Are you worried about conscription… *trigger warning - discusses risks of war**

I don’t know why, but I feel like a huge penny has dropped for me today, on the risks we all face in such uncertain times. I have thought about my nephews, who are 17 and 16. If WW3 happens, they would be at risk of conscription I would imagine, as they turn 18. This has petrified me. They are still babies to me (although I know they are older and wiser than I give them credit for). My husband is a soldier, so I am aware of the risks he faces. Of course I am worried for him too. But I’m just worried for us all. I am worried for our children. Where will they go? Will it be like old war times when they were evacuated? Will my brothers be conscripted? Will females also be put on the front lines? And ultimately, will we survive this.

I know this is scary, and I’m hoping my anxiety (previously diagnosed) is getting the better of me here. But it doesn’t feel like anxiety. It feels like real fear and a real threat.

“I’ve been sitting in private committee briefings with senior officials, and they say there’s a good chance we’ll be in a war before the next election. I think that’s right, that’s my view,” Mike Martin, the Liberal Democrat MP for Tunbridge Wells, elected to parliament in the 2024 election, tells me. “There’s certainly more than a 50% chance we’ll be involved in a war before 2030.”

. Martin is a former British Army officer who served multiple tours of Afghanistan, picked up a PhD in war studies and has authored books including 2023’s How to Fight a War.

It’ll all be professional soldiers and drones though, you might think. A modern war for modern times. “Obviously if we got into a big war, we’d have conscription straight away,” says Martin.

The Ukraine war has shown how, despite all the high-tech advances, modern wars still involve soldiers digging trenches like they did in the First World War.

“Would we need to conscript? Yeah, we would. Because ultimately, we’re not at a stage yet where you can replace people with drones,” says Martin. “We’re a long way off from that. Drones are fine, as far as they go, but you still need people to occupy villages, hold ground, and all the rest of it. And that’s not going to change for quite some time.”

“Despite the fact that we are in a really precarious international situation, the government has no desire to talk about defense and security, because if they acknowledge the pretty parlous state of the British military, they open up another front of more people arguing for more spending, so they make their lives difficult.”

I don't necessarily agree with all of these but pp's posts about drones being adequate to fight are not realistic.

UK will be at war by next election, says ex-Army Lib Dem MP

Soldier turned MP Mike Martin predicts government will have to find almost £20bn a year for defence, and says a war by 2030 is on the cards.

Im sure there are plans in place for conscription if things escalate significantly. The government drew up plans for conscription during the Falklands conflict, although I realise the world was very different then.

My dyslexic brain read that as are you worried about constipation, then I saw war, then I thought oh no I’ll be trapped under my kitchen table after a nuclear bomb eating dog food unable to crap (Children of the Dust anyone?)

I think wars are so remote and hi tech these days it’s not like thousands of people are needed on the ground and there aren’t tens of spare jets waiting for pilots. So no, I’m not worried about conscription. “Everyone” is generally only useful in war when you need extra cannon fodder.

Wars aren't simply remote and hi tech. Ukraine war has boots on the ground. Drones can't solve all the problems.

I'm old. It's always been like this. Stop worrying, it'll all fizzle out.Flowers

Well...covid happened, sometimes things do happen. WW2 happened, it's not accurate to say war wouldn't happen just bc stuff like the Cold War fizzled out.

I agree that OP should not get into a panic though.

Itsmetheflamingo · 08/03/2026 22:28

I’m not- wars are fought with technology now, and it’s certainly a great distance to Iran so I can’t see the need for physical presence of huge numbers of British adults?!

what are you envisioning they're to be used for?

Wars now can't just be fought with drones. Ukraine still has boots on the ground.

hcee19 · 09/03/2026 01:17

Equal opportunities, should apply to both male and female, cannot cherry pick. We are living in uncertain times, but there isn't anything we can really do about it..l think the media likes nothing better to stir up panic amongst us, talking about conscription...no one else is ..

"It’s naive to think WW3 won’t happen; the US military is literally a death cult that believes they have to start WW3 to bring Jesus back and are doing their utmost to bring the Revelations chapter of the Bible to life."

Maybe it is - but ww3 won't happen due to the Iran us/ Israeli war.

And it's a bit ridiculous to say people are naive because trump and the us military are "literally" doing this to resurrect jesus 😂

if usa gave control of the military or put it to a vote of who to go to war with the general public would be alot more war willing than trump himself

I’m surprised they do it at all in Germany, having had basically next to no military investment until very recently as restitution and reconciliation for ww2

I don’t believe children will be evacuated. Taking children from their parents and housing them with strangers simply wouldn’t happen these days

I don't think this will happen to children but maybe 1- 2 years between 16-25 people have to complete it. Alot of countries do this to some degree either though mandatory or ballot.

Lifesd · 09/03/2026 00:56

I’m genuinely not sure that society of today has the resilience or fortitude to fight a war - particularly given the staggering number of NEETs in the UK.

Who is going to invade us?

i said hypothetically.
Im aware no one is planning to invade us

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/03/2026 00:48

Shushhh · 08/03/2026 22:36

To the posters saying a war would be very different. Do you think the U.K. would be hit by these drone attacks? Do you think children would be moved to less populated areas for their protection?

Edited

No point. There was enough trouble from parents who decided they weren't going to do it last time. Add in social media and it would be an absolute waste of time, money and manpower to bother.

Onmytod24 · 09/03/2026 00:47

You’ve got a problem with anxiety why don’t you use the strategies you’ve been taught. The way you’re writing in your posts it seems like you just want the rest of us to feel the way you do. Most of us don’t.

Fiction. Zombies and Vampires aren't real either.

Fetaface · 09/03/2026 00:38

Nah the flag shaggers have offered to fight. They want to 'protect women and girls' and throw bricks at ppl from other countries and fire bomb their buildings so let them crack on.

ThatPearlkitty · 09/03/2026 00:37

JustCabbaggeLooking · 09/03/2026 00:35

From your catastrophic phrasing.

ah i see,

how did you get zombies ?

Ah! I see! It's a zombie apocalypse war we're fighting. Now it makes sense.

how did you get zombies ?

JustCabbaggeLooking · 09/03/2026 00:33

ThatPearlkitty · 09/03/2026 00:29

personally you could have troops fall back from any cities where they choose not to fight etc

Bikenutz · 09/03/2026 00:32

Conscription seems unlikely. They always try for volunteers first, and some people are willing.

JustCabbaggeLooking · 09/03/2026 00:29

misssunshine4040 · 09/03/2026 00:27

But what happens if we are invaded? No one would fight for the government, you would fight for your home and family and loved ones.

Who is going to invade us?

Don't tell them your name, Pike!
