Hate sharing hotel rooms (except with dh)

I am travelling at the minute and ended up leaving the room I was sharing with two female friends last night and paying for my own room. It was the best money I ever spent and I am never sharing a hotel room with anyone other than dh and dcs again.

The issues were a bit of snoring, (which I sometimes do myself tbh, and it wasn't loud so not a big problem), people being messy, leaving worn socks on the table right next to the kettle etc, but the worst thing was one woman having catnaps at dinner time then being awake half the night browsing her phone. Ugh, the light flashing past my face waking me up was so annoying. If you can't sleep, I suppose that's difficult but maybe cut out the pre bedtime snoozes?

Anyway, that is my rant.

Aibu to say that sharing hotel rooms is horrible and to really resent paying for a bad night's sleep?

I hate sharing a hotel room. The only people I have ever shared with have been my ex husband (when we were still together obviously!) and my DD when she was much younger. I like my own space and I'm quite a private person. I'm also a very light sleeper and any snoring is guaranteed to keep me awake. I also like being able to use the bathroom as and when I want, can't be doing with waiting around for someone else to finish in there! A good friend of mine wants us to go on holiday together later this year, and says 'It will be fun' to share a room. I said it's not happening 😂

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 09/03/2026 17:03

Nope, never. Even with my sister on a cruise.

PopcornKitten · 09/03/2026 16:50

Two adult couples sharing a room just makes me want to throw up. I just assumed they were super big beds in a twin room!

climbintheback · 09/03/2026 10:05

I shared a room with my sister recently - ear plugs and nytol worked a treat.

CactusSwoonedEnding · 09/03/2026 10:05

Yanbu at all. Sharing a hotel room is only something I used to do when it was the only way to afford something and I had too much fomo to pass on things I couldn't really afford. Nowadays I will happily pay for a single room if I can afford it or will stay at home otherwise.

MargoLivebetter · 09/03/2026 10:04

100% agree! Came out of a long-term relationship last year and even that was a struggle. Other people snoring makes me want to batter them because even with ear plugs and white noise I can still hear the snoring.

I can just about share with DD, but only for a very short time as her chaotic mess gets to me after a while and DS is like an old squeeze box. He wheezes and whistles and snuffles away and then starts up a conversation while he's asleep. Definitely battering territory!!!! When we go away together, he has to be in a separate room.

I'm not sure I could even be friends with someone who leaves their used socks next to the kettle! How old is this woman?!

40!

i think sharing a room with a good friend is fun. But then I’m both a good sleeper and happy to make it clear re my rules on keeping the room tidy 😆 Especially would do it if it means we can then afford a nicer hotel by sharing. Also - always have earplugs in your toiletries bag!

WalkDontWalk · 09/03/2026 09:56

Nah. I'd rather sleep in the car.

BauhausOfEliott · 09/03/2026 09:54

I’d rather stick my head into a mincer than share a room with anyone except my partner.

Iocanepowder · 09/03/2026 09:49

We are all different.

i am happy to share a room with my friends. My sleep doesn’t get disrupted but mostly, we all live a few hours apart so paying for a room each would make it unaffordable to meet more regularly.

Strawberryfruitstarburst · 09/03/2026 09:45

I will only share a hotel room with my partner and child. I won’t even share with my own mum! I need personal space.

YANBU I struggle to sleep in new places anyway but I feel conscious of moving too much or breathing too loud with other people in the room. I was recently invited on a Airbnb trip with a friend, some of the attendees hadn’t met each other before and the plan was for everyone to share double beds! With a stranger! I would rather have had a blanket on the living room floor

Swiftie1878 · 09/03/2026 09:33

100% agree. I refuse to share a bedroom with anyone but DH and DC. When away with friends we usually book an apartment, but all have separate rooms. It’s a deal breaker.

7238SM · 09/03/2026 09:32

Even with DH, we always get a 1 bed apartment, because he wakes early and can go into the lounge area without bothering me.

I haven't shared with friends for over 20yrs. The last was a hen do, but I only knew the bride and 1 other- who ended up in a different room. The rooms were supposed to be adjoining, but ended up on different floors. Unknown to me till we staggered in at 2am, they'd overbooked to save money and expected 3 of us to share double beds. I slept on the floor! Never again.

rookiemere · 09/03/2026 09:29

@Sartre I could never share a dorm in a hostel, the thought of ending up on the top bunk terrifies me and would be massively unfair on the person below with all my nighttime wees.

Conversely I don’t mind sharing a room at a hostel for 4 with one friend. The beds are set up as far apart as they can be on the basis you may not know the other person and I find the school dorm feel very comforting although I have never boarded.

Cheersmedears123 · 09/03/2026 09:23

Agreed! Up until recently we had to share rooms with colleagues on work trips (I once had to share a double bed!!) but a new manager has thankfully put a stop to it.

SpainToday · 09/03/2026 09:23

I'm a private person by nature, and would not wish to share with anyone except DH

Sartre · 09/03/2026 09:23

I’m going to a conference down in Oxford for a few days next month and DH suggested I stay in a hostel to save money! I would rather spoon my eyes out. Cannot imagine anything worse than not only sharing a bathroom with lots of strangers but also a bedroom. Even in a female only dorm I’d be terrified someone would rob me in my sleep. DH thought I was insane but there’s just no way I’d be able to sleep.

Luckyingame · 09/03/2026 09:22

YANBU.
Why would people share/be expected to share hotel rooms is beyond me.
Obviously bar my husband.
I know, expenses and blah blah.
Happy to pay for my own.

Tamtim · 09/03/2026 09:21

Sharing a room with anyone but DH or kids is a big no for me.

SpaceRaccoon · 09/03/2026 09:21

I would never share with anyone except DH, no exceptions, so OP I totally get you!

rookiemere · 09/03/2026 09:21

I quite like a Premier Inn and yes I agree, unless the hotel has some nice features like a spa area and the shared room is a particularly big one, I would rather my own room in a modest hotel
over sharing a posh one. Quite often as well the single mattresses are pushed together so it’s almost like being in the same bed which is a total
hard pass from me.

PrincessPig · 09/03/2026 09:18

StrawberrySquash · 09/03/2026 09:06

It's a personal choice, but I'm pro sharing. Hotel rooms are so expensive for what they are I'm not just going to drop an extra couple of hundred pounds. And it's nice to hang out and chat. Short term only; I'm happy to get home to my own bed and room, but that's an extra pleasure to look forward to!

Thankfully, we are in a premier inn, so it was only £60.

I would rather my own room in a Premier Inn over a shared room somewhere fancier (unless maybe a suite but then we're talking ££££)
