To think supernanny doesn’t need a come back

I’ve noticed that Jo Frost is on a bit of a PR wave at the moment. AIBU to think her brand of ‘parenting’ advice can stay in the 00s.

I’ve always found the idea of parenting experts without children somewhat suspect. To me it’s very different than being a teacher or working with children generally which I don’t think you need to be a parent to do well.

I don’t enjoy her lectures/rants about things I suspect she has very little knowledge of.

I also find it really morally questionable putting struggling kids on TV - immortalised in their hardest moment forever.

She did it with two or three year olds. Do you really punish them, they are babies.

2 and 3 year olds are most definitely not babies!
You very nicely illustrate what is wrong with parenting! Raise your game and have higher expectations of your children!

Wow, this incredibly short sighted and shows a real lack of understanding of ASD and ADHD

My entire family including are high functioning Nd, including my two children who are thriving with correct and consistent support in place for them. I have extremely good reputation for dealing with behaviour issues and Sen- I'm the teacher that parents come to leadership to request because, frankly. I am that good. I'm also a qualified senco and my undergrad in child development is first class. I am only commenting on what I have observed. In the past ten years an observable change has occured (and is now being documented and researched fyi) based on parenting attitudes which has negatively impacted on children's behaviour and resilience alongside increasing reliance on technology (spoiler alert- it doesn't actually help regulate but works as a crutch, which overtime rewires the brain to rely on constant stimulation, increasing all behavioural issues). But no... Apparently I dOn'T kNoW AnYtHiNg. It doesn't matter though because ultimately people who throw this sort of comment out there are usually trying to justify why things aren't going so well in their own families, even though often it is very painfully obvious when we have to have these parents in for meetings and are offering all kinds of support packages to assist. Also before the other classic comeback is used... No. I won't waste any more of my precious time convincing you of sources. There is widely published evidence all over the internet for those who care to look to support what I have said, which I suspect you probably aren't. Lol. Even Ockwell Smith who started the whole gentle parenting movement is backtracking/making statements because what she intended and what has been implemented by parents based on misconceptions has created so many widespread issues in families and children. Unfollow thread and mike drop.

I grew up watching Supernanny and I will be raising my own children using her techniques

Erm she doesn't have a speech impediment, she just pronounces that word weirdly.

Actually she does have a speech impediment and has had years of speech therapy to get to how she talks today. Some of the words and sounds she just hasn't been able to master!

Not reallt related to her parenting advice but more the tv aspect, I've started thinking more recently about kids in the media (not necessarily famous people's kids, but influencers kids or kids on these kind of programmes). I think there needs to be more laws in place tbh. It blows my mind that they need twins for making films because it's deemed too much for a single child, and under 14s can't get a job really nowadays plus theres so many hoops for saturday jobs, but supernanny and the team can film 24/7 and blast a child's worst moments onto national tv, and the child gets no financial recompense or breaks from filming. It's awful. I did a kind of similar show (house hunting not parenting) as a couple and it was EXHAUSTING, we filmed every single scene maybe 3 times, it was long long days (probably 5 of them in total) for a 1 hour show and all we were doing really was walking into a house and going "ooh yeah, nice kitchen". I didn't have to reveal anything personal at all. I also found a clip of it on You Tube when I was showing a friend and saw a woman had commented "this house hunter always looks at the host like she hates her, I wonder which one is the nasty one". I felt awful, and again, this was a really light minor show.

I also do wonder about influencers kids in the same way, especially ones that cash in on "family" content. Sometimes I wonder, are they making that child do things over and over to get the best shot/angle/content etc. How come that's not seen as a child "working", where's the child's money given they're the star of the show. I think it all needs looking at a bit really. I just don't think kinds under 16 should be exposed on tv/the Internet- it lasts forever and they can't really consent to that at their age, plus they don't ever seem to benefit either.

The only issue I have is the kids being broadcast like that, it's something I personally disagree with but YouTube seems to be full of parents posting videos of their kids. Not to mention other apps. Until we make it 'unasseptable' to have children on media altogether, I don't think it makes a difference whether it's TV or SM.

Her methods may be outdated but says who, it's constantly talked about that children behave worse now than they ever did. She set boundaries and most importantly she empowered parents to take control.

I think her not being a parent herself is of no relevance, it can actually make her more objective and professional. So many parents think their tiny experience with 1 or 2 children makes them experts on others.

This!

Tbf. I would prefer her brand of parenting over tik tok gentle parenting that's actually just permissive parenting any day. As a teacher over the past ten years I have seen behaviour standards declining sharply and accountability go out of the window. Both my children are diagnosed ADHD with autistic traits. Do they have behavioural issues. No. Do they have acedemic problems. No. They are exceeding their age expectations. Because they are parented. They will grow up learning strategies to channel excess energy and social skills just the same as me and my husband learnt to. We have a generation of children though who imo are in no way ready to enter the work place and wider society though. I'm hearing that employers are struggling with the zoomers. Just wait for the alphas. I've taught both generations. While I hasten to say this is not all- there are many parents who work hard to ensure their children are decent hard working individuals with social soft skills that will serve them in the future... Many honestly lack any sort of resilience or discipline of character. Not all. But many.

Everything you said Op. Much of her approach is outdated and not based on attachment theory, or any known best practice in infant or child mental health.

Important point too about making ‘good tv’ out of kids (and parents) who are struggling and vulnerable. It’s a bit Jeremy Kyle which also can get in the bin.

I like her and do think some of what she says has value, at least as far as consistency and boundaries go. But the idea of time out is kind of outdated now. The thinking now is more that children who are showing distressed and dysregulated behaviours need connection not alienation. Her approach probably also doesn’t work for many ND kids.

Do you not believe people can change and move with the times?

Yes

But her opinions she often publicly airs, her stance on parenting and that she has never acknowledged her poor behaviour and the negative impact it had shows that she hasn't

Bullies rarely do change. The production of her tv shows most likely have due to wanting to appeal to viewers in 2026, I am sure it won't be long until something sensational to attract viewers will air

faerylights · 10/03/2026 13:48

HRTQueen · 10/03/2026 13:41

I am critical of Jo Frost, her stance on parenting ....

There are many people I can form an opinion on based on past behaviour on their shows, interviews they have given and ongoing opinions that they publicly make without seeing a highly produced show to form that opinion

@HRTQueen you're basing your assumptions on a show that aired over 20 years ago and a few interviews - her new programme is absolutely NOTHING like the original version.

Like I said, if you’re going to criticise something, at least watch it first.

It just makes you look rather silly to sneer and judge a programme you’ve never actually seen, that’s all.

I am judging the person who has continually shown her true colours and not shown an ounce of self reflection

For tv executives the show pulled in high viewing numbers and they hope to repeat that again and we all know how desperate tv executives are now to get higher ratings.

More people are speaking out about this form of TV and her stance, we have seen what she does, we are aware of her stance and we do not agree bullying and humiliation (which she has never been sorry for) should be made again.

If you like that form of entertainment go ahead and watch it

faerylights · 10/03/2026 08:42

HRTQueen · 10/03/2026 08:01

i read her gloating and self grandiose interview a while back no signs of self reflection so why would I watch to add to her viewing figures

Shane tv producers prefer to stick with tried and tested so called experts than people who are genuine and have a deeper understanding of human behaviour in their approach

Megan is one I remember who came across as PDA to me. But the thing is, her mum spoke to her in this aggressive, growly voice and you can totally see where she got that from. Kids mirror their parents.

YANBU, her views are very outdated and harmful

I remember her reprimanding a woman and toddler because he found comfort through breastfeeding. The WHO recommend breastfeeding until at least 2 and beyond IIRC and the benefits are enormous, and Jo behaved like it was something wrong and perverse, spoiling a child rather than them just having their natural comfort. She stood over them as he fed being a right twat to them both.
I also think her methods are shite and looking back there were so many ND kids who were exploited unashamedly.

I follow Megan on social media, she’s a mum herself now and speaks about her experience on the show as a child. She also lost her own mum to cancer recently

Couldn't agree more!
Sorry to hear about Megan....😔

Like people who signed themselves up to Jeremy Kyle, they were often vulnerable in various ways. Yes they volunteered themselves but was it really informed consent? I doubt it and the children certainly couldnt consent.

I am advocating one approach over another, yes. Time outs and the like aren’t promoted by infant mental health professionals. But yes agree with you that empowering parents to understand they need to be in charge and how children actually want and need this, is a timeless message. Also totally agree parents do the best they can, and when struggling will follow the most easily available advice. I’d rather it wasn’t hers.

Tbh, children don't get to consent to much in their lives.

Decisions of enormous importance are made on their behalf all the time, by parents and by schools.

I do have an issue with allowing your child to go on TV, especially when they're going to be portrayed as poster children for dysfunction and disregulation. I have a problem with parents parading their children all over their SM too.

Reality TV and even the internet as we now know it was in its childhood when the show was taped and I suspect very few people had any inkling of the way the snapshot of their lives would remain available for as long as technology allows it. I don't think it was cynical of the show's producers to put families in that position either - nobody has a crystal ball.
