While the vote in Gorton and Denton may be described as a 'protest' vote the strength of both the Greens and Reform performance is something to worry all of us not just Labour.

"Reform have been laughed at and scorned by the media and elite"? Seriously? Reform only got where they are because they've been platformed by the media and bankrolled by the elite. They're lead by a public school former merchant banker who likes his photo taken grinning next to a convicted felon and rapist with a gold toilet and an immigrant wife in New York. Hardly a horny-handed son of toil, wouldn't you say? Ask Fiona Bruce about how many times the BBC have laughed at Reform, or how many times they've packed Question Time with people whose attitudes were last broadcast before the Suez Crisis, or how many times Farage has been on Radio 4 all the way back to 2014 when he didn't have a single MP in whichever brand of Alt-Reich he was trying to promote that week.

Because Muslims (on the whole not all ) are very socially conservative,
Half all British Muslim people think homosexuality should not be legal for instance, 39% said a woman should always obey their husband.

Greens believe in legalising all drugs and environmental issues but you can’t help feeling they have sold their soul somewhat for votes, they campaigned on Gaza which they agree on but I feel there is a fight for the direction of the party which I used to support.

It is the beginning of sectarian politics in the UK.

Come off it, it's an Islamophobic generalisation to make. And ridiculous.

And so what if they - and non-Muslims - voted based for them based on their stance on Palestine? There are worse causes to support than wanting your country to speak up against genocide.

climbintheback · 27/02/2026 10:12

People who did not vote need a kick up the arse!

HappyFace2025 · 27/02/2026 10:11

I agree @MissScarletInTheBedroom as I also feel that we went completely the wrong way with the Brexit vote and we are now isolated from Europe. Not that things are much better there. My partner is French and they have the Far Right (le Pen) against the Far Left (Mélenchon) fighting next year to become Président.

I’m old and been hearing that the country is doomed since I was old enough to take an interest in politics.
Lots of people emigrated, but they soon came back.
The problem is these parties are too far left or right. That’s what I’m finding hard to get my head around. It’s just causing too much division.
I did like Hannah Spencer’s speech around working hard , she seems someone to look up to in that respect but a lot of the Green policies are just too radical for me. I can’t on board with this or Reforms more right wing ones. Politically homeless here and not the only one I suppose.

They'd swiftly fall from favour once people realised they'd be paying much higher taxes. Nobody wants to pay more tax.

But that's also why I don't think they'll be a genuine threat come the GE.

Yes, the collection of policies all together would very obviously be totally economically unfeasible. Hopefully that message lands with the electorate, but there are lots of people who don't have the first clue about finance or macro-economics.

You can't imagine any muslims being in favour of net zero, scaping tuition fees, rent control and nationalisation of infrastructure? Why not? What an odd generalisation.

What is it about legalising all drugs that is so appealing to green voters?

I think they can take a sizeable chunk of Labour voters. That’s fine.

It's frustrating but it is what it is. The genie is out of the bottle there so we just have to deal with it. I live in an area with a large Muslim population and of course Gaza is a big issue, but it's not an election-winner here. I suspect the Greens also did well because of anti-Labour, anti-Starmer sentiment leading to their usual voters switching to Green to keep Reform out. They just had a better campaign.

I hope you're right.

I shall politely and respectfully suggest that you need to be careful when simply parroting fables put out by the losers.

As we've seen with Trump many times, reaching immediately for the "it was rigged!" simply because the winner does not align with your particular ideology is directly out of the far-right playbook and not a position you want to be in.
You must show, demonstrably and provably, that your assertion - which we all know is nonsense - is in fact true.

Oh God, please don't tell us there are that many people who actually believe they'd be competent to form a government and lead the country?! Does nobody pay any attention to their economic plans, for one thing?

Would it be more efficient to just allow community leaders or husbands to vote on behalf of women? That way they don’t need to leave the house.

The Taliban certainly think so. As do certain people in the UK, it seems.

What a weird, patronising post to say voting green is just a protest vote

I know many people who are planning to vote green in full seriousness because they support the party and their policies

Extremist?

Who would you have voted for in a choice between Reform and Greens?

Fortunately it is unlikely that we only have two choices to vote for. If that were the case I'd destroy my ballot paper.

How frightening that nearly 50% of people voted YABU. You have to wonder what’s going through the minds of all the so-called loving parents who are happy for their children to grow up in a country ruled by a hard-left extremist party.

Hard left extremist?

I didn't see anything in their manifesto that is hard left extremist. Left certainly, but nowhere near hard left extremism.

Do you even understand the phrase you used?

BunfightBetty · 27/02/2026 10:01

plutosache · 27/02/2026 09:55

But radicals of any kind (green and reform) are by definition, radical. I don’t want a radical government. I want a kind of centre party that judges each issue on its merits rather than some stupid fucking unthinking party line.

Exactly this.

If only we could have this.

You are joking me?! People do get older, I don’t know if you noticed. Are we not allowed to mention that anymore?! 😂

MissScarletInTheBedroom · 27/02/2026 10:00

adlitem · 27/02/2026 08:31

Or maybe it's a wake up call to the main political parties that they need to do better. It's always just been Conservatives vs Labour, competition has been limited, they've not really had to work terribly hard for it. Maybe people have had enough.

This, basically.

The county is no "doomed" as the OP so eloquently surmises; if it were that that doom already happened when the electorate decided it was a good idea to shoot itself in the foot over Brexit.

What we are seeing, in dramatic realtime, is nothing short of a revolution; the dismantling of the tired, old regimes. The only thing that worries me, as a left-leaning academic, is whether this country lurches further to the right or takes a step back to breathe and reflect before committing any more acts of national self-sabotage.

Mangelwurzelfortea · 27/02/2026 10:00

There's another thread about right-wingers being sore losers and I thought I was on that one for a minute.

Looking forward to the Greens resurrecting Osama Bin Laden and making him Prime Minister.

I like Greens. They are a new and improved Labour.

In what way?

RafaistheKingofClay · 27/02/2026 10:00

Boxthree · 27/02/2026 09:11

It's really interesting. Whilst most of the country has moved right, the Greens have succeeded by going very very left.

I'd like to think it's a protest against the Right Wing movement as much as against the government.

I don’t think most of the country has moved right. The electorate has been more left wing than the FPTP system would have you believe. it’s just that the left has been more fragmented.

My guess is that a lot is accounted for by the parties that have moved because Farage has split the right and everyone is chasing a proportion of the electorate that is further right than would be normal for them. Except for greens who are mopping up the left of the party left by Labour moving further right. There are some other things going on within that that have to do with Farage being extremely good at what he does.

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 27/02/2026 09:57

I think as people get older they think the world is always coming to an end. I remember my father saying the same thing in the 90/2000s.

Ageist, much 🤔

That's because Islam is at a different stage in its evolution than Christianity. It's a younger religion. We were still fighting religious wars 500 years ago and if we'd been a democracy then (we weren't) then probably it would have helped win or lose some votes.

I don't disagree with you. The problem is, though, that it's a problem.
