Can't stand this attitude re prison attacks

After the murder of Ian Watkins and the assault and (very possible) death of Ian Huntley, social media and news articles have been flooded with comments such as 'Give that man a medal!!' 'Not all heroes wear capes!!'.
These people seem to forget that the killers are in prison for as equally heinous and despicable crimes as the aforementioned two. They have also most probably not attacked them over what they did, but over debts, drugs or just to gain some notoriety.

I am fed up of hearing comments like this.

Wouldn’t have come out anyway so won’t make much difference really

Which was probably his thinking. Nothing to lose

You can ‘oh dear’ me all you want. I don’t care.

Then what? Who goes and removes the bodies, cleans up and delivers the next lot of prisoners? You have some weird ideas

IThinkPink · 07/03/2026 10:37

Dollymylove · 07/03/2026 10:19

Let's hope Couzens is next

You do know that would put staff at risk? You are cool with that?

nice, thanks!

Absolutely. This man deserved to die after what he did to those poor girls - and the suffering he put their families through.

Or just maybe they’ll be feeling empathy with Russell’s victims’ families? Especially when they hear (as we all have) that one of his victims was a pregnant woman who he raped and strangled to death.

I believe that’s how I would feel, as a CSA survivor, if one of my attackers had been murdered in prison by a psychopath like Russell. Whilst still getting some closure with him being dead. There is definitely closure in that.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/03/2026 10:35

I doubt any of us will shed a tear at his death , however it’s easy to be of the ‘anyone in prison is fair game ‘ type of mentality - I worked in a company where our accountant was stealing from the company and got prison - he was also trying to help and protect his disabled wife who couldn’t work and ended up with a gambling habit due to the stress- and then the stealing to try and cover his tracks . You couldn’t meet a more kind , intelligent, pleasant person , but still did really stupid things when his life went to shit. Prison is a really mixed bag in many prisons - ( not the maximum security ones) - and much as I won’t mourn this guys passing I do think certain standards have to be adhered to in order to prevent this kind of incident, because one day it might not be Ian Huntley getting beaten to death but a relative of any of us in for some very poor life judgments - not murder etc that another prisoner takes a dislike too ,

If you read what I wrote, you’d have understood I said to lock them in the most secure building, REMOVE all guards and let them entertain themselves however they wish.

If I wanted to ‘perform’ it wouldn’t be for you.

One of the most ridiculous posts I have ever read on here. Total fantasy.

Of course. But we can’t go back in time and undo it. The perpetrator was treated with the full force of the law by incarceration for life. That’s his punishment. I don’t give a shit about Huntley but I cannot agree that it’s OK for murders to take place in prisons.

Most prisoners are not Huntley. Most will get out at some point. Is is good or safe for society for men who have been exposed to these levels of violence on a regular basis so it becomes normalised to suddenly be back on the streets?

It's very basic, if you don't want the increased safety risk of living with dangerous murderers and rapists, don't go and murder two little girls in cold blood.

Agree. People see to forget the people they're lording as heroes are also rapists and murderers. Imagine if your loved one had been a victim of one of them and people are calling them a hero?

In a civilised society people ne ed to be safe in prison. We don't have capital punishment in this country.

If my relative was a sexual predator or child murderer I would be congratulating their killer.

I don’t think offending pedophiles deserve to be safe anywhere.

Absolutely. This man deserved to die after what he did to those poor girls - and the suffering he put their families through.

Bellaunion · 07/03/2026 10:24

I completely agree OP and said as much on another thread. The crimes of Watkins and Huntley were absolutely appalling, no one is arguing that. But what these people who think the ones that killed them deserve "drinks" and "medals" is that there are victims and families impacted by their crimes and its absolute insult to them to be thinking their killers deserve "medals"

Prison violence benefits no one. It puts the very people tasked with keeping prisons safe and these people locked up at risk. The last thing we want is for these monsters to be breaking free and roaming the streets.

PonkyPonky · 07/03/2026 10:22

I think if you put yourself if the shoes of the victims families then you might realise that for them it is a closure. I can’t imagine knowing the person who brutally murdered my child still existing in the world. I would never say ‘give that man a medal’ but I can totally understand the sense of happiness that the world has one less awful person in it. It’s also nice to know that my taxes aren’t putting food on his plate any more.

He's dead.
Good riddance 👏

Westfacing · 07/03/2026 10:17

I shed no tears for the prisoners mentioned but am sickened by those who think it's fine to encourage this type of assault and salivate at the thought of who is next.

Imagine how utterly distressing for the prison staff, paramedics, police, hospital staff etc to see someone with his head split in two - imagine the sight of all that blood, the noise and chaos.

I don't care that Wayne Couzens might be trembling in his cell but I do care for the staff who have to manage these very violent men. Prisons are overcrowded and understaffed - it must be depressing and very challenging to work in such a place.

REDB99 · 06/03/2026 19:25

I think this is really well put and makes sense.

You are absolutely right.
It's frightening to think of internal prison security being so lax that inmates can be attacked or murdered.
It also puts staff at risk.

Sometimes, in very darkly misanthropic moments, I do think it'd be tempting to just put all the worst of the worst on an island with air-dropped supplies, and stream the goings-on as a subscriptions service (with additional betting), and all the proceeds going to crime prevention and victim services.

But that would be pretty fucked up, so on balance, probably best not to.

Performative posting. Again.

people have to work in that environment and then go home to their families if they are lucky. But yeah, as you said, you ‘don’t care’

Certainly not. Prison officers are in the most part, hard working decent human beings. They don't belong in the same sentence as Huntley and his ilk.

It isn’t just prison officers. My MIL used to teach in a prison and was at one point held hostage during a prison riot. That happened back in the 1980s, long before I knew her, my DH has told me how much it traumatised her.

I now understand that there was a teacher in the room when the attack happened, it made me think of her.

While I really couldn’t care about Huntley, let’s not pretend the piece of scum that has killed him(ok he’s not actually dead , but they have turned off his life support) is somehow a hero and worthy of praise, he raped and strangled a pregnant woman and killed two other people , so effectively killed four people , none of them deserve to be alive, but that’s a debate that won’t happen

BBC has just stated Huntley has died

Paul2023 · 07/03/2026 10:01

I think the man issue here is the security in our prisons. Yes a horrible individual has died but the person who did this was also horrible.

As a prison worker , I’m concerned for the safety of my colleagues. We can’t have people murdering eachother and think thats acceptable.
