You mean at the start of the conflict when people didn’t have the benefit of hindsight like you. Yeah that’s funny, but not in the way you think,

The hindsight to suss out that there are military bases there and in the past it has been an evacuation point during conflict, that hindsight?

Some of the advice at the start of this thread was frankly laughable.

Just got back from a work trip from Cyprus, all fine I don’t think you should cancel.

Er they wouldn't be accidentally bombing it though would they....
..

Exactly.

And they literally did bomb it. Whether it was Iran or Russia as they are stating it got hit

Who is ‘they’? The drone that caused minor damage at the RAF base was the work of a militia group. People need to read the facts and stop spreading misinformation. It is simply wrong to say that Iran is intending to bomb Cyprus.

“British Bases Out” is the slogan of Cypriot protesters after a drone strike targeted the RAF Akrotiri airbase.

Seems daft to cancel to me, I doubt anyone is going to be accidentally bombing Cyprus, seeing as it's quite clearly not the mainland.

Wise decision to cancel @notabingthing Flowers

We cancelled ! Going to go maybe next year instead, there was other reasons to be honest aswell not just what’s going on over that part of the world. I think that was just the decider for us !

Sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you this year. Hopefully things will work out better next year.

Have you managed to change your holiday?

This is exactly how I feel. Cyprus is my favourite place to go on holiday, we love the place, but it’s too close to that part of the world for us at the moment. I mean yes, realistically it’ll probably be fine by may but we have to pay a good while before that so we need to make a decision, I’m not happy just waiting and seeing

Have you managed to change your holiday?

RedRiverShore6 · 03/03/2026 15:32

We cancelled a holiday in covid and just lost the deposit as it was before 12 weeks or whatever it was, bear in mind though that if you paid a low deposit as a special offer you have to pay the extra to make it up to the full deposit which would have been due.

With an outbreak of war you might not.

The first few pages of this one aged well!

Yes, there seemed to be an attitude that because you are on holiday real world events can"t impact you at all, very ridiculous.

It's not premature to just want to book and plan a holiday you are certain is going to go ahead and isn't going to stress you out for months wondering about bullshit.

Isn't that the case when most people book holidays in advance? You never know what COULD happen it's never certain a holiday will go ahead though is it? You just can't guarantee that

Cyprus is currently not on the list of places the government is advising not to travel. Turkey and Egypt are though.

turkey only the bit that borders Syria as has been the case for years.

egypt only the top of the peninsula that joins Israel - also for years. In happier times I’ve travelled to taba and crossed the border into Israel for a trip. Those days are done but hurghada / marsa alam etc are fine for now.

That said things can change on a hairpin and Iran are hitting everything they can reach.

cerisepink889 · 05/03/2026 19:36

My parents have just cancelled their trip to Cyprus as their friends daughter is a travel consultant and she said that holiday companies will soon be rising prices of their European/mediterean destinations shortly as people will not want to go to Cyprus or Turkey. They had only paid a deposit so they transfered this to another holiday to Tenerife.

They didnt want to risk not being able to go if situation escalates and then having to pay over the odds to go to Spain .

There's always dickheads that dont understand Geography and don't listen to the news.

It was very predictable what happened though others will swear blind you were being ridiculous.

They also were the ones who were shocked when we went into lockdown and ridiculed everyone in Jan 2020 going 'errrr this is a problem'. And a whole pile of other world events because they weren't paying attention.

Your question was sensible in the context of the time and always was proportionate.

I’m not going to be as rude as to call anyone names but according to my friends and family in Cyprus the people listening to the news are the problem here. It’s absolute hysteria. Apparently the drone that landed/was brought down on the runway and minorly damaged a hangar was not even Iranian. They are furious that family back here are getting upset and worried by scary headlines while life is going on as normal.

It’s quite rude to call other people ‘dickheads who don’t understand geography or listen to the news’ just because Not everyone flies into a panic about stuff like this. What do you think people who live in Cyprus are doing? Fleeing the country? I doubt it.

Last year, I was in Cyprus and my friend texted me to say I should go home because it was near Israel. I would call that neurotic.
