Accidentally booked tickets a Bricktastic Lego event on Mother's day

My DD (13) is really into Lego so I booked tickets to Bricktastic event where people look at and sell Lego. It was £10 for 3 of us but I didn't realise til after I booked that it was on Mother's Day.
I have not told my daughter about it and I would rather have a lie in (it is at 10.30) and go to a late lunch which is booked for 14.30.
AIBU to just not go or am I being a bit mean.

It really isn’t that weird to book tickets to an event your kid would enjoy that’s not particularly your thing. That’s a very normal thing to do as a parent. She just didn’t realise it fell on Mother’s Day.

What difference does that make?

And why didn’t she just book two tickets to begin with so the child could go with one of her parents. Then she and the daughter could go to the next event. It’s a Lego event not a two weeks summer holiday. Talk about making a big deal out of something so trivial.

They sound like the type of family who all traipse around the supermarket together too.

Mothers day is to spend with your kids, not to lie in bed and ignore them. YabuZ

Notmyreality · 02/03/2026 15:38

Can’t honestly believe someone would post about this on MN. Make a decision. Go or don’t go. Are you honestly looking to strangers to justify your decision to let down your child?

According to the Bricktastic Facebook page their event is over for 2026 so assume it's a different lego festival

Presume its Brick Festival in Bury on Mother’s Day.

ThiagoJones · 02/03/2026 15:33

I’d go, it sounds like a lovely thing to do with your DD on Mother’s Day. You can have a lie in and go out for lunch any weekend.

BauhausOfEliott · 02/03/2026 15:29

Your kid's 13. Surely you can have a lie-in any weekend you want. If the Lego thing's at 10.30, go to that and then have lunch. If the Lego thing was at lunchtime, then yeah, cancel, but it's not going to kill you to be somewhere at 10.30am when you could have a lie-in on any other Sunday.

She wants to stay in bed and not go out

But she booked the tickets, so was happy to go. Now she's saying she wants a lie in, as its mothers day??

Quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I've ever read!

It really isn’t! And I think 95% voting that OP is BU shows that.

Yes I think the majority of people are sensible but there will be about 20 threads on here in the next fortnight agonising about having to do something on Mothers Day/ not doing something on Mothers Day etc.

Starlight1979 · 02/03/2026 13:48

What difference does that make?

To what?

I would still go and have my lie in in another day.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 02/03/2026 13:55

Sounds like a nice thing to do on Mother’s Day

PJ98 · 02/03/2026 13:52

I wouldnt prioritise a lie in (which could be interrupted anyway by something out of your control anyway) over an event, no :s

scottishgirl69 · 02/03/2026 13:51

Mothers day isn't the only day she can have a lie in or go for lunch.

Agree.
And why do they all have to go too. Its bizarre. If the mother has no interest (and Lego wouldn't interest me either) but why on earth did she book three tickets instead of two tickets in the first place. Making such a big deal about something so trivial is nonsense.

latetothefisting · 02/03/2026 12:55

um...well presumably OP doesn't consider a lego event "something enjoyable"? A view I share tbh!

OP if 'the three of us' includes another adult then why can't they take your dd and you have a lie in, then all meet for lunch?
Or you have a lie in on Sat or next week instead?

So why did she book a ticket for herself in the first place then?!?!

So why book the event in the first place?! 😂

It's so Mumsnet that Mothering Sunday is this super special and holy day where you can't do anything else!

Think a lot of people offline think exactly the same

CleanOurWater · 02/03/2026 13:30

Just switch your lie in to another day.

ChequerToRed · 02/03/2026 13:30

For me, this would be an ideal Mother’s Day. I wouldn't even care if the kids wanted to go, I bloody love a Lego show.

You can have a lie in and lunch any day. My family never did Mother's day. My mums birthday is very close to it and she's never been a fan of it. I do things for her all year round - the notion that you can only be spoiled and have a lie in because it's a special day seems a bit odd to me. You can go to lunch the day before or the week before if this is something your daughter would really like

I feel really sorry for a lot of the women on MN who take 'special' days so seriously. The amount of angst about one Sunday a year, I can only think they have really really shit lives.
