either as I have frequent night time wees and cannot abide a room being too hot.

I will never share a room, unless it’s with DH! I don’t care how much it costs, my sanity is worth it 😂 l also couldn’t fully relax knowing someone else is sleeping a few feet away.
