But that's sod all to do with age then. My 22 year old DS is child free and still doesn't do the type of parties you talk about

Good for him. We all have different personalities and interests . I loved travelling and partying with zero responsibility at his age . That’s why I’m saying I didn’t want kids in tow . Appreciate not everyone is the same .

i said for ME it wouldn’t be the same because of the type of lifestyle and socialising I did back then . I actually couldn’t do that stuff anymore even now in my late 30s but had a blast at the time. Appreciate you might be different .

So you've actually been backpacking in your 40s /50s?

I do regular AND have adult children.

I’m 38 and I wouldn’t consider having another but that’s easy for me to say because I had my two at ages 21 and 25 so I’ve got my children but if I didn’t have any at this point I may consider having a baby.

See I would hate the full moon party in my 20s. My DS hard no interest in attending one either at 20/21

And you can meet people in hostels at any age

right .

Coconutter24 · 02/03/2026 14:00

Triskels · 02/03/2026 09:14

What does this mean?

Age 35+ is considered an advanced maternal age and carries more health risks

Thechaseison71 · 02/03/2026 14:00

TheIceBear · 02/03/2026 13:58

Yes of course I know it. Having adult children is NOT the same as being child free. No “guessing” about it . It is not the same thing full stop.

Not a nomad. I mean meeting people at hostels , going to random parties , full moon parties etc etc . A week with a child is not the same . I do that now in my 30s .

Do you actually KNOW this or just taking an uneducated guess?

Yeh but it’s not quite the same it’s just not. And yes I’m sure travelling in your 50s or 40s is good but it’s just not the same as when you are young in my opinion .

Do you actually KNOW this or just taking an uneducated guess?

Whatnameisif · 02/03/2026 13:56

I had my first at 40. I wish life had worked out differently so I could have had more. I'd still like another but it never happened - if I found out I was pregnant I'd be delighted. So maybe 47?

DH is older than me though so if I was 47 I think realistically he'd be too old.

WimbyAce · 02/03/2026 13:53

Depends on circumstances. We struggled to conceive and had our second at 40. No issues with pregnancy and she was a dream baby. I think if I was younger I would have considered a third as both pregnancies were very easy at 35 and 40. Ironically we now have a large enough house for more children but it is a little too late!

LoveHearts69 · 02/03/2026 13:52

I’m 37 and 21 weeks pregnant with my third! So far the pregnancy has been the easiest yet, all bloods and scans etc come back perfectly fine. Having the other two to play with each other this time around massively helps too! This one wasn’t planned but we’re all very excited 🙏🏼❤️

BrieAndChilli · 02/03/2026 13:52

I had mine at 26, 28 and 30 - having had a fun few years travelling and working abroad.
Me personally would not have wanted to be older than about 35 having babies but maybe if I had not had any by then I would have felt differently.
When my eldest is 20 (and semi - independent) I will just be entering my fifties which I hope will be my 'me' decade where I am still young (and fit) enough to do some travelling/holidays and adventures but also time to make a bigger effort to save for retirement etc.

fedupandtired1 · 02/03/2026 13:51

My cut off was 45 I had my last ds at 42

YankSplaining · 02/03/2026 13:51

I wanted to be done having kids by 35, and was done by 31. But I’ve known lots of women who had babies after 35 - I was born when my mother was 36 - and several who had babies after 40. It’s a call you’ve got to make for yourself.

Hostels don't appeal to everyone, parties can still be done. There are plenty of child free young people that can’t or don’t want to go to parties.

Not saying it’s automatically the right choice for everyone to juggle young adult life and having a child, but you can still have a good time and have fun. You generally get more opportunities to do random stuff. Most people by mid-20s are working 5 days anyway.

Adventurous people carry that through every life stage. Propel uproot countries with kids in their 30s and 40s.

hostels certainly don’t appeal to me now but I had the best times in them when I was younger. I can do all the other stuff now with my kids . Can’t do the stuff I did when I was younger though really .

In exact same position OP

Marooney · 02/03/2026 13:35

I had my first at 40 and second at nearly 43, she’s 6 months now and I’m considering a third

TheIceBear · 02/03/2026 13:32

JellyCatonToast · 02/03/2026 13:19

It comes down to what do you prioritise- having children first or travel.

There’s no reason you can’t go away for a week on an adventure, even with a child in your 20s. All of the young parents I know have support from grandparents.

Maybe you can’t float around on a spiritual expedition as a nomad, but not everyone wants to do that at any age.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 02/03/2026 13:32

Lucky all you fertile myrtles who didn't take years to get pregnant and ended up being in your thirties before you have a child.

WhatAreYouDoingSundayBaby · 02/03/2026 13:31

These threads always go the same way. Older moms get defensive about their choices and circumstances, younger moms get defensive about their choices and circumstances. As others have said, it isn't always a choice.

I agree, and everyone thinks their choice was the best, but ultimately nobody is able to weigh up the options objectively because we have all either done one or the other. Even those who had, say, one child at 18 and then another at 35 are still going through that 2nd pregnancy and parenthood as people who have done it before so it's still not truly objective.

ObliviousCoalmine · 02/03/2026 13:30

I wouldn’t have gone past 30.

Idontspeakgermansorry · 02/03/2026 13:13

Having kids when you're older, is just not the same either, in my opinion. I'm happy to have traded some travel and freedom, to have started a family young. Everyone is different 🤷‍♀️.

Yeh everyone is different that is true . I’m sure it’s nice having kids when you are younger and have lots of energy . It just wouldn’t be what I wanted to do with my time back then personally .
