To take my 8-week-old to a pub early evening?

boy2026 · 03/03/2026 13:34

Would IBU to attend a group activity (foreign language exchange) in a pub with my 8-week-old? The group meets on a weekday evening (not Friday) 7-9pm. Social drinking (not me as I will be driving) but nothing rowdy. Baby is breastfed so I can't attend unless I take them.

YABU - inappropriate to take a baby to a pub at this time
YANBU - no issues

It would be fine imo but many pubs don’t have licenses that extend to under 18’s being on the premises until 9pm. Especially if there isn’t a meal involved so that’s something to check

KnickerlessParsons · 03/03/2026 19:21

Has the baby had any vaccinations yet?

benten54 · 03/03/2026 19:09
  1. many pubs will not have a licence or insurance after eg 8pm for children.
  2. an adult hobby group is not the place to bring a baby. Totally changes the dynamic and the topics of conversation I’d be pretty unhappy. A friend brought her baby to our nighttime book club. 80% of the conversation was about the baby.

A social night at the pub can be precious child-free time for many people; the focus will almost certainly be primarily on your baby and it is almost inevitable that others in the group will be silently seething. Your baby's presence is not the focus of the meeting and his presence is not wanted or required by others in the group. Bringing him would be reminiscent of self-important women on mat leave striding into the office with their newborn in tow, expecting the other women office workers to drop everything they're doing to coo over their baby.

what an utterly bizarre comment!

In my experience, people who are interested in the baby will coo over them, those who aren't will ignore them, neither will have any impact on the event/workplace.

I'm not so much worried about baby as like I said I imagine he will be asleep on me most of the time! My question is more is it socially acceptable to have a baby in the pub at that time? I would absolutely leave if he cried, but he's a pretty placid baby and sleepy at that time of day so hopefully unlikely. I'll check the pub's rules.

depends on the type of pub. Family friendly one that serves food will likely have lots of other kids around, so absolutely fine. Laddy one when a match is on, old-man-type boozer or slightly scuzzy one where students are pre-drinking, maybe not.

damelza · 03/03/2026 17:54

You deserve a baby free night also! Is there any way someone could mind and feed him (expressed) for a couple of hours while you go to your group?

If you don't feel comfortable doing that just yet, then I would leave it for now. As others have said, bringing a newborn/baby along to an adult evening takes the focus from the group.

Congrats on the baby!

Wynter25 · 03/03/2026 17:45

Yes its fine! Enjoy x

Yhe but you should only get them a half pint, a full one would definitely be too much.

Joking, but no take them. We took ours to the pub when they were babies and it was great, mostly slept the whole time and got cooed over by old people.

I think IA probably BU and will message the organiser again to say I won't be coming just yet. I haven't been to the group before so don't have a handle on dynamics and don't want to barge in and ruin things for others.

I think that is best.

Personally I think it's fine with a 8 week old baby sleeping in a sling. Most pubs allow kids before 9am.

But....when do you think it starts being unreasonable? Maybe when the baby is sitting up, engaging with others, making sounds and therefore being a distraction for you and other.

I think you are probably ok until 12-16 weeks.

In the circumstances you describe no I wouldn’t go. A new person arriving with a baby in tow would be a bit odd in my opinion. It’s completely different if you are an established member of the group. Congratulations on your new baby

stapletonsguitar · 03/03/2026 17:02

I wouldn’t think anything of it at that age, they sleep when they sleep!

ItsStillWork · 03/03/2026 16:48

I think a newborn is fine, it’s kids I don’t like seeing in adult social groups.

i go to ww every week, I like my child free time to chat to other adults and it does annoy me when they bring kids with them and they’re messing about.

a non walking baby is fine

NoSoupForU · 03/03/2026 16:42

I think you're asking the wrong people! You should be asking the group members who have signed up for an adult activity with other adults.

I'd be fucked off if people started bringing children to something similar that I attend. I appreciate it's a baby in a sling but it's the precedent it sets. I'd probably be more inclined to just stop going though.

Such miserable people on this thread. Heaven forbid a sleeping newborn is present in anyone's line of sight.

and also very tightly wound people

Justploddingonandon · 03/03/2026 16:25

Does the pub allow it? Most where I live don't allow children after 7. If it is allowed I don't see any issue, babies are very portable at that age.

BlackCat14 · 03/03/2026 16:22

I think it’s fine, in a couple of months your baby may be having bath/bed sounds that time so make the most of it whilst you can! I took my baby to weight watchers sessions in a pub from 7-8pm when he was 5-16 weeks old and it was no bother.

Coconutter24 · 03/03/2026 16:16

Depends what the activity is, a lot of people got to these things for some adult time

WhatsConfusingYouIsTheNatureOfMyGame · 03/03/2026 16:13

Perfectly socially acceptable to have a baby in the pub at that time if the place allows it. But it may or may not fit the dynamic of the group, so as you don't know them well I think you're right to wait a bit.

AgnesMcDoo · 03/03/2026 16:13

Go for it. And enjoy

Moonnstarz · 03/03/2026 16:11

To me the timings are too late to be taking the baby to a pub. As others have said, lots have a rule about no children after 8pm and although it's only a baby and in a sling they could probably lose their licence if they allowed you to stay longer if that was one of their conditions.
I personally don't like town on a Friday night as it can be rowdy, so even though you would be going early I would worry about early drinkers already being out so I wouldn't feel safe taking a baby out to that setting.

LittlePetitePsychopath · 03/03/2026 16:10

I'd be fine taking a baby to a pub in the evening, I did, and I'd just leave if they ever got upset (but mine never did, they people-watched or slept).

But I don't think I'd go to an organised group with an 8-week-old. They're quite distracting, people tend to centre them, and it's a language group... I'm just not sure that it's a place to take children.
