Can't stand this attitude re prison attacks

After the murder of Ian Watkins and the assault and (very possible) death of Ian Huntley, social media and news articles have been flooded with comments such as 'Give that man a medal!!' 'Not all heroes wear capes!!'.
These people seem to forget that the killers are in prison for as equally heinous and despicable crimes as the aforementioned two. They have also most probably not attacked them over what they did, but over debts, drugs or just to gain some notoriety.

I am fed up of hearing comments like this.

The only people you should actually feel sorry for is the FOS PO and/or the teacher who actually had to witness that level of violence. They were in a manufacturing workshop when it happened, so they will have had a supervising teacher/instructor (who could be as young as 21 and female). I feel really sorry for the person who had to witness that mess, then write about it and sit in a meeting with the Governor and explain why they (and the floor officer) weren’t able to predict/stop the attack, and go straight back to work the next day in the same place.
That’s who I feel sorry for in this whole mess.

YANBU
I think some people are also blind to the fact that if prisoners can do this to each other, they can also do it to staff. There is nothing to celebrate about any of this.

Exactly, it is the beginning of the end of a civilised society which is dangerous for everyone, including staff as you say and the wrongly convicted innocent prisoners like the man recently released after 17 years charged with a vicious attack rape and serious injury after new DNA evidence proved it was someone else.

OonaStubbs · 07/03/2026 01:11

I don't think the attackers are heroes or anything of the sort but I am happy that a horrendous criminal is dead. I couldn't give a toss about the safety of prisoners. If every prisoner killed another prisoner there'd be no more prisoners, which would solve the prison overcrowding problem in one fell swoop, then we could start filling up prisons again with more criminals, which would drastically reduce crime.

The onus should be on the right of law-abiding people not to be the victims of crime. Criminal rights should not be a priority at all.

Do you honestly think murderers and rapists deserve to be safe?? Their victims weren’t. I don’t really understand that viewpoint. They couldn’t live in a civilised society. I hope they live in fear of their lives tbh, isn’t that part of the punishment? If they live carefree in prison then prison is not really serving its purpose.

In that case, why are so many people against capital punishment? If you're not, fair enough, then that doesn't apply, but the question is really for everyone-and most people on here are generally against it. What is the point of abolishing the death penalty if we don't think prisons should be safe and humane.
Also, some people imprisoned for serious crimes are later found to be innocent. I'm not talking about Huntley, but about those who are innocent, who are also at risk when prisons aren't safe.

No one has a cushy life in prison FFS.

They do actually - especially paedophiles who are usually model prisoners and often kept separate from other prisoners due to the risk of violence against them.

How do you know they are?
Get a grip.

Mothers and fathers have a huge bearing on how their offspring turn out.

How do you know they're not partly responsible for how their sons turned out?

Oh how could we forget, a woman always has to be to blame for a violent evil man.

TheKittenswithMittens · 07/03/2026 00:07

Supposedly we live in a civilised society. Ages ago, we decided that we wouldn't have the death penalty, replacing it with life in imprisonment. Nothing we do to murderers will bring their victims back. I doubt that they should live in fear, nor do I think they should have luxury.

Why are so many keen to reoffend and go back to prison then?

For some prisoners life inside is better than life outside.

I also feel for his and Watkins mothers, they have to live with this every day.

No, living in fear is not the punishment. Losing your freedom is the punishment.

If we regard living in fear as an appropriate part of the punishment, then it will extend to people who are unjustly convicted; prisoners on remand; people convicted of nonviolent crimes; not to mention all the prison staff.

It's not so much 'do murderers and rapists deserve to be safe?' as 'do murderers and rapists (for most serious attackers of other prisoners come into such categories) have the right to continue committing violent crimes in prison/' And I definitely think that the answer is NO.

They are all in a prison where they all are in there for awful crimes.
Still does not make it right for any of them to be attacked.
If they can be attacked, then staff can be attacked.
Their punishment is the deprivation of liberty.

I didn't say it was right in my replies.

JustAnotherWhinger · 06/03/2026 23:28

I found it bizarre that people hadn’t thought for a second about who’d they’d be celebrating in their “buy the man who did it a pint” and the “man who did it should be released on the basis of his community service”.

i mean, it was never going to be someone in prison for not paying their council tax that was mixing with Huntley.

Too quick trying to be the first to post online than taking a second to think about the type of person they were celebrating.

Eww no. He murdered a pregnant woman so I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't a target himself.

Oh I don't think anyone would disagree with you there.
I think the point of the OP was that people were saying that the man who attacked Huntley is a hero etc. He is a criminal just as bad as Huntley, and his name in the press with all the comments about how he is a hero and all the GoFundMe shit to give him money etc... how would that feel for the family of his victims?

Jesus, have people really started a GFM for a convicted rapist and triple murderer?

XenoBitch · 06/03/2026 22:40

Astrabees · 06/03/2026 22:36

The perpetrators of the violent assaults and murders in this type of case are those who will never get out, either because they have whole life sentences or have no prospect of parole. There is no deterrent to stop them murdering other prisoners or prison staff.

There is. Routine and earned privileges. The press have had a field day over Huntly having things like an X-box in his cell. They want him to sit in a cell with fuck all.

Better to have things they can work towards having. Otherwise you have people who literally have nothing at all to lose. In that case, why not take it out on fellow inmates, and staff?
