I’d definitely cancel not just because Cyprus is right at the top of Iran’s list of targets but because of the CO2 emissions, it’s irresponsible to fly to the other side of the planet now just for fun. Take the moral high road on this one it’s about more than money

Cyprus is not at the top of irans hit list, give over.

snd you won’t stop people flying to go on holiday, it’s also not the other side of the world.

well google is wrong. Unless my google is wrong because my google says that’s not a US airbase 🤷‍♀️🤣. Says it’s a Cypriot airbase which the US can have l8mited use of with specific permission.

i guess Iran might think this is semantics and it might possibly be a Cypriot airbase on paper and a US airbase in practical terms. No idea.

If you are referring to Akrotiri it's RAF, one of the UK Sovereign Base areas on the island.

Disscombobulated · 01/03/2026 06:59

I am in Cyprus - it’s absolutely fine. The air base referenced as US is Cypriot. I am supposed to be traveling to the UK early tomorrow and am expecting possible delays, nothing more. Cyprus is extremely well protected by the military bases and the Cypriot people have lived close to conflict for ever. They generally don’t get involved.

When she was told what it was I think it scared her a little! It’s one thing seeing the news but another in real life

You’ve been able to see the missiles over Israel/Iran for a couple of years at least. Cyprus has never been targeted by Iran before than I’m aware of.

Technically their missiles could hit it I think but I’d like to think they have bigger fish to fry currently.

The US doesn’t have a base there? They have personnel in the RAF base and I’d guess maybe use it for refuelling (not sure) but seeing as the U.K. aren’t involved in this conflict then Iran would be crazy to escalate the conflict by bombing an raf base.

Friend of mine is Greek Cypriot and is over there a lot and isn’t bothered. I would still go.

Why not?

Its a lot further. They are using short range missiles and drones for gulf states, they have loads of them. They have enough targets in gulf, israel, iraq, kuwait and jordan and they dont really care if they are civilian or military as we saw in Dubai.

I'm meant to be going to the Maldives via Abu Dhabi in 4 days. I'm thinking that won't be happening.

Not if you’re flying Qatar Airways no. I was meant to head back to Europe from Asia via Doha with Qatar airways and the airspace is closed until 6th of March with flights only resuming 7th of March. So I’m doing a silly route home now!

We’re going on 11th April. Please let me know how you get on. I have wanted to go to Petra for decades.

It's amazing ❤️

OonaStubbs · 01/03/2026 04:25

Iranians are Persian, not Arab.

And Cyprus is a long way away from Iran.

sabababa · 01/03/2026 04:22

babasaclover · 28/02/2026 19:27

Jordan is epic especially Petra. It’s such a civilised place. Plus Arabs don’t usually aim for other Arabs. I’d be happier to go to Jordan or any other Arab nation than Cyprus. In fact I’ve been in Middle East more lately than Cyprus

Edited

You know Iranians aren't Arab right?
And not sure Syria would agree with Arabs not targeting Arabs..

sabababa · 01/03/2026 04:21

You've got ages until May and Cyprus has never been affected.
See how this unfolds and make a choice closer to the time

MyTrivia · 01/03/2026 03:23

We went to Cyprus last June and we are going again this June. When I was there last year, I had a friend texting me to ask if I was worried.

Dp has a business trip there prior to the holiday which is why we’re going.

Flomingho · 01/03/2026 03:10

Please don't cancel yet as you will lose your money. The travel company will cancel you if it is necessary and you will get a full refund. We had similar last year with our holiday cancelled due to a hurricane and got a full refund. There is still almost 2 months to go so hopefully it goes ahead. Cyprus is lovely 😍

Shittyyear2025 · 28/02/2026 19:13

Why not?

Because they don’t have a US base?

LorettaYoung · 01/03/2026 01:33

I would certainly cancel OP. Do posters here not understand the gravity of this situation?

And yes they have bases there. We once got lost and started driving into one. The military soon turned us around, was quite scary. Cancel and reconsider later in the year, or book elsewhere if you can.

MidLifeWoman · 28/02/2026 19:47

I can’t believe how incredibly blasé everybody here is - I love Cyprus, have been there many times, but would definitely consider cancelling.

harri7284 · 28/02/2026 19:34

Just hang tight, if you’ve got insurance it should pay out if FCDO advice changes.

MMBaranova · 28/02/2026 19:30

But then if we rewind even further to last year's events, this Israeli source from last summer asks how long Cyprus can 'stay out of the fray'? Reason: Cyprus has 'emerged as central logistical hub for Israel'.

Source is INSS at Tel Aviv University.

How Long Can Cyprus Stay Out of the Fray? | INSS

So, would I cancel? No. But I would monitor the situation. It is unclear what is going on and first will come some clarity and then an indication of how long this conflict plays out.

[Edit typing: Cyrus replaced by Cyprus. Too much Persian history reading.]

How Long Can Cyprus Stay Out of the Fray? | INSS

Since the escalation with Iran, Cyprus has emerged as central logistical hub for Israel. Just hours after Israel’s strike on Iran, it was reported that Israeli airlines evacuated their aircraft to Cyprus, Greece, and other destinations as part of a pre...

Cyprus and spill-over incidents from Iran-Israel conflict?

I'd say unlikely but. The but is that things have been changing.

The EU declared the Iranian Revolutionary Guards a terror organisations so in retaliation Iran said 'no, you are' to EU military entities.

Article from last Sunday from a Cypriot source:

Cyprus’ air force, navy declared terrorist organisations by Iran | Cyprus Mail

Cyprus’ air force, navy declared terrorist organisations by Iran

Cyprus’ air force and navy were both declared terrorist organisations by the Iranian government late on Saturday night, with the Iranian government declaring the air force and navy of every European Union member state a terrorist organisation in retali...

For goodness sake. The dramatics are ridiculous.

Best , cancel your holiday.

AtomicBlondeRose · 28/02/2026 17:35

Iran are already attacking US bases all over the Middle East! However I don’t think they’d be likely to aim at Cryprus.

Why not?

If 1200 miles is too close for you how far away do you need to be? Genuinely curious, if you’re worried ask if you can switch destinations, but work out how far away you both need to be. Then look at those locations

uk for example is 2700 miles away, and if Cyprus is 1200. Then I guess it’s either go long haul or some where closer to home?

Gaza where the retaliation will happen is 200 miles away
