While the vote in Gorton and Denton may be described as a 'protest' vote the strength of both the Greens and Reform performance is something to worry all of us not just Labour.

How does it work - does an imam on a Friday say right chaps on Thursday you are voting for x - or what - perhaps other communities are missing a trick here!

It’s typically announced in the call to prayer on which way to vote. You’ve got to listen out for it.

What are you wittering on about now?

According to the 2024 GE data, there were 53 constituencies decided by the Muslim vote. 53 isn’t enough to win, but it definitely could be enough to form a coalition with a weak Labour.

If catering to the Muslim voting bloc can get them from 2 MPs to forming a government, which electoral strategist isn’t going to take that?

IF you aren't Islamophobic what is the issue with this? As I said above, approx 6.5% of the population in the UK identify as Muslim, which would mean proportional representation would be about 40 MPs. Not hugely different from this "Muslim voting bloc" that you seem so concerned about?

What exactly is the issue with Muslim MPs winning votes?

The point is we historically have not had people voting along sectarian lines in this country.

In my view it is not a positive step for communities to start supporting a particular party purely because of their religion. It is not good for community tensions or the good of the country as a whole.

I wouldn’t want to see the Tories for example saying “vote for us to protect Christian values” either.

It absolutely did. I’m sarcastically challenging the person on the claim that they’re antisemitic because no one should be supporting any party that is antisemitic. I’m not actually taking what they’ve said to be truthful.

Funny that you only had a dig at me rather than the other person who said the same as I did. Anyway - unwatching. CBA

Someone pointed out on another thread somewhere that Zack Polanski looks like the Missing Link.

Well, for a start they believe that Zionism (I.e. the belief that Israel has a right to exist) is racist. The vast majority of British Jews are Zionists.

They want to see one Palestinian state (not a two-state solution) including where Israel currently is. Where are all the Jews to go, given they have been driven out of the rest of the Middle East?

Polanski’s views are political and critical towards the Israeli government’s policies and toward Zionism as a political ideology — not anti-Semitic in terms of hatred or prejudice against Jewish people. There’s a huge difference to what you are saying and what he actually has said but is easily twisted by people who don’t really understand what has been said.

FloralDeerPattern · 27/02/2026 11:46

This thread reminds me of the hysteria over Mamdani getting elected in New York. He's a communist, he's going to make New York into an Islamic state, he is antisemitic etc. It's tragic.

abracadabra1980 · 27/02/2026 11:46

Oh grow up and educate yourself. Farage is no fan.

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 27/02/2026 11:46

DrMorbius · 27/02/2026 09:43

This is true, but not all Muslims are the same. I worked in the Middle East for 20 years and they cannot believe what we are allowing in the UK. Hence the UAE no longer allowing students to attend UK universities. A serious state sanctioned action that seems largely ignored by the media.

Its true that not all Muslims think the same way. But there are certain groups largely non ME culture that think certain ways, Gaza etc. Ignoring this fact is why the UK is doomed. Stopping people discussing this is definitely a tactic.

Ah yes and nomas does definitely use that tactic.

smallglassbottle · 27/02/2026 11:46

BunfightBetty · 27/02/2026 11:16

So you like the fact that the money would be distributed differently? Ok.

How do we pay for the increased costs their policies would impose on the nation - as an example, how do we pay for the vastly increased costs of open borders and unlimited immigration?

Do you know how much extra that will cost each year, and where that extra money will be raised from?

Tax the rich innit?! 😂

I fear the Greens more than I fear Farage.

No state or entity should have the right to exist at the expense of an entire indigenous population. You cannot have ethnic cleansing as part of your core belief and expect people not to call you out for it.

Murdering children and posting it on social media for the world to see is going to cause outrage why you think it wouldn’t is beyond me.

dottiehens · 27/02/2026 11:42

Follow the overall happening. Millionaires leaving and middle class disappearing or leaving if they can. Usually points to extreme parties like greens taking over. Think who are the biggest demographics raising and voting. It is all obvious and yes you are right to be worried.

JonesTown · 27/02/2026 11:41

OneGreySeal · 27/02/2026 11:38

The absolute length people will go to to blame Muslims when things go wrong for them.

‘multiple people in booths’ and ‘electoral fraud’ disgusting and baseless allegations and inciting hate against an entire community.

Most Muslims come from immigrant communities and have historically voted for Labour because Labour was the party for immigrants who were factory workers. Their children followed however subsequent generations are now moving away from that automatic ‘vote Labour’ attitude.

The community in g and d saw a horrible, backward, racist party about to come into power and decided to tactically keep them out, said community happens to compromise of Muslims too.

It is labour and conservatives fault that they no longer represent the people of G and D.

Why are they baseless allegations just because they benefited the party you support?

Is it a good thing for men to make voting decisions for their wives?

OneGreySeal · 27/02/2026 11:41

scottishgirl69 · 27/02/2026 11:32

Personally I would do my own research into a party rather than take it as read that they are mad, Communists and anti semitic because someone on mumsnet thinks that (and I don't vote Green).

I fear this flew over your head.

Yoonimum · 27/02/2026 11:41

Wordsmithery · 27/02/2026 08:36

I've voted Green for years and would be delighted if they were successful at the next election. Obviously a Reform win would be highly problematic though. What's your issue with the Green party exactly?

They think a man is a woman just because he says so and that he has every right to force himself into single sex spaces/services/sports etc. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 27/02/2026 11:40

Protest voting.
Tactical voting.
Voting very locally and not nationally.

Just three reasons why people may have voted Green in a by-election and may not necessarily vote Green in a general election.

To say the county is doomed because of one by-election is frankly ridiculous.

Just imagine anyone was saying this about basically any other demographic. Bloody hell, now is not a good time to be Muslim in the UK..... that's what depressing.

What I said was a critique against First Past the Post, not a critique against Muslims!

MyHappyGreenAnt · 27/02/2026 11:40

Regardless of the basis on which people voted, it seems to be true that the contest was an ugly one that no party should be proud of. However I do find it worrying that the Greens appear to have campaigned in a specifically sectarian fashion (i.e. targeting particular communities with particular messages - give it a different name if you don't like 'sectarian').

Parties that encourage people to vote, not as engaged members of the wider British community, but on the basis of religion or other more specific identities are cynical, repellent and short sighted.
