Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

I would love to get all the people mocking the op to draw their own map of the area. I spend ages on Google maps but I only have a rough idea of the location of Middle Eastern countries...I thought Iran was slightly further west rather than just across the gulf. I don't think that makes me an imbecile.

But presumably you are not planning to move there with your DC in less than a month from now! Is this thread genuine? It beggars belief anyone could be so passive and uninterested in the reality of where she was planning to go.

Ironically, the reason most want to adapt the human rights laws here is through fear of letting in too many people who come from countries with no human rights and bring that attitude here.

I don’t think people in the west want rid of human rights, they want to stop the abuse of our human rights laws

Absolutely this.

She probably doesn't mean a couple of weeks. It probably means something quite different.

What? I don't understand you??

she wrote ' give it a couple of weeks'

Exactly! Not important!

...nor people's opinions nor the right to live their lives in their way...

Papyrophile · 01/03/2026 19:39

@Cardomomle there's not much woodland and wildlife and very few historic sites. Comparisons are not valid

Our responsibility for people who relocated to Dubai ended when they stepped on the airplane.

Citizen or otherwise - if you moved there so you could enjoy 100% of your income and avoid UK taxes, you can also enjoy your missile filled skies.

Best post in this whole thread!!

👏

But they’d have committed gays to the death penalty as well?

Which would you prefer?

HS2 or living happy gay people?

Don't pull at that thread! 😱

BlimeyOReillyO · 01/03/2026 19:38

Cardomomle · 01/03/2026 19:36

Yeah, who cares about people's homes and wildlife and woodland and historic sites 😂

Exactly! Not important!

Good god! I hadn’t seen that gem! That’s vile @Jerys !

It just keeps getting worse.....

If HS2 was being built in the middle east they would have finished it by now

I knew it was in middle east Gulf and obviously Iran is in that area too but I hadn't studied the map in great detail until today.

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there. Then something like this happens and you get a reality check

Dh going to speak to his work tomorrow. I'm sure they wouldn't send him if it escalates

“The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there”.

They really don’t.

They will likely be evacuated if the situation does not settle
Assuming by 'they' you mean Brits livong or holidaying there.
Nothing to do with Oakshotte or Tice, not sure where the connection is there?

Wait until the OP finds out it’s above 50deg C in the summer with a UV of 12. Burn in less than 10 minutes.

Can I just check if I understand your point correctly?

You're comparing those of us who are gay to paedophiles?

Good god! I hadn’t seen that gem! That’s vile @Jerys !

I'm just hoping the likes of Oakshotte and Tice etc won't be expecting the UK taxpayer to evacuate them

Pricesandvices · 01/03/2026 19:32

If you didn't even know where it is then no, definitely do not go there.

It sounds like you haven't done anywhere near enough research. What did someone on here say a few months ago? "A glossy air conditioned shopping centre with medieval laws" (or words to that effect).

People bashing dubai that come from the UK are the biggest hypocrites 😂 you literally are living off the proceeds of slavery yourselves. Anyway, i am not an arab, not so I wish to live in dubai. But people on their high horses about it are just absolute morons.

Not as big a morons as posters who don’t know its geographical location…

Papyrophile · 01/03/2026 19:29

It's human nature to look for the best options for your career and family. And until yesterday, Dubai looked much more appealing than most of the UK.

Ponderingwindow · 01/03/2026 19:28

The UAE is what I fear my home in the US is working towards becoming. The draconian laws against women and minorities. The wink-wink looking the other way and ignoring those laws when it is convenient to make money.

moving to the Middle East right now is frankly insane. Even if this incident quiets, another flare is likely. Countries are showing that they will easily take the fight across borders.

For now, those of us lucky to be outside of that region should be thankful. There is no guarantee our geographic luck will keep us safe indefinitely, but giving it up is unwise.
