Can't stand this attitude re prison attacks

After the murder of Ian Watkins and the assault and (very possible) death of Ian Huntley, social media and news articles have been flooded with comments such as 'Give that man a medal!!' 'Not all heroes wear capes!!'.
These people seem to forget that the killers are in prison for as equally heinous and despicable crimes as the aforementioned two. They have also most probably not attacked them over what they did, but over debts, drugs or just to gain some notoriety.

I am fed up of hearing comments like this.

I dont think love cuts off so easily and I think it must be very possible to still love your family member while hating what they did and being relieved they are in prison. I know nothing about him really, but saw a picture of a woman who I felt sorry for.

I hope I'm never in a situation to find out for certain but I can't imagine being able to love a murderer or rapist even if I was related to them. I would also cut off any friend or family member who supported them in any way.

I’m not congratulating those who have killed Ian Watkins and left Ian Huntley for dead but I’m glad they felt at least an ounce of fear as they are being attacked. Same with Wayne Cousins now saying he is living in fear that he will be next. All I can think is good if that makes me a bad person or apparently someone who can’t have more than one thought in my head then so be it.

Also i have not give their families a single thought those go to their poor innocent victims and their families.

Edited

No I don’t particularly care about the families of psychopaths in prison, I never mentioned them at all. (I never actually thought about them.) I was only thinking about the victims’ families, who would probably be happier if their loved ones’ killers weren’t in the news at all.

It would be better if Huntley were to die quickly now, so he wouldn’t be in the news again. (I remember a family member of one of Peter Sutcliffe saying this very thing after he died.)

As a victim of CSA myself, I don’t really want to give a thought to paedophiles suffering fear like I did. I don’t want to give them this kind of headspace. As long as they’re safely in prison and not in a position to hurt another child again, unlike far too many others who haven’t even been caught.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 06/03/2026 20:35

I don't think the man who attacked Huntley deserves a medal or any praise as he's also a monster
However I couldn't care less if Huntley dies or that Watkins was killed. They are both a waste of oxygen.

Bigwelshlamb · 06/03/2026 20:06

I speak as a woman whose child was attacked by a young man now serving five life sentences in addition to seven other sentences. These sentences are all served concurrently and he could be put by the time he is in his early forties... He will remain on the SO Reg for life but he was on it when he did what he did to her. I do not believe in the death sentence but I would like him to stay in prison all his life because he is dangerous but apparently doesn't have any illness that can be treated. My daughter will be in her early forties at this time, will have children I hope and she has to live with that. There is an order banning him from contact forever but he will come out one day. If someone dropped him the day before he was due to be released I would be happy but otherwise I would be happy for him to be incarcerated forever. Killing Huntley is a pointless thing because he was there for life but I suppose it is kudos for a prisoner who has nothing to lose. So I have mixed feelings about this. Yes prisoners should be safe as should guards and I have an opinion about these things which I entirely abandon when it comes to my daughter's attacker. Personally, I think death is an easy way out for someone who should have sat in what he's done forever. Bur if someone killed my daughter's attacker I would be relieved.

A few years back through my work I came across a case of a man who was in prison for raping and murdering a young child. He served 15 years and then the real perpetrator was found. The man in prison was innocent.

That's just one example. There will be more. It's why I dont support the death penalty and one of the reasons I dont condone prison attacks (the other reason being staff safety).

Sure we all know Watkins and Huntley were guilty and I won't be shedding any tears for them. But we shouldnt be encouraging/applauding this kind of behaviour.

The man who attacked Huntley raped and murdered a pregnant woman (along with killing 2 others). He is just as much of a "monster". I read an interview with Huntleys daughter where she said she wanted to shake the man's hand and it sickened me. Because he will be loving that and how does it make his victims families feel? They must feel sick at all the attention he's getting.

There's a hierarchy in prisons and paedophiles are at the bottom of the heap.

No sympathy for Watkins and Huntley, but you cannot have mob justice in prisons.

Netcurtainnelly · 06/03/2026 19:54

Dollymylove · 06/03/2026 19:50

They know very well that the attackers are not going to be released. Its just a reaction to the fact that some nasty scrote has been attacked or killed, and people sre happy about it, even if the attacker is also a nasty scrote.
People are just happy that Huntley probably wont make it. Don't read anything else into it

Some people are equally unhappy, they want him to survive to be beaten again. It's a mixture of views.

Yes she killed herself and he had a heart attack.

If the prisoners are not safe then the staff are not either.

This isn't something that MN users can solve. It's up to the prison service to work all this out and the government.
Alot of the older more experienced prison officers have left.
Prisons are short staffed. Alot of younger staff are in now.
There are problems, but out of our hands to solve.
You'll never stop prison violence. It's a hostile place, and nobody wants to be there. They all stupidly thought they could get away with what they did.
You have got all the dregs if society all together as well.

Hats off to anyone who does work there. Must be one of the most depressing jobs out, working with the worst in society every day .

Netcurtainnelly · 06/03/2026 19:42

It cuts off for some but not for others.
Remember the disgusting pair who killed Daniel Pelka.
They both died in prison. None of their relatives came forward to claim their bodies or possessions when they died.
They weren't interested. Some things are just too disgusting.

Ziggedy · 06/03/2026 19:50

@sprigatito Yes cannot bear these ‘dim’ types. Thank goodness for people like yourself and the paternalistic policies the government enforces on these thickets to keep them in line.…oh how there is nothing less palatable than a sanctimonious liberal denouncing the views of those who should know better than to believe the podium is available for anyone other than those spouting liberal rhetoric!

Maybe you should spend less time proselytising, and insulting those deemed lesser than your educated self. People like you don’t seem to be able to grasp that there are those in society that exist in the grey - not dim and ‘bloodthirsty’ but hold views which don’t align with yours. Let that thought sink in and terrify you.

FWIW couldn’t give a damn what happens to the heinous Huntley.

How do you feel about the possibile life long trauma witnessing the attack/the injuries could have caused in the Staff? Or the prisoners in for a lot less? That iron bar could have been easily used on any staff member, that can spark anxiety.

I’m not saying it’s ok, but I’m also saying I couldn’t be upset that it’s happened to him! I feel for the innocent people.

MyTrivia · 06/03/2026 19:33

I honestly can’t say I care. Or at least, there are things I care about much more than these monsters. If you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

The two of those men are pure EVIL. Two wrongs don’t make a right but I can’t summon the will to think the world would be better with them in it.

Not sure on that but would hope so.

I also feel for his and Watkins mothers, they have to live with this every day.

Tbf even his mother had a small.part of her that hopes he doesn't make it.

Personally I don't want these people to die, they should live through it. But I won't be upset if they do.

Despite their crimes prisoners also deserve to be safe. It's concerning to think how easily this can happen in prisons, imagine it was your relative who was inside.

If they’d done what he had, I wouldn’t care!

My thought is how horrible this must be for Holly and Jessica's parents, having his name dragged all through the news again.

Itsmetheflamingo · 06/03/2026 19:26

Totally OP. It’s like people think there are good prisoners and bad prisoners whereas in reality they’re all there for the same reasons
