If your worried op then just cancel and lose your deposit. You’ll only be worrying until you need to pay the balance anyway. Cancel now and find somewhere else and you won’t need to think of it again.

Yes this is my line of thinking ! Already looking at the Balearics ☀️

I’m making light of this… We don’t know how this will play out, just look at Iraq and its aftermath! But it doesn’t follow that people should think there’s any realistic prospect of Cyprus being under missile attack from Iran in May. That just indicates a complete lack of knowledge of the reality of this situation.

Realised I missed a vital “not” from the first sentence of my post!

So am I, but the government have just advised against all travel to Jordan- so insurance will be invalid, and flights likely cancelled.

Where did you read this?

The FCO website still has the bulk of Jordan in green. The only red bit is in the vicinity of the Syrian border, which has been the case for a long time.

Depends how far ahead people are looking.

I'd expect Jordan/Jordanian airspace to open for business fairly quickly.

Yikes. I’m going to Jordan in a few weeks and am not planning on cancelling.

@notabingthing You are being sensible and realistic to prepare to cancel your holiday. There are so many people on mumsnet making light of this war that I suspect a propaganda campaign.

Btw wherever you go the biggest risk is your drive to the airport

Exactly. In general, people are crap at assessing actual risk.

I'd have thought it was one of the safest places to go given the military bases.

Not if they’re targeted!

notimagain · 01/03/2026 07:46

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 01/03/2026 07:43

You know there are us airbases in the UK in a big arc about 100 miles north and west around London. All of which could be a target.

....But for the benefit of the nervous and context they are not a target for any missile Iran have got in their arsenal or what is left of it...even Cyprus is a stretch.

exactly That I couldn’t relax knowing what I am seeing over my sunbed is killing masses let alone putting my family in danger

If you believe you’d have seen missiles “flying over your sunbed” when in Cyprus, you have no idea of the geography of the region, or who’s fighting who. Israel, Gaza and Iran are all to the east in Asia… Cyprus is to the west in the Mediterranean, 100s of miles from Isreal and 1000s from Iran!

The pilots who have seen things are viewing things 100s of miles away from 40000 feet!

I’ve checked this too. To be specific:

”Andreas Papandreou Air Base
(also known as Paphos Air Base) is the primary military airbase of the Cyprus Air Force, situated on the north side of Paphos International Airport. It acts as a key strategic hub for the Cypriot National Guard, hosting attack and search-and-rescue helicopters. The base is undergoing a U.S.-backed expansion to increase capacity for humanitarian aid, evacuation operations, and regional security, with upgrades planned for completion around 2026.”

So it seems that it’s not a US base per se, but the US are increasingly using it…

However, of all the places Iran could potentially attack, there are many, many more far closer and more prominent, and they’d have to fly a missile over Israel to hit Cyprus. Any missiles they are going to be able to lob in that direction are almost certainly going to be directed towards Israel itself, and moreover Israel are able to shoot them pretty much all down all missiles down coming their way!

Besides, even if the regime does survive, a very big “if”, any residual capacity for striking foreign bases with missiles will be wiped out within days. There may be a very small threat just at the moment, but shortly that will be effectively reduced to zero.

It’s very possible there may be terrorist attacks in the weeks and months ahead as a result of what’s happening in Iran, but nowhere is safe from those, and if you want to be sure of avoiding those, you’ll need to cocoon yourself away at home.

Edited

Just imagine how many counties worldwide that the us has this sort of arrangement with too. Iran would be there a while if they were to target them all! As I said earlier Cyprus has come out unscathed from far closer wars/unrest than this one. I lived through the Iraq and Syrian wars out there. Cypriots just went about their day as they are now

Paraguay · 01/03/2026 07:37

It'll be fine

TokyoSushi · 01/03/2026 07:36

Just hang on and see what happens. Dubai tomorrow? Yes probably cancel but Cyprus in May, anything could happen by then.

PersephoneParlormaid · 01/03/2026 07:36

I’d wait and see, May is a while away yet,

Ah, that "airbase"...

As Google says it's a small military facility tacked on to the North side of Paphos civilian/international airport.

Yes I gather the US use it, lots of airports around the world are dual use, but (making myself hostage to fortune) I can't see it being high priority on the Iranian's target list...I certainly wouldn't be cancelling a holiday over it.

notabingthing · 01/03/2026 07:32

Flomingho · 01/03/2026 03:10

Please don't cancel yet as you will lose your money. The travel company will cancel you if it is necessary and you will get a full refund. We had similar last year with our holiday cancelled due to a hurricane and got a full refund. There is still almost 2 months to go so hopefully it goes ahead. Cyprus is lovely 😍

Cyprus is my favourite place, the food, the people, the beaches, i’d be very very sad to cancel, so we shall be sitting tight ! My concern is terror attacks in retaliation but I do think Cyprus wouldn’t be top of the list.

Iran are already attacking US bases all over the Middle East! However I don’t think they’d be likely to aim at Cryprus.

Yes, but if anyone thinks Iran will
have the capacity to even try to launch missiles at US bases beyond next week, let alone in May (when the OP is going) they have no idea of the military balance of power here.
