To think that real life sex isn’t like TV?

After re-watching Bridgerton, am I wrong I thinking people aren’t having this kind of earth-shattering sexy time (I’m looking at you Duke of Hastings…) in real life?! Or have I just been missing out…

OP posts:

Of course. I’m not about to go on the hunt for Bridgerton sex! Just wondering exactly how far fetched it is… are there some of us lucky enough for this to be fairly realistic?!

I haven’t watched this series yet OP. But I have to say until the age of 40, I’d had only normal, good often sex, which did not look like in the movies, it wasn’t a caricature of terrible, but it was a pleasant 20 mins, with reasonable satiation and some high points.

at the age of 40 I met a man with whom I discovered a ‘ten floors higher’ level of sexual excitement, and rumbustious table-breaking, Vase-smashing ecstasy., and it was a revelation. It is good this man treated me well in other ways, because I would have been incapable of breaking up with him and going back to what I think of now as ‘normal human’ sex. Honestly, he could have charged £5000 a night and I would have paid it (until going bankrupt!) I remember thinking at the time if most people knew sex like that existed, there would be riots in the streets for it . he’s my husband now. Eight years later, we’ve calmed down a bit but God, I still have eyes-roll-back-in-head , tap-out-from-ecstasy experiences at least a few times a month, with a lot of damn good sex in between.

I think personally that its not the sex itself but the lead up to it that's not like tv.
I find the lead up to sex often quite awkward. I dont mean foreplay but before that.. like actually initially coming onto someone and starting things off.
Even in long term relationships I always found that unsexy and awkward.
In fact theres only been a couple of instances in my life where the initiation of sex felt completely smooth and romantic.

But once the sex has started then yeah most of the time its hot like it is on tv. If im with someone I actually like and that's returned and they are a decent lover obviously.
Like any woman I've had terrible experiences with selfish pump and dump men. But luckily that's been a minority for me.

For me its first kisses that are the worst.
Even if im extremely attracted to someone.
Its definitely not like in films for me at all. I have always found it incredibly awkward.
Films and tv usually make it all look so fluid and natural.
In reality it can be awkward and jarring to go from chatting to someone to putting your hands on them for the first time can't it? Even when its something you really want to happen

I took it to mean the part after sex where the woman shoves something between her thighs (like a towel, a pillow case, her t-shirt etc) to plug herself up whilst she waddles off to the bathroom to stop any sperm from dripping out onto the floor until she gets there 🤣🤣

This isn’t something I’ve ever felt the need to do.

I don’t go sprinting off to the bathroom straight after sex and if I did, I really wouldn’t be bothered by a bit of spunk running down my leg.

After 3 hours in the bath pleasuring "him", then overnight into day when sore down there, nipples cracked, sleep deprived, mouth dry, limbs aching - no it's not mind blowing after enduring 20 years of it at least weekly. The odd time maybe initially but after that you must be joking, it's torture.

That’s not something that would be depicted as fun on television. And there’s big difference between consensual sex and what you’re describing, which sounds more like coercion and rape.

Didimum · 01/03/2026 19:34

DH and I are 40, two kids and work full time. Yes, we regularly have Bridgerton sex! I can understand sex not being that important to others though. Everyone’s different.

I mean I’ve never continually rearranged the bedding so nothing but my shoulders are visible.

Why do none of the men in Bridgerton have syphillis? Surely Benedict is responsible for super gonorrheoa however you spell it.

I mean I’ve also never picked a table/worktop etc that has loads of things on it that I’ve had to sweep off with my arm before sitting on it.

No one seems to get cramp during sex, calf cramps are a bastard and then you’re screaming for a different reason.

The most realistic sex scenes I have ever seen are in heated rivarly, particularly one in the last episode to the point that you feel you’re intruding by watching.

I mean it doesn’t have to be earth shattering, but you should be having a great time.

Well yes, but are people actually having this kind of sex in real life?!

Only in the first month or so

Missj25 · 01/03/2026 19:05

DancingNotDrowning · 01/03/2026 14:02

the sex is centred around desire, romance and longing.

It’s surely not unusual to experience that sort of sex in the early stages of a relationship, perhaps not so much decades in.

Exactly 👌

Where after unprotected sex you cup your vagina with your hand and waddle to the toilet to try and stop any semen from gushing out on the way there.

You did ask!

Thank you for sharing. I didn’t know it had an official title.😆😆😆

What is a post 6 cup and waddle please?

MrsClattenburg · 01/03/2026 18:47

As for the farting, I'm sure we've all let out a sly fanny farm at some point...?

MrsClattenburg · 01/03/2026 18:47

Barnbrack · 01/03/2026 17:53

I just grip tightly until I get there, how far are you from your bathroom?

Our bathroom is downstairs so I definitely need something to catch it as I waddle down the stairs with my legs clenched together. It is not a good look! 😂

LondonLady1980 · 01/03/2026 18:13

🤣🤣

We can manage about 10 minutes - any more than that and it starts getting very uncomfortable for me!

Have you tried lube or estrogen cream

YourSassyPanda · 01/03/2026 18:40

I really enjoy sex even having been married a v long time now with teenage dc but an hour plus of penetration would have me concerned about a uti! Is your husband known as Sting by any chance? Grin

QuaintMauveCrow · 01/03/2026 18:35

Barnbrack · 01/03/2026 17:36

I agree, like not daily, there isn't the time but semi regularly having really involved sex that's an hour or 2 long and when we were in our 20s it was several times a week and fairly mind-blowing. Are people just having rubbish sex?

im in my 30s and have enjoyed long & very passionate sessions throughout my adult life… currently single but definitely wouldn’t settle for any less if I found a connection with someone again 😁

I used to.😏
50 years of married life cured that though.

Barnbrack · 01/03/2026 18:31

LittleJustice · 01/03/2026 18:26

Oh and it's not a hour's penetration. It's kissing and being absorbed in each other. Time just passes. We lose time.

I'm post menopausal and can very much recommend topical estrogen cream if dryness is a problem. Not during sex, in preparation for. Also helps with bladder weakness.

Yes! All of this!

Barnbrack · 01/03/2026 18:29

Doseofreality · 01/03/2026 18:08

Clearly not peri menopause as al km that friction, plus vaginal dryness would set her on fire! 😂

I'm 43 and very perimenopausal, we do have some decent lube, I think it's called silk, if I'm having a dry phase. I do find if I stay hydrated, work out regularly and get plenty of protein in less dry, I do have PCOS though so I've been managing dodgy hormones forever.

This is my experience too. Sometimes I have been quite tender the next day though! But at the time it's amazing and so intimate just concentrating on each other for all that time.

Thank goodness, I was starting to think I was a bit of a weirdo there...

I'm 43 and definitely perimenopausak, quite far I to it infact as some months I've not had a bleed at all lately.

LittleJustice · 01/03/2026 18:23

I've always had fantastic sex. I love it. I like spending time pleasuring my partner and being pleasured. I haven't seen this Brigerton sex but I'm back from a weekend with my partner where we had an hour's sex Friday evening, Saturday morning, Saturday evening and then again this morning.

But we don't live together and have only been together 18 months. But we are in our 50s, no dodgy hips or farting though. I do a lot of yoga, I think that flexibility definitely helps.

ISpendTooMuchTimeOnMN · 01/03/2026 18:22

Barnbrack · 01/03/2026 18:01

It's not an hour of constant plugging away. It's slow and varied and involves position changes etc. I get this a lot when I talk about the sex we have. I dunno. It's what we've always done and I've only had 1 other serious partner and we were similar. We get sort of caught up in it and time kind of disappears

This is my experience too. Sometimes I have been quite tender the next day though! But at the time it's amazing and so intimate just concentrating on each other for all that time.

Whitengold · 01/03/2026 18:18

I think sex can often be like that. Not everytime without fail, but regularly. I think they're showing sex between people who are completely in love and absorbed in each other, which might be the unrealistic part, but I do think when things are really good between you it's like that.

As for lengthy sex, I'm really surprised at those shocked at the idea. No one wants him banging away for more than a few minutes (I wouldn't have thought) but an hour or more in bed enjoying each other seems normal to me, when you have the time.
