I'm always pleased when I find I've done too much boiled potato, it means I can have the leftovers fried tomorrow.

Seeingadistance · 06/03/2026 22:37

Macaroons - mix up mashed potato with icing sugar, roll into balls and cover with toasted coconut!

AloAloo · 06/03/2026 22:36

I was in my late 40s before I encountered egg and chips. The combination was extraordinary. Rosemary fries dipped into a golden yolk. Religious experience.

I love mash with plenty of cheese and onions, into the oven until bubbling and crispy.

murasaki · 06/03/2026 22:33

A bit of garlic from a tube goes well in mash....

HelenaWilson · 06/03/2026 22:33

I was out somewhere once on a miserable cold day. Went into a BHS restaurant (RIP) and had a jacket potato. Warmed me all through. It was like having a little radiator inside me.

Baked, chips, roast, love them all. Hash browns and a fried egg.

Potato with skin on, cheese or egg, cheap and filling and nutritious meal.

Honestly, I think I could just eat a huge bowl of mash from dinner each night and be happy. I might mix it up and have a huge bowl of roast potatoes on some days for a bit of variety.

Oh me too! I always cook extra. Love it with butter and cheese!

Parrlorwarrior · 06/03/2026 22:32

Something I tried last week with some left over mash, add some sr flour until you have a dough, roll it out and cut it into individual cakes. Then bake at 180c until golden. Spread with butter. Bloody lovely.

AloAloo · 06/03/2026 22:32

Patatas Bravas.

We love the Spaniards too.

murasaki · 06/03/2026 22:29

Sag aloo is up there with my favourites.

Parrlorwarrior · 06/03/2026 22:29

I’m in. I’m a massive potato fan, baked, roast, chipped, mashed, dauphinois, new potatoes potato fondant, just bring it on. You can keep your rice and pasta.

AloAloo · 06/03/2026 22:27

Indians, like the Irish, also excel at potato dishes. It must be something to do with being colonised by rapacious Brits in the 18th and 19th centuries.

I particularly enjoy the Indian devotion to double carbs. I can demolish rice and aloo gobi, or chapati and aloo bhujia. Samosas. Aloo parata. Sag aloo.

Brainstorm23 · 06/03/2026 22:27

Honestly i hate potatoes. I'm from NI and I honestly had potatoes for pretty much every dinner til I left home. It was plain boiled potatoes too. Not even anything nice! I'd had my fill of them for life and rarely eat them.

marmitegirl01 · 06/03/2026 22:27

Whoever recommended Poppy cooks Thankyou 🙏 the first video I watched she cooked roasties in clotted cream. Oh my 😍

Your stomach thinks all potato is mashed.

Luckily I neither taste nor think with my stomach.

OK, I sometimes think with my stomach.

My Dad used to say that you could live on potatoes alone. I don’t think he was right, but they are great TBF.

murasaki · 06/03/2026 22:20

Give me your most nostalgic potato experience, potatoes that have a time and place in your heart.

My grandad, born in 1904, was a very independent man, whose wife died when my mum was 20, way before I was born. His house had no central heating a massive coal fire, and was, let's face it, grubby. He had a huge garden, that was basically a massive allotment, 2 kinds of plum trees, cherry tree, all kinds of berries, all veg, beautifully tended, into his 90s.

I can never eat boiled potatoes, as none have ever tasted as good as his, straight from the garden, salt and butter. No shop potato has ever hit the mark, so I just don't. My mum and sisters all agree.

30 odd years ago when we had a big mortgage, I had given up work because of a sickly baby and DH was early career and the fees weren't coming in, I had £20 to last for five days. Two nights dinners were: layer of sliced potatoes, layer of sliced onion, a few bits of chopped ham, black pepper, bit of garlic, and repeat to within an ich of the top of the dish. Pour over about 3/4pint cheese sauce. Serve with cabbage and carrots. Two more nights were pasta with tomato sauce (home made), with a bit of cheddar; and macaroni cheese.

On day six, DH rang to say three big cheques had come in and could I please get some meat :).

I showed this to an Irish friend yesterday and she lost it at “atheists explain this”

worcesterpear · 06/03/2026 22:18

I love jacket potatoes! Mostly with cold toppings like tuna mayo or longley farm cottage cheese and pineapple, but occasionally with home made chilli.
Not forgetting, spanish omelettes, roast potatoes, and mash with sausages and yorkshires.

CatamaranViper · 06/03/2026 22:15

The miracle food!
In winter, roast them, mash them, puree them...
In summer, salad them, boil them... Roast them (roasties for the win).

Every other season...roast them?

I want to eat these very expensive posh potatoes - one after another - as a tasting menu 😂https://e0a09631-8441-4d02-b2f0-f4b1b4de3adc.filesusr.com/ugd/099a59_2cd8ee4431d246f28878f42538450742.pdf

I wondered what this was until I scrolled down far enough to find the potatoes and O.M.G. I would absolutely be with you there for the potato tasting menu.

CoastalCalm · 06/03/2026 22:15

Best thing about summer is boiled new potatoes with salad cream , butter and crunchy Maldon on repeat (and other seasons too)
