I was just introduced to a friends husband, and he went in for a hug, but with that sort of kiss/not kiss on each cheek. (If that makes any sense). This is absolutely not how I hug, so the whole thing threw me off and I ended up somehow in the kerfuffle, placing my hand on the back of his head mid hug. I am absolutely mortified!!!! I don’t know how it even happened, but it was just super weird and uncomfortable and I wanted the ground to swallow me up. Help me feel better about this. I’m currently planning to never set foot out my front door again!!!!!

Oh no 🤣

The only comfort I can give is hopefully anyone who saw it has forgotten it? ☺️

It was VERY conspicuous. And happened in a pin-drop silent room where most people’s attention was fixed on the family in their chairs because prayers had just ended. I’m genuinely still so horrified that the arches of my feet are tingling as I picture it while writing this😂

Shortly after I met DH, we were invited to a birthday party in the house of his closest (male) friend, who I had met briefly a couple of times. Most of the people at the party knew one another through work. I was very much the outsider. As we breezed in, I strode across the floor and kissed the friend confidently on both cheeks. Except it wasn't the friend. It was the friend's brother. More than twenty years later, the brother still says 'I travelled all the way from Cornwall and this woman I had never met before came straight up to me and kissed me.' The friend still says 'It was my birthday and she ignored me.' But for having lived in a kissing-intense southern European country, I would still be embarrassed now.

Typo

I'm not really a hugger but I have had people go to hug me but I go in for a handshake, it gets all confusing and my hands end up all over the place before we finally settle on a very brief awkward hug

ebfwtf · 03/03/2026 17:53

I’m sorry to tell you that I still think about the time my husband introduced me to his brother in law and I went to hug him but he’d already gone to shake my hand and I end up sort of hugging his arm? Like a sloth wrapped round a tree. And then he went to pat my shoulder as I turned away so then he was kind of hugging me from behind, “we’re flying Jack!” style. It was appalling.

that was seven years ago. Perhaps we should start a support group

After a serious business meeting/negotiation where I was trying to be very professional with the man from the supplier company, we went to do the hug/handshake thing rather awkwardly in the car park as I was leaving.

unfortunately a thread from my wool dress caught in his fly and what followed seemed like an hour’s operation to separate us,

We were both very very embarrassed especially as my colleague was sitting in the car waiting for me and was peering out at the shenanigans. We never spoke of the incident again although everyone in my office would make comments each time we spoke on the phone. He came to my office once or twice afterwards but I made sure we said goodbye with a handshake across the desk.

This made me laugh a lot.

Note to self: no wool dresses in the office from now on.

Sorry but this type of cringe outlives everything. Even death doesn’t diminish it. It WILL haunt your thoughts at 3 am when you can’t sleep and I can’t explain why or what it is about clashing hugs/greetings that makes this so, but that’s the way it is so accept it 😂 (once planted an unexpected- to both of us- smacker on distant aunt’s cheek, she sort of gasped and looked at me in ‘you fecking weirdo’ horror which I can still see in my mind’s eye even though she’s been dead years and never saw her again).

Babyijustdontgetit · 03/03/2026 12:31

I was attending a funeral for my friends mum. The funeral director knew my other friend who I went to the funeral with, but I didn’t know him. I had flowers in my hand. He went to hug my friend (they knew each other so all was fine), he went to take my flowers from me and I assumed he was hugging me too… he was not! It was so awkward. This was 12 years ago… I haven’t forgotten it!

LadyShrek2k19 · 03/03/2026 12:25

I was once doing karaoke with a male colleague (both had had a few) and during an instrumental break in the song he went to kiss my cheek as I went to lick his (many MANY wines).
He ended up kissing my tongue.
We both found it hilarious, but nobody else saw it happen!

I remember a thread on here years ago that was started by a woman who had gone to shake her boss’s hand and ended up cupping his balls.

I was just thinking about that very post! That whole thread was hilariously funny.

I once kissed my plumber goodbye at the front door as he finished work for the day! - the first work day of a job that was to take several weeks.

To this day, I don't know what possessed me.

I think it had been a long day and I wasn't fully focused on reality.

And before y'all ask, no he wasn't a demi-God - he was a portly, middle aged, grey and balding gent in a scruffy boiler suit - with a slightly shocked expression on his face.

I'm even older.

I didn't see him off the premises thereafter.

I am literally crying with laughter reading this. Thank you!

A few years ago DS was in hospital for ages, it was the middle of the night and I was just done with everything.

I went into the 24hr tesco to pick up a few things and get back to the hospital.

I saw a male friend coming towards and just walked over arms out and semi collapsed into their arms.

He then sort of tapped my back a few times and pushed me away saying I was squashing his eggs

It was a complete stranger

And then he became one of those strangers that you see everywhere, so I relive it multiple times a month.

zingally · 03/03/2026 11:28

Oh, I know how you feel.

At my dad's funeral of all places, I saw an old female university friend of his and my mum. I've met this woman a few times in the past, but honestly, not since I was a pre-teen. So a good 20 years previously.
I knew all their old uni mates were coming, including this woman, and she's quite distinctively looking, so I straight away recognised her.
For some reason, I couldn't tell you why, I marched right up to her, said, "thank you so much for coming!" and immediately pulled her into a hug!
She gave a little surprised, "oh!" and sort of gingerly hugged me back. But as soon as we separated, I could see her expression was very much "what the heck was that about?!"
I did the awkward hug with only two other people at the funeral, both of whom initiated it themselves. One was the wife of one of dad's cousins, and the other was a different old friend of dads.

Utterly bizarre behaviour on my part. I'm not even entirely convinced she knew who I was... But I have to assume that she knew whose funeral she was attending, and had enough memory to remember that her uni mate had a daughter about my age... Even so, I've been embarrassed for almost 8 years about it!

"Fortunately", I can blame "attending a parents funeral"! No one is at their best then!

Oh god, this reminds me of an excruciating physical embrace with the adult son of my DH's distant relative. It was the morning after a big family wedding and we were saying goodbye to everyone, as you do. As we hugged god only knows how but his hand got trapped underneath the strap of my Uniqlo cross body bag, he then tried to slide it away as I twisted the bag away which somehow, only ended up moving his hand onto my boob and trapping it even more tightly to me. It's like he became stuck to me 😂
He and I were the last people to say goodbye so to make it worse everyone was kind of standing around watching us. It was mortifying for both of us. It was only the second time I'd ever met him.

This happened about 3 years ago but I can still remember every little detail 😆

This literally made me.lol 😂😂😂😂
I can actually see it in my head 😂 😂 😂 😂

I’d love to think that was true but I’m more than three years beyond bending to speak to a seated mourner at a shiva (the home-based seven days of mourning after a Jewish burial) who turned their face as though they wanted to say something quietly to me and accidentally ended up smooshing their lips to mine in front of the entire room. The horror continues to drag me to the sunken place every time I think of it💀

i feel for you.
Shivas are awkward at the best of times ‘wish you long life’ and shuffle off meekly. I’ve been both the bereaved and shiva go-er and unless you know the mourner(s) well it can be a bit awks.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 03/03/2026 11:16

I mistimed a cheek kiss with my friend’s partner’s friend and ended up lip to lip. I think he was as mortified as me 😬

FortyFacedFuckers · 03/03/2026 11:12

That’s nothing compared to me, I went in for a handshake, colleague went for hug, somehow we hugged with my hand on their crotch 😱

Nosejobnelly · 03/03/2026 11:11

Reminds me of my friend going in for the hug/kiss of a newly religious Jewish friend - he recoiled - we went 🤦‍♀️ for context we are all Jewish but he is now religious and we’re not (it was at a party of a mutual friend).
Some hugs can be really awkward though - I’m quite small and if a big man hugs me I feel a bit buried and squished!

LoveheartBear · 03/03/2026 06:50

This is the hug…

I just said the same thing thing! The friend will be getting pregnant very soon….

TheBoldOtter · 03/03/2026 11:06

Are you Erika Kirk?

It genuinely doesn’t like something someone would think about much more than maybe being surprised and a slight laugh inside their own head.

Starlight1979 · 03/03/2026 10:56

Some of these are absolutely hilarious 😅

I have so many! Most recently, me and DH were meeting my best friends new partner (for the first time). When they arrived at the pub, we went in for hugs / cheek kisses / handshakes but it all got a bit awkward as we'd obviously never met the boyfriend before (so the familiarity dynamics were all off!).

I leant over to hug my friend but her bf stepped forward at the same time to shake DHs hand so his fingers ended up touching my boob 😂He jumped back and DH was just stood there holding his hand out to nobody. Then I randomly decided that because I had given my friend a hug and kiss that I couldn't just shake her bfs hand so I went to hug him too and he just kind of kept his arms in the air not touching me 😂

The whole situation must have been hilarious to any onlookers 😆
