To buy my first house two minutes down the street from traveller housing initiative?

Please give me advice.
I’m sale agreed on a new build house in Dublin . I found out that there is a new traveller housing initiative going in right across the road from me. Please don’t say I’m being snobby I’m really not. I’ve just heard stories of anti social behaviour etc. I know there’s always some lovely people but I’m nervous.

Do I give the house up because of this? It’s a substantial amount of houses for the traveller scheme all together - six very large detached four bedroom homes. It is two minutes walk from me. I drove up to the development to see and the traveller housing initiative is not in front of me directly as I thought. It is not in front of or behind me but about 2 minutes walk down the road. I can only see gable end of one of the houses from mine. Not directly facing.
I need to sign contacts in 2 days and I am so torn.
Otherwise it’s perfect house for me. With this information are you saying yes or no?

These are not people you want to live anywhere near OP.

I too have experience of these travellers and now am dealing with Roma - where I am a resident in the EU.

They don't want to respect anyone or anything. I would say more about how I feel about them but I would be banned. Ordinarily, I am a pretty much live let live, left leaning person, but my dealings with both travellers and roma has left me feeling nothing but distress and disgust and fear and loathing.

Those calling out others as racist (check the meaning) and bigoted etc, have not had the frightening experience of encountering these people. How they choose to live is on them. How we choose to view them is our right.

I wouldn't want either group anywhere near me or my family.

I call out racism and bigotry where it is abundantly evident.

The racists and bigots make their pitch worse with their weak defence.

Most people capable of critical thought do the same.

Evidence ?

That’s English law which classes them as a race with respect to the equality act. That’s doesn’t actually mean there’s a race of Irish travellers. The hints in the name. They’re Irish or of Irish descent. What the UK has done is bundled all those protected characteristics like ethnicity and race under one umbrella for an act which is quite clear if you read it.

In Ireland, there’s a separate act that protects Irish travellers and they’re recognised as an ethnic minority group not a race by law, distinct from the racial discrimination acts which protect people on the basis of race. And I’m Irish so….

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/oireachtas/travellers-formally-recognised-as-an-ethnic-minority-

Thats not to say they don’t suffer discrimination or harassment akin to racism. But just to point out that they’re technically not a race

The problem is it never seems to be a small minority that are behaving so dreadfully. In my part of England there are a lot of traveller sites, the behaviour is awful and the way they treat their animals is disgusting. My son is an electrical engineer, his company were asked to do an inspection of a very large traveller site nearby. He had to have a police escort the entire time as it was so dangerous to even be there. He said there were dozens of chained up, skinny dogs and the whole place was filthy. My daughter has horses and cringes every time the gypsy kids go flying through our village on their horse and traps, whipping the poor starved horses that are so often lame with missing shoes. It is sad that they get a bad name, but round our way it is easy to see why

Ive seen that with the ponies and traps, going really bloody fast through the centre of Cambridge, a really busy road in the town centre. The poor ponies looked so young and skinny and must have been absolutely terrified with buses whizzing by on the opposite side. The lads driving them couldn't have been more than 12 or 13 and they clearly thought the whole thing was hilarious, thoroughly enjoying the shock and horror on the faces of everyone around.

I'm amazed they were not arrested, but then I guess if they are local the police probably get tired of dealing with the same issues over and over again, so just turn a blind eye.

What a fascinating thread. I’m a gypsy and was recently posting on ama thread a couple of days ago and had tonnes of posters saying “why don’t you’s just move into a house instead of travelling around” and now to see this thread here begging the op not to buy a house because of travellers near by is quite contradictory. Be honest, you would have us all burned by the stake wouldn’t you? Wiped of the face of the earth. This is the reason why so many travellers and gypsy don’t want to settle in houses. Because we are not wanted end of. So we will continue to pull up in your car parks and playing fields and have yous clean up after us. After all it’s what you all deserve.

If you moved into a settled house then provided you just lived a quiet, law abiding, blameless life following the same rules the rest of us have to follow then I imagine most people would welcome you with open arms, actually.

If anyone wants anything 'burned at the stake' it's not individual people or whole ethnic groups of people, it's behaviours. The behaviours are the problem. Taking the view that it's okay to keep behave badly because people hate you anyway is never going to improve community relations, is it?

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 09/03/2026 13:37

What on earth do you mean by 'you must employ them and allow them into schools over there'. ?

Are you implying that traveller children are not allowed into schools in the UK, or are somehow deliberately discouraged from being there?

And as for 'you must employ them' well no-one has to employ anyone purely based on their ethnicity or protected minority status.

Edited to say: sorry, might have quoted the wrong person there!

Edited

Exactly, there is no ‘protection’ like that in Ireland anyway. There is ethnic minor status in place, but that’s not some magical protection for a community where many many members are violent and break the law.

The vast majority of members of the TC don’t work regular jobs, so no one is obliged to hire them for jobs they are not interested in applying for to begin with.

No school in Ireland or the UK is turning traveller children away, so they don’t need protection from that over and above an average citizen anyway. Particularly given the majority of the TC generally pull their children from school after primary school anyway.

Sure, there’s been a few compo cases members of the travelling community have taken and won for being refused entry to bars, hotels etc. But that is not going to change the attitudes here of accepting functions like that, because they are statistically likely to end in fights, antisocial behaviour and damage to property.

Honestly, @Betterbeanon78is making very uneducated statements all over this thread, wrongly accusing people of being racists and bigots, and completely disregarding the awful experiences numerous people on this thread have had. Go find a hobby or something.

Nowpause · 09/03/2026 13:44

Has @Betterbeanon78 actually confirmed whether she is a traveller?

Greysnuggle · 09/03/2026 13:42

I think you’re deluding yourself @Betterbeanon78. Unfortunately there is still much discrimination against the travelling community in Ireland, government measures notwithstanding.
It’s not a small minority of the population who wouldn’t purchase in OP’s situation. There is much work to be done and you are minimising the issues which doesn’t help anyone.

youbizarrehorse · 09/03/2026 13:41

Betterbeanon78 · 09/03/2026 13:23

Actually it was a perfectly legitimate example.

There are multiple black men who rape and assault, much like there are multiple white men. The operative word being "men".

There are multiple travellers who don't commit crime, but the prejudice towards them because some do is bigoted and prejudice (and against the law).

What part of the above is difficult to rationalise. Bigotry is quite simple, despite your attempts to defend it.

Keep digging.

No one is getting tied up in knots. People have simply shared their experiences of living next to members of the TC and what that has been like for them.

You're the one that is throwing around hateful terms like bigot and racist, and you’ve provided exactly zero evidence or justification that any of these comments have been bigoted. None. Zilch.

You seem to think that if you keep calling people bigots, that it will miraculously be true. It doesn’t work like that.

Form an intelligent argument and do better.

What even is your connection to Ireland or the TC by the way? What skin have you got in this discussion?

You might want to read this thread more carefully. A lot of posters are Irish or are living in Ireland.

Most in the racist UK perhaps, and a few bigoted people in Ireland.

are you British @Betterbeanon78 ?

I am quite energetic thanks.

Must be tiring trawling through other threads to deflect away from the topic at hand...i.e. bigotry.

It’s all in the last day. Three threads… every single post angry and arguing. What a way to live!

Betterbeanon78 · 09/03/2026 13:34

True, but with enforceable consequences similar to that of racial hate incidents.

Unless of course, the civil courts are in the wrong are they? When they awarded travellers compensation for being refused entry.

NotTerfNorCis · 09/03/2026 13:29

Not pointing fingers, but some people get their fun that way. Find a juicy subject where people feel strongly, take the position you know most won't agree with, and off you go - hours of entertainment!

Betterbeanon78 · 09/03/2026 13:31

Greysnuggle · 09/03/2026 13:27

There is no government protection that requires someone like OP purchase a house that she’s unsure about.

Are you in Ireland @Betterbeanon78?

Where did you deduce that from? People can do what they like.

I said the law protects the TC in Ireland from bigotry and discrimination (enforced robustly at that).

But if you want to publically air your views over there towards the TC, you better be prepared for the legal consequences.

I am with the law on this one. Most intelligent people are.

puffyisgood · 09/03/2026 13:30

Very hard no from me.

Greysnuggle · 09/03/2026 13:30

Betterbeanon78 · 09/03/2026 13:14

Which reinforces the point that it is naive at best to form the view it is due to their ethnic group status.

People from the non TC also vary in behaviour.

Yes, it’s a matter of risk analysis though.

Travellers aren’t a race FYI. They’re an ethnic community

Greysnuggle · 09/03/2026 13:27

Betterbeanon78 · 09/03/2026 13:08

Actually it doesn't. Maybe in the UK it says a lot, but not in Ireland, where more protection is implemented.

Do you usually base a overall view based on minority bigot posts?

They are usually the same morons who have similar views on people who are in other underrepresented groups.
