To think that everyone is getting far too excited about this Green win?

All this fuss about one Green win - I really don't think it's massively significant given the local demographic and the upcoming local elections will be the real test.

As if the Greens are going to get anywhere near power! Not going to happen.

I don't read the papers, just hear tv and radio news.

Papers have way too much bias for my liking so I try to avoid them.

If you’re concerned about bias, it actually probably makes the most sense to consume as wide a range of news media as you can: a few different papers, radio stations and TV channels.

5MinuteArgument · 28/02/2026 17:35

I think the Green win is significant. They've created an Islamo-Left coalition and achieved their victory on the back of growing sectarianism in politics (the constituency is 29% Muslim).

This has proved an effective combination to win power. But I fear it will unravel for them as time goes on.

As opposed to TV and radio news 😂 glad you've got that covered

You would! The Guardian are covering this point in their reporting the by-election.

They are unlikely to get into power but they will give Labour a very bloody nose over the coming years, and at the next GE.

They will split the left/liberal vote and that will benefit Reform.

Didn’t work in the by-election though did it?

LlynTegid · 28/02/2026 15:07

Hype about a by-election result is nothing new. People voted tactically to keep Reform out, same will happen in the Senedd elections to a degree and no doubt for several councils who have elections in May.

It's unusual to have an MP who has done a real job though, shouldn't be novel but sadly is.

Tikitaka20 · 28/02/2026 15:01

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 28/02/2026 07:36

I agree, yet listening to the media, you wouldn't realise this.

Pikachu150 · 28/02/2026 14:56

I know quite a few people in that area and one of the reasons they voted was because they were worried about Reform winning.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 28/02/2026 12:01

Truss still had better ratings than Keir Starmer.

Fair point. Many if not all of the female politicians the pp listed had higher ratings than Starmer.

Greenbather · 28/02/2026 14:43

Everyone can take something good from the Green win, for the Green party that is obvious but I wouldn't be getting too confident that this result would be replicated in a General Election.
For Labour voters like me we expected a punishment but are overjoyed that Reform didn't win, that's the most important thing. It does annoy me that it is constantly peddled here that Starmer has zero support, I still support him and I know plenty of others who do. I suppose it's unlikely that he will take Labour into the next GE but maybe a leader who is generally more popular in the country can secure another Labour government. For now Labour are the government with still a huge majority so they need to make the most of the next 3 years and not let themselves be pushed into an early GE.
Reform can be happy that they get to be whining, Trump-like bad losers and get to peddle more of their racist nonsense whilst insisting that they never expected to win anyway (yeah, right).
Tories are irrelevant generally but would have never expected a result in this type of constituency, I was very surprised they got so many votes! But they can also be happy with the Labour loss.
So a result with positives for all. One thing I do like about the Greens is they want to bring more positivity into politics despite having some crazy policies and sadly not really being bothered about the environment like they used to be.

What's wrong with that? Nice to have a bit of patriotism. Labour used to be a patriotic party too.

Well - Truss?

You're hearing what you want to hear.

You’re focusing on female politicians on the right and bizarrely silent on Labour’s lack of female leaders.

No help to women at all.

SaulJunction · 28/02/2026 10:35

EasternStandard · 28/02/2026 10:22

Really? What’s wrong with female politicians on the right? Men have a range of political views in power, why can’t women?

Sounds very restrictive and sexist.

The Conservatives were never going to do well in that constituency. And its definitely too soon for people to forgive them. But that will fade with time and in comparison with the current government. So things will perk up. I like Kemi. She's straightforward and honest which is a novelty in politics.

If I was a Tory living in that particular constituency, I'd happily have lent my vote to another party simply to get Labour out. The previous MP was vile and had utter contempt for his constituents.

No. They've voted for Palestine. We all know that.

Is "flag waving" in the UK controlled by Reform? Were flags waved before Reform was set up? Do you think non Reform voters wave flags?

Ask their constituents? We have a Labour MP at the moment here. Hasn't done anything as far as I can see re standing up for my rights or making my life better. In fact the potholes are worse.

It's not the 'standing up for the rights of UK citizens' people don't like.

After all, that's what they've just voted for in Gorton and Denton.

It's the flag waving, relentless, divisiveness of Reform. Reform could have a decent discussion without encouraging the hanging of flags everywhere. But they don't.

Intersted to know what Reform have done for constituents in terms of standing up for their rights and making life better.

I think he will. Its par for the course with many political parties being asked to run in a seat that its impossible to win rather than parachuted in. I think he will get an easier seat to try for in 2029. Hes very clear in his communication and backs everything up with facts and figures due to his academic career, which is useful in debates. Facts are often in short supply these days.

Probably somewhere in coastal East of England would go for him.

It’s bullshit, of course greens were going to win in an area like that.

Reform will take the local elections in May.

I find it absolutely baffling that peoplr would support a party that wants to legalise class a drugs, have open borders, leave nato and get rid of our nukes. Absolutely batshit crazy. Thankfully they have no chance of getting any real power.

SaulJunction · 28/02/2026 10:15

Pineneedlesincarpet · 28/02/2026 09:54

I think thats the by-product of standing up for UK citizens unfortunately. We can't take in the world or prioritise the rights of non UK citizens over the wellbeing of UK citizens. Its just a fact of life and tax. Many people on the left dont like it of course.
