Accidentally booked tickets a Bricktastic Lego event on Mother's day

My DD (13) is really into Lego so I booked tickets to Bricktastic event where people look at and sell Lego. It was £10 for 3 of us but I didn't realise til after I booked that it was on Mother's Day.
I have not told my daughter about it and I would rather have a lie in (it is at 10.30) and go to a late lunch which is booked for 14.30.
AIBU to just not go or am I being a bit mean.

Mothering Sunday, as it is properly known, was a thing long before any greetings card manufacturer was founded. It's the middle sunday of Lent and the traditional day to go and help your poor old mum to do her Spring Cleaning.

Now that I’m up for - get the feather duster out kids!!

Nosejobnelly · 04/03/2026 07:38

Sounds like a great MD to me. Get your lie in the day before.

ImpatientlyWaitingForSummer · 04/03/2026 07:07

I think I would purposely book something like this for Mother’s Day as it’s the perfect way to do something fun and different together, maybe go for a late lunch somewhere nearby after. Sounds like a lovely day!

Mt563 · 04/03/2026 06:45

I get it, if mothers day is to celebrate you as a mum, it would be nice if you could choose (likely for one rare day!) what you did. But as you've booked this, you need to go. However, if you're that desperate for a lie in and have a partner, I think you need to talk to them about ensuring you get that some other time and also make sure you're getting enough time to do your own things regularly.

liveforsummer · 04/03/2026 06:40

And just further to add that to most, unless it’s miles away a 10.30 start with a team who can get herself ready is indeed a lie in 😅

I get that but the current interpretation of it is very much a ‘hallmark holiday’. The mum in question here doesn’t even want to spend the day with her daughter let alone spend the day cleaning with her 😅 In reality there’s no need to have a lie in on that very day when OP could just have one on the Saturday, or Sunday the next week etc. it’s weird to put so much focus on a day that has no real significance. People are fine to celebrate birthdays on different days where it’s more convenient, even kids can understand that and a birthday is far more important.

CeciliaMars · 03/03/2026 17:28

I did this a couple of years ago with Harry Potter World. Felt really lucky that there were tickets only a few weeks ahead, then realised it was Mother's Day! We had a great time and it was lovely to spend it with my daughter.

Just to confirm, you are complaining about spending time with your children on Mother's Day, and that something is at 10:30?

Indeed. Why did she have kids if her dream day is spending time by herself. Her child is 13, not 13 months. If she doesn’t like spending time with her kids now when will she?

Fupoffyagrasshole · 03/03/2026 14:54

Can’t you just go a lie in literally any other day? Why does it only have to be Mother’s Day?

this sounds super fun and I’d way rather do this with my kid than a lie in tbh

Purpleandredandyellow · 03/03/2026 14:53

Surely your husband could give you breakfast in bed, take your daughter off to Leo and then come back to collect you after for your Mother’s Day lunch!!

liveforsummer · 03/03/2026 13:33

Mother’s Day is just a day to sell cards and gifts. In the real world life goes on. You can have a lie in another day. It wouldn’t even cross my mind not to book something just because of such a day

What is the point in sleeping away most of the morning?! Spending quality time with your DD and having a nice lunch sounds like a great day.

I think it’s odd that you don’t want to do an activity with your child on Mother’s Day. Could you have your lie in on the Saturday?

CactusSwoonedEnding · 02/03/2026 22:55

A lie in till 9ish then Bricktastic fun before lunch sounds like a perfect mothers day to me.

You are weirdly over the top about this. Family’s going on days out together isn’t weird, and it’s not comparable to doing a weekly shop together. Bizarre.

It is weird when one of the family members doesn't want to go. Just let the teen go with someone who might actively enjoy it with her.
Unless their 'family days out' are few and far between, there really is no need for the angst about such a trivial thing.

ETA Seeing as the OP is making such a big deal about having a 'lie in' on one particular Sunday in the whole year, one can only presume that the OP is quite inflexible and everything is a big deal for her.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 02/03/2026 22:18

Catlady007007 · 02/03/2026 18:20

What difference does that make?

And why didn’t she just book two tickets to begin with so the child could go with one of her parents. Then she and the daughter could go to the next event. It’s a Lego event not a two weeks summer holiday. Talk about making a big deal out of something so trivial.

They sound like the type of family who all traipse around the supermarket together too.

Midsommermadness · 02/03/2026 21:51

As I understand it, you have double booked yourself on Mother’s Day.
You booked the Lego event for your daughter( not realising it was Mother’s Day) but you also planned a lie in and lunch which I guess you were looking forward to.
You have a few options, your daughter doesn’t know you have tickets so you could just 🤐
Or you could just tell her you have tickets and celebrate Mother’s Day on the Saturday and rebook your lunch.

CarrotVan · 02/03/2026 21:50

Bricktastic was awesome - we met the Lego chief creative, did a make a take with the new smart bricks, saw amazing MOCs - but it was 21/22 Feb

if you mean the event in Bury then it won’t be as good or take as long

PickAChew · 02/03/2026 21:36

I'd much rather go to a lego event than have an overpriced, mediocre lunch in an overstuffed venue.

WTAFIsWrongWithPeople · 02/03/2026 10:32

I mean, doing something with your daughter on Mother’s Day is sort of the point, isn’t it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not that I ever plan anything or even know when it is.

This. I’d rather do something DS enjoyed with me.

TheKittenswithMittens · 02/03/2026 20:42

I love lego.

I can't believe I'm having to spell this out.

She bought the tickets because it was something she knew her daughter would like. That doesn't equate to it being something she PERSONALLY "finds enjoyable."

Surely you understand the concept of parents doing things they don't personally find much fun (driving to swimming lessons/supervising dance classes/standing awkwardly around at parties or softplay etc.) because they know their kids enjoy them?

But she doesn't want to go now and is looking for reasons not to. Anyway I'm not a parent so I'm going to exit this thread because obviously my opinion isn't warranted - sorry I'm not parenty enough for you and don't quite get it

scottishgirl69 · 02/03/2026 12:56

Why did she book and pay for three tickets if she didn't want to go? She hasn't even told her daughter about it. If she didn't want to go then she didn't need to buy the tickets in the first place
