To absolutely loathe the increase in smear campaigns against businesses because of the halal meat debate?

Well it’s not really a debate, is it? You either don’t care, or you’re absolutely seething because your meat may or may not be halal. But irrespectively of what you think about this, AIBU to think that people ‘outing’ businesses on social media about what meat they use and encouraging hundreds of people to smear them not just in posts but reviews to tank their ratings is just crazy?

Hundreds of people commenting ‘I’ve just left them a bad review on google’ because a (British owned baked potato) business extended their trading hours to their Muslim customers? People who have never bought anything from them in their life, probably geographically will never go there. Actively trying to sabotage a business because you think you’re what - some sort of activist?

And don’t get me started on the posts where people reach out to these poor customer service reps in supermarkets to ask them if the meat they sell is halal because of this mad narrative that ‘80% of supermarket meat is halal’ - where has this nonsense come from?!?! 😂 People screenshotting and commenting about how ‘Clare from Lidl’ is avoiding the question when she probably doesn’t have a scooby and the answer probably isn’t a straight yes or no either!

Madness. Utter madness. People treating this like it’s a full time job.

I'm a veggie, but most meat eaters would like stunning ta take place before the slaughter(I know that doesn't always work). To leap to that preference being islamaphobic is a big leap. I've also heard myself that most supermarket meat is halal so "all" can buy it.

Rather defensive. No need for obscenities.

If the only difference was a prayer then why do the slaughter houses have to employ Muslims only (could argue discrimination if the prayer is a pre recording anyway), why does a prayer have to be said, why do the stun methods differ etc. It’s not the same or there wouldn’t need to be exceptions for the method.

Edited

There aren't actually exemptions to the method if it's pre-stunned. Under the regulations, meat is either stunned or not stunned under religious exemption. If stunned (majority of halal meat) it needs to employ one of the methods and meet the same minimum standards of stunning as all other meat.

There are other requirements to be considered halal: that the animal must be capable of regaining consciousness, that it must be slaughtered by a Muslim and that a prayer is recited while slaughter is happening.

Tulipsriver · 09/03/2026 10:21

After reading this thread I've checked the RSPC website and am really shocked. I thought the vast majority of Halal and Kosher meat was stunned in the UK, and that any non stunned meat would be clearly labelled. It looks like 12% of Halal meat and all Kosher meat is killed without being stunned first. That equates to around 26.7 million chickens, 3.1 million sheep, and 35,000 cattle.

I will now be avoiding Halal and Kosher meat as much as possible until it's a legal requirement for non stunned slaughter to be clearly labelled. Not because I'm racist (as I said in my previous post, I have no issue with prayers being said over my food), but because slaughtering an animal whilst conscious isn't something I'm comfortable with.

The OP: this isn't a real issue, i don't care so no-one must care! if people want to complain or find out what they're eating, that is a racist smear campaign of madness

The poll: a rather different story

That is absolute bollocks. Where on earth are you getting your information?! I work for a supermarket. We sell some halal (but no kosher) meat. It is a recoverable stun but the animal has to be unconscious and insensible to pain at the point of death. What that means in practice is that the animal is stunned and then bled within seconds. Which is EXACTLY THE SAME process as all the meat everyone eats. The only difference is that the meat is prayed over - often this is a recording rather than in person.

It’s a reversible stun not irreversible as British standard. This is so the animal is conscious enough to hear the prayer. So it’s not as ‘pain free’ as British standards.

So surely best to label as halal pre-stunned or halal not stunned?

Best of all worlds?

Yes sounds good.

JassyRadlett · 09/03/2026 10:08

EasternStandard · 09/03/2026 10:06

That doesn’t provide enough information. Some people will want to buy halal so put that. And those who don’t want to can choose accordingly.

The Spudbros thing is terrible.

People who object to a business staying open voluntarily to serve Muslim customers ending their fast have to be the lowest of the low.

The fast breaks at 5.55 om, hardly very late!

It's ridiculous to object to a business seeking to cater to the needs of their customers. Isn't that what businesses are supposed to do?!

Meanwhile a Sikh owned restaurant has been vandalised for not selling halal.

There is a bit more to that story than you are making out. This is the restaurant owner. I have sensitive imaged as it is offensive.

This is so daft.

Halal meat is specifically exempt from our welfare laws.

Its perfectly consistent to think animal welfare laws are ( a) adequate or (b) should be higher, whilst also thinking that some animals should not be killed in methods that are lower than the standards required under our UK laws, due to religion based legal exemptions.

Halal meat (and kosher meat) is exempt from the stunning requirement only - not other welfare laws. And most Halal meat is stunned in any case.

If you are satisfied that our existing animal welfare standards are good enough, then you clearly don't care that much about animal welfare. If you do care about animal welfare, then you will care about much more than what happens to them at the moment of their death.

EasternStandard · 09/03/2026 10:06

JassyRadlett · 09/03/2026 09:36

I disagree, given the vast majority of halal meet is stunned before slaughter.

If the question is about consumer choice and clarity in labelling, the correct response would be to label meat as stunned before slaughter/not pre-stunned, which would give consumers accurate information.

Labelling as halal/non-halal does not provide the same clarity.

That doesn’t provide enough information. Some people will want to buy halal so put that. And those who don’t want to can choose accordingly.

My issue is that there is the possibility they could become conscious (vs standard stun) and everything I’ve read states that the stun we use as British standard is haram.

There are three main stun methods, including electrical, allowable.

But fair enough that you're concerned there is a higher chance of them regaining consciousness (no slaughter method is perfectly carried out all the time.)

Twiglets1 · 09/03/2026 07:33

I would like meat to be labelled as Halal or not.

People might assume I would be avoiding Halal meat for racist reasons but it’s not that. I choose meat labelled as free range & pay extra for reasons connected to animal cruelty, nothing to do with race or religion.

I understand some will see that as hypocritical seeing as I’m choosing to eat meat when I could be vegetarian but that’s my stance 🤷🏼‍♀️

I get you. I’m a veggie, but my family eat meat, I cook for them. I won’t buy or cook pork or lamb but I will buy and cook free range chicken. I know it seems a bit mad, all these animals are beautiful, sentient creatures who would prefer not to be eaten, but like you, that’s my stance and what I’m (semi) comfortable with.

Yep. It clearly matters to some consumers, the labelling needs to catch up.

Edited

Absolutely.

MisMonaxo · 09/03/2026 09:49

I'm an atheist who eats meat. I don't care what's halal and what isn't.

Also haven't seen any smear campaigns.

Surely people have better things to worry about?

EasternStandard · 09/03/2026 09:47

ScarlettOYara · 09/03/2026 09:35

This ⬆️. Where I live, it's very clear what meat is halal, it always seems to be labelled, as do restaurants and takeaways which serve it. It's easy to avoid.
We have a very small Jewish community, so there isn't the same amount/availability of kosher meat.
Either way, it's surely easy to check labels?

MightyDandelionEsq · 09/03/2026 09:47

JassyRadlett · 09/03/2026 09:43

I meant you're incorrect that they're semi-conscious, and use a totally different stun method. Apologies for any lack of clarity there.

Personally I think welfare laws should be the same for all slaughter and no religious exemptions exist from requirements to pre-stun meat. But as long as they do, I think we should talk about them accurately.

My issue is that there is the possibility they could become conscious (vs standard stun) and everything I’ve read states that the stun we use as British standard is haram.

JassyRadlett · 09/03/2026 09:46

nnnameccchange · 09/03/2026 09:41

Well I am clearly not going to agree with that, as I want it to be illegal to slaughter any animal without it being stunned first. Therefore labelling is irrelevant.

We agree. I'd also like the 12% or so of halal meat that isn't pre-stunned to be banned, an if not banned then appropriately labelled so I can avoid it.

I am unbothered by prayers being said near the animal during slaughter, so I don't feel the same need to avoid pre-stunned halal meat.

Labelling it as "halal" doesn't provide the clarity to differentiate between the two.
