Hate sharing hotel rooms (except with dh)

I am travelling at the minute and ended up leaving the room I was sharing with two female friends last night and paying for my own room. It was the best money I ever spent and I am never sharing a hotel room with anyone other than dh and dcs again.

The issues were a bit of snoring, (which I sometimes do myself tbh, and it wasn't loud so not a big problem), people being messy, leaving worn socks on the table right next to the kettle etc, but the worst thing was one woman having catnaps at dinner time then being awake half the night browsing her phone. Ugh, the light flashing past my face waking me up was so annoying. If you can't sleep, I suppose that's difficult but maybe cut out the pre bedtime snoozes?

Anyway, that is my rant.

Aibu to say that sharing hotel rooms is horrible and to really resent paying for a bad night's sleep?

It's a personal choice, but I'm pro sharing. Hotel rooms are so expensive for what they are I'm not just going to drop an extra couple of hundred pounds. And it's nice to hang out and chat. Short term only; I'm happy to get home to my own bed and room, but that's an extra pleasure to look forward to!

I can hang out and chat and then go to my own room for a sleep. The expense is worth it to me. If I don’t sleep I don’t enjoy anything else, so it’s all a huge waste.

And the thing is, as annoying as snoring is (especially if loud), it is a bodily function and the person isn't doing it on purpose. But taking a nap at 7pm and then scrolling tiktok at 3am is a choice. Jenny wasn't snoring loudly either.

Jenny’s snoring would be way more irritating to me than a phone screen 🤷‍♀️
I never share. Happy to spend the money.

Hopefulsalmon · 12/03/2026 21:13

I never share. I've been single now for ages and don't think I could even bear sharing with a partner now.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 12/03/2026 21:08

I have a couple of good friends that I would share with but I’ve known them for years.

always happy to share with DH, my young adult daughters or my sisters. But I think that’s different.

lots of feels I haven’t known as long I wouldn’t really want to share with if I could avoid it. From the sounds of it your friends are really annoying and it seems fair enough that you have moved out!!

Perhaps Cathy couldn’t sleep because Jenny’s snoring kept her awake. I always have my own room now as my friend’s snoring drove me insane when we shared a hotel room. At least when it’s my husband I can wake him up to tell him/elbow him in the ribs/kick his legs or get up and go sleep on the sofa

Possibly, but Cathy was the one who insisted on sharing in the first place and was huffy as arse when I suggested we get our own rooms. Jenny was not snoring loudly and Cathy saying "Jenny you're snoring" and flashing her phone was (to me) so much more annoying.

I appreciate that's just down to the person in question though and that some people find snoring like torture, but those people would be wise not to insist on sharing a bedroom with two other adults. At least after the first night, you'd think she'd decide sharing wasn't such a great idea, but she was still adamant it was better to be together.

The morning after I got my own room, she came into my new sanctuary room and plopped herself straight into my bed and under my covers as it was cold in my room apparently 😒 😂

I am never sharing with anyone again, least of all Cathy! I am also not telling her my room number again if we are travelling together.

Cripes...I don't even like sharing with my dh!!

"My teenage son refused to share with his sister"

Well of course. You didn't ask them to share a bed, did you?

Nodancingshoes · 10/03/2026 06:06

I quite often go away with friends and we share BUT I don't enjoy that part. Last time my friend complained about my breathing at night, not snoring, breathing....

keepswimming38 · 10/03/2026 05:52

Oh gawd. I’m about to go on holiday abroad with my friend and we are sharing a room. We’ve been away together twice though so think she’s used to me now.

FastFood · 10/03/2026 05:45

I love staying in hotels, it's one of the best things for me, and I never ever ever share.
I could consider sharing with my younger sister for one night, but that's all.

SpidersAreShitheads · 10/03/2026 05:21

Tbh, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for an adult to be on their Kindle or phone at night, provided it’s on mute.

Having to switch your device off at a certain time feels like having a curfew on a school night 😂🫣

But then I don’t think it’s fair get annoyed at someone snoring or if they need to get up in the night for a wee (or even multiple weed like OP!)

If you’re a light sleeper then either take ear plugs and a mask or book your own room. As adults we all have very different sleeping habits and they’re not always compatible - which is often too late once you’re there.

I struggle to sleep (ADHD - hence why I’m awake AND on my phone at 5am 😂🫣) but once I’m asleep very little wakes me up. However hell would freeze over before I shared a room - I can’t relax with anyone other than DP and DC in my personal space.

Glad you got your own room OP - sounds way better for all of you!

Gardenquestion22 · 10/03/2026 04:37

Always shared when younger. Now I don’t unless it’s absolutely unavoidable. I don’t sleep well, I tend to wake early, I snore, I wee in the night a lot and, frankly I like a bit of space!

Two adult couples sharing a room just makes me want to throw up. I just assumed they were super big beds in a twin room!

What this is a thing!? We went to the USA recently and all the rooms we stayed in were like this, but I just thought they had nicer family rooms than here (where the second bed is a crappy sofa bed), although I am baffled why hotels think kids want to share a bed. My teenage son refused to share with his sister so I ended up with her and him with DH.

That only works if you are a good sleeper. If you have a hint of insomnia it's shit.

silentnight000 · 09/03/2026 19:24

No way, I do not share hotel rooms with anyone other than DH or my children.

I’m missing a group weekend away this year because the organiser thought it’d be fun to book somewhere where it’s 2/3 to a room. No thank you I would rather stay at home!!

springawakeningss · 09/03/2026 18:29

I just book my own room

BiscoffCheesecakes · 09/03/2026 18:28

I don't even share with my dd! Last time we shared she accused me of breathing 🤣. If I ever go away with OH it's an Airbnb style accommodation as he stays up later than me

I prefer to go to a cheaper hotel than share to be honest. OTOH I wouldn't be that bothered about a tiny bit of light from a phone or a kindle - you never have complete darkness in cities anyway.

We are all different.

i am happy to share a room with my friends. My sleep doesn’t get disrupted but mostly, we all live a few hours apart so paying for a room each would make it unaffordable to meet more regularly.

I am so glad to read this! I was starting to think I'm a complete weirdo for being happy to share a room with friends. I go on holiday semi often with two different friends, one I've know more than 45 years, the other for more than 30 years. I happily share a twin room with each of them. I wouldn't occur to me or to either of them to suggest separate rooms.

I have been on one and two week holidays with them, which I guess is the length of holiday many people would mainly do with their DH or partner, so perhaps that has meant I've had plenty of time to get completely comfortable with sharing rooms with them? I've also only had my first partner relatively late in life so haven't got used to only or mainly going away with or sharing a room with him.

rookiemere · 09/03/2026 18:04

Further to my comment about US couples sharing rooms, my US cousin told me about a trip to Vegas where there were three friends in one bed to save money and she was in the middle! I can’t imagine anything worse and it’s also slightly bemusing as I think US salaries are better than here and hotel rooms generally not that expensive.

wendywoopywoo222 · 09/03/2026 18:02

I love sharing when I’m away with freinds. Reminds me of trips away when we were young and we usually stay up half the night chatting.

I’m going to a conference down in Oxford for a few days next month and DH suggested I stay in a hostel to save money! I would rather spoon my eyes out. Cannot imagine anything worse than not only sharing a bathroom with lots of strangers but also a bedroom. Even in a female only dorm I’d be terrified someone would rob me in my sleep. DH thought I was insane but there’s just no way I’d be able to sleep.

Also, there are plenty of not-too-expensive hotels in Oxford, or there's AirBnB. No need for a hostel. Ever!

MissCooCooMcgoo · 09/03/2026 17:30

Own room always! I want to have my own space and be able to take a shower and slob about naked watching TV if I want.

Can't do that sharing

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/03/2026 17:25

I don’t share hotel rooms either. Except with the kids, and that not often.

Its the opposite of what being away should be about - it should be relaxing and more restful than being at home.

I mean it’s up to your friend if she enjoys a catnap but she should realise she can’t be up on her phone all night when sharing. She ought to have realised that sharing a room wouldn’t work!
