Hate sharing hotel rooms (except with dh)

I am travelling at the minute and ended up leaving the room I was sharing with two female friends last night and paying for my own room. It was the best money I ever spent and I am never sharing a hotel room with anyone other than dh and dcs again.

The issues were a bit of snoring, (which I sometimes do myself tbh, and it wasn't loud so not a big problem), people being messy, leaving worn socks on the table right next to the kettle etc, but the worst thing was one woman having catnaps at dinner time then being awake half the night browsing her phone. Ugh, the light flashing past my face waking me up was so annoying. If you can't sleep, I suppose that's difficult but maybe cut out the pre bedtime snoozes?

Anyway, that is my rant.

Aibu to say that sharing hotel rooms is horrible and to really resent paying for a bad night's sleep?

I totally agree with you! I'm not a great sleeper at the best of times, but sharing a room makes it even worse. I've got a weekend away with a friend in the summer and I've already said we need to do separate rooms. I like to have a really quiet, dark room at night, but my friend likes a late-night chat, and I tend to wake up early so I don't want to bother her in the morning. I've decided that paying for my own room is the only way forward- if I pay for a shared room then it really is money down the drain as I'll just lie awake frustrated with her habits or worried that mine are annoying her.

I'm not sure why any of thought sharing a premier Inn room would be nice and comfortable.

I don't even share with my DC, we always get adjoining as their just isn't enough space and we all keep each other awake and then are tired and cranky the next day.

I certainly didn't think it would be nice or comfortable. But Cathy was very keen to share, and while I didn't anticipate a luxury experience, I also didn't think it would involve a 40yo woman behaving like a teenager with her 3am tiktok scrolling, grumpily telling off Jenny and making a mess.

Anyway, lesson learnt and never again

Yanbu. I need my space and privacy. I'm happy sharing with dp but no other adults.

I dont want to listen to snoring and farting

I'd rather share with friends than a snoring farting man wanting sex.

Well, that does not sound pleasant either tbf, but I sleep quite happily next to dh. I can 100% see the appeal in having separate bedrooms from dh if we had the space.

I've got a hen party coming up that I'm absolutely dreading for this reason. Not just sharing rooms but most of the party are sharing beds. It's funny because on here people are horrified at even the idea of sharing rooms but when I queried the bed thing on the group whatsapp everyone else was completely fine with it! It's been the same on other hens I've been on too, I've been the weird one for not wanting to share a sofa bed with a total stranger! Usually I'd just say 'thanks but no thanks' but I'd committed before they sprung this on us 🙄 Paying an absolute fortune for the privilege too!

Is Cathy organising the hen? 😄

I was really pressured into sharing and then made to feel like a total weirdo for moving out by Cathy. But I don't care what she (or anyone else I happen to go travelling with) thinks in future. I am not sharing and paying for the privilege when I'm not comfortable. Balls to that. They can call me weird or whatever they want tbh

I have never shared a room unless someone else is paying ( eg the odd bridesmaid the night before the wedding thing). I don't know why grown ups would do this. Obviously I do with DH and did with men I was in a relationship with but not with friends or family since becoming an adult.

I will not be sharing with anyone, (unless forced to, like a major emergency), from now on except my husband and kids.

For anyone who can sleep well in a room with someone random - sleep through snoring, movement and toilet trips for eg - sharing makes sense. I can’t do that so I’d rather either pay the extra or not go. I travel a lot solo anyway, so paying for a whole hotel room isn’t out of the ordinary for me.

MarchWindsAnd · 13/03/2026 00:19

People writing that they wouldn't stay in hostels - some do have private rooms.

I don't mind sharing toilets and showers (with other women), it's just like being at work or the gym. For me it's better than staying in a hotel and sharing a bathroom with DH. It feels more private, too, as there's nobody just outside unable to avoid hearing any 'bathroom' noises.....

I wouldn't share with anyone other than DH, but I have a single friend who often goes on holiday with a female friend (not always the same one) and they share a room. Not doing so would put up the price a lot.

Fingalscave · 12/03/2026 23:47

I hadn't shared with anyone but close family for years until I went away with my cousin for a weekend. We used to go on holiday together when young so I thought it would be fine. She used all the towels, put the tissue box on her bedside table, spent ages in the bathroom so I had to use the toilet at reception and to top it all, balanced her sweaty socks on top of my trousers hanging in the wardrobe. I then stayed overnight in a hotel sharing with a good friend. She snored really loudly and I kept waking up, tossing and turning. I wasn't going to say anything as she wasn't doing it on purpose, but in the morning she complained about my snoring!
Both are still good friends but I will never share with anyone but DH again!

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 12/03/2026 23:27

I’ve only done it once and that was on a three night trip. It was ok, my friend did hog the bathroom but the hotel had a beautiful spa so I used that a lot.
We had one of my most fun nights ever when we stayed in and I had a bed picnic with a bottle of wine each and watched Love Island together. My friend is American and I was explaining all the accents to her. That made up for the bathroom hogging.
We also had room service breakfast on the balcony and again it was such a lovely experience.

As I said, maternity leave is a good model.

MsGreying · 12/03/2026 21:48

I've often wondered whether a room each for me and dh would be a good idea. They do adjoining rooms at one place we stay at. It'd be expensive though.

TheAnswertoaQuestionNobodyAsked · 12/03/2026 21:43

No she went back home. I stayed on over the weekend. Not sure how I managed without her to tell me everything I was doing wrong.

Fatiguedwithlife · 12/03/2026 21:31

I’m the opposite, I’ll share with anyone if it saves a few quid! Went to Marrakech last year with DD1 and we slept in mixed dorms for £10 per night each. The last hostel we were in, the door didn’t even close and the mattress was sagging, lumpy pillows and a weird heavy blanket but I slept like a baby for some reason!

Ugh. I'm still traumatized nu having to share with a colleague on a work trip years ago. We were staying in the nicest hotel in the city but had to.share a room. It was clear even the hotel receptionist found it weird.

She was a bitch to me all day at work and then all evening it was "I hope you're not one of those [my nationality] who needs total privacy in the bathroom." "You're wearing that?!" "Don't use the room phone, it's too expensive!" "TV is for the proletariat." "Hotel shampoo is only good for washing your tights "

When the event was over I moved to a crappy hostel for a couple days on my own and it was bliss.

This sounds horrendous. I'm glad you escaped but annoyed she ended up with a room to herself in the nicest hotel in the city!

I am so glad to read this! I was starting to think I'm a complete weirdo for being happy to share a room with friends. I go on holiday semi often with two different friends, one I've know more than 45 years, the other for more than 30 years. I happily share a twin room with each of them. I wouldn't occur to me or to either of them to suggest separate rooms.

I have been on one and two week holidays with them, which I guess is the length of holiday many people would mainly do with their DH or partner, so perhaps that has meant I've had plenty of time to get completely comfortable with sharing rooms with them? I've also only had my first partner relatively late in life so haven't got used to only or mainly going away with or sharing a room with him.

There are 2 people in the world I’d share with. DD and one friend of 40+ years.

i think sharing a room with a good friend is fun. But then I’m both a good sleeper and happy to make it clear re my rules on keeping the room tidy 😆 Especially would do it if it means we can then afford a nicer hotel by sharing. Also - always have earplugs in your toiletries bag!

Nice hotels confuse me. I’m just sleeping there. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Just clean. I do, however, need to sleep - that’s precarious enough in an unknown room wothout adding another person!s noises - turning over, coughing, snoring…

abracadabra1980 · 12/03/2026 21:22

I went from never sharing a room with friends as I'm a total insomniac, to deciding never to share my home with a husband ever again, either! Best decision ever to rid myself of the emotional intelligence of both of them. My little Labrador snoozing peacefully next to me and my cats purrs are pure autistic bliss.

PrincessPig · 12/03/2026 21:21

Jenny’s snoring would be way more irritating to me than a phone screen 🤷‍♀️
I never share. Happy to spend the money.

Yes, I've just said I know that some people cannot tolerate any snoring at all and that's fine and understandable. I clearly cannot stand people being on their phones when I am sleeping while some people have said they would be fine with it.

Cathy seems to be one of those people who cannot stand snoring and also appears to be nocturnal. So insisting on sharing is nuts at best and a dick move at worst.

You say you hate snoring....and you never share. Exactly. That is the reasonable thing to do! Being someone who seems to not enjoy sleeping at nught and also someone who hates any snoring at all AND insisting we share a room, and getting pissy when I moved out is why I'm a bit miffed with Cathy tbh.

She is my friend but never again

I’m going to a conference down in Oxford for a few days next month and DH suggested I stay in a hostel to save money! I would rather spoon my eyes out. Cannot imagine anything worse than not only sharing a bathroom with lots of strangers but also a bedroom. Even in a female only dorm I’d be terrified someone would rob me in my sleep. DH thought I was insane but there’s just no way I’d be able to sleep.

Some hostels (many, maybe even most) now have separate rooms (en suite) - they’re far more common than shared dorms. I’d imagine Oxford could be quite pricey, so that might be an option esp if your work isn’t paying
