While the vote in Gorton and Denton may be described as a 'protest' vote the strength of both the Greens and Reform performance is something to worry all of us not just Labour.

The Greens are rife for a hostile take over.

They are too small to stop it if there's a coordinated attempt. Knowing how the greens and LDs are structured would actually shock many. It's fag packet level organisation out of someones shed rather than slick well thought policy process from a shiny dedicated office.

The implosion if it happens will make for much loud wailing and screaming from 'progressives'.

They have no one else to blame but themselves by with their authoritarian leanings rather than encouraging cooperation and liberal thinking and moderation.

The cognitive dissonance will make their brains explode

I don't get how people don't understand how important Gaza is from the perspective of International law, the UN and the international courts. We have been watching the decline of International law, Humanitarian law, the undermining of the International courts, Trump hoping to replace the UN with his 'Board of Peace' and people don't seem to care. For sure you will have to up your defence spending if you are happy to sit back and watch all of these safeguards destroyed because Israel.

We've been talking about it at work in the break. It's been suggested that men have hijacked their wives' postal votes and deliberately arranged postal votes for that purpose. Surely not!

The independent body monitoring this and other elections has said this election has the highest in incidence of group voting* they've ever seen.

Has to be worrying.

Group voting is where a whole group goes into the booth together. The implication is that members of the group are not only instructed how to vote but are monitored while doing so, or that one member of the group votes on behalf of all the others, coopting their voting entitlement.

What's worrying is how many people gladly suck up the blatant lies of Reform because it suits their narrative.

The amount of people who believe blatant lies about immigration figures & benefits because they are routinely fed propaganda via SM, the Daily Mail/Telegraph/Sun and GB News is truly embarrassing.

Reform ARE NOT FOR THE WORKING CLASSES. FFS, Farage wants to lower minimum wage to seven fucking quid!! He also wants to reintroduce zero hour contracts.

Yes, the immigration service in this country is a joke. It fails EVERYONE, But to say that it is the biggest issue we face and that without it we would be living in a land of joy and plenty is RIDICULOUS.

Our real enemy are tax dodgers and the companies that are allowed to increase our bills while making record profits. THE VERY PEOPLE WHO FINANCIALLY BACK REFORM!

Getting rid of THEM really would improve our lives!

At the end of the day, the majority of people in Britain are decent people and are not falling for Reform's bullshit.

And I don't disagree with this either!

It's fucking depressing!

Yep, I'm waiting to see how this all pans out. Not sure how they reconcile their conflicting views currently, trans will have to go

One of my friends son is 22. He's voting Green. The first word that he came out with about why was Gaza.

I'm disappointed not for his political leanings but because of his reasoning - or should I say - lack of. He studied politics and his grasp of politics has really surprised me because I've known him for a lot time and really thought he had more critical thinking! I really expected much more of a situation down argument! Instead I got 'Gaza'. It was a forehead slapping moment that frankly I hope he'll grow out of (I went on don't bomb Iraq marches about the same time which had a lot of Free Palestine supporters trying to hijack the purpose of the march that have long stood in my mind with their behaviour. So I do understand and support the desire to stop aggressive Western behaviour - I'm just cautious about agendas and I could articulate my arguments even then rather more than he can).

He's white. From a well off middle class background. Stands to inherit a fucking fortune.

He's not untypical.

Such a relief that they’ve lowered the voting age! 🙄

It’s not the first time, it’s been happening for a while. See as an example the MP for Harehills who won in the GE.

Are you referring to Richard Burgon, the MP for Leeds East? Harehills isn't a seat.

Populist left and populist right beat incumbent government that tried to be populist when talking about previous government.

Seems to prove that being in opposition where you can promise the world to all your special interest groups is so much easier than actually having to prioritise some over others.

Perhaps the voters (and particularly the media) need to learn to recognise that.

WhitebaitLane · 27/02/2026 13:04

My theory is that the muslim voters seek to dominate the Greens from the inside like the Tras did with gender woo. They will remove gender woo and replace it with completely pro Gaza.

It would be interesting to watch when that shit hits the fan.

After reading that the Reform candidate stated that childless women should pay more tax he and his party can bog right off. Nice way to make women who for reasons beyond their control were unable to have children feel even more rubbish about their situation.

He didn’t say that. He said there should be tax incentives to support women to have children as we currently have a falling birth rate and it’s mainly due to young people not being able to afford them.

Venicelagoon · 27/02/2026 13:03

The issue with the Green Party is their idea that its OK to legalise cocaine. Also according to a Moslem lady on GB news just now the Imans are telling men to make their wives vote in a certain way. Thats not right.

In the constituency only 28% are Muslim.

That means 72% are non Muslim.

I doubt we'll ever have a breakdown of figures in terms of the religion of people who voted or not, but given that Greens won around 50% more votes than the nearest rival, AND the points raised here about Muslims potentially not liking some of the Greens policies, maybe - just maybe - this win wasn't just about Gaza?

You think not being able to get a GP appointment has nothing to do with mass immigration?

No. I think it’s underfunding the NHS. In my local surgery, they’ve just made GPs redundant- how is that to do with immigration?

MadeInGrimsby · 27/02/2026 12:55

I was very disappointed with Zach Polanski's victory speech. It was all about having a go at Labour.
He never referred to Reform. He never spoke of Green policies. It was all about doing better than Labour, which I thought was a shame

I was threatened with beheading, says MP ousted over Gaza stance
Kate Hollern reveals she endured ‘very distressing’ few weeks on general election campaign trail

A former Labour MP who lost her seat to a pro-Palestinian independent has said she was threatened with beheading before the general election.
Kate Hollern, who represented Blackburn from 2015 to 2024, said she had endured a “very distressing” few weeks on the campaign trail in the run-up to the vote 18 months ago.
Ms Hollern lost her seat to Adnan Hussain, one of five independents elected to the Commons on a pro-Palestinian ticket, by 132 votes.
Muslim voters deserted Labour in their droves after Sir Keir Starmer refused to back an immediate ceasefire in Gaza in the war that followed the Oct 7 attacks on Israel.
In an interview with Aleeza Isa, an independent Blackburn journalist, Ms Hollern said: “In fighting elections for 30 years, I have never experienced harassment, intimidation and bullying as I did at that election, and the weeks running up to it were very distressing.
“At one point I was told I was going to be beheaded. At another point I was told that I worshipped a false god.
“The tension was building, but it always does – but when somebody tells you you’re going to be beheaded and you see a picture of yourself on social media covered in blood, of course it worries you, of course it does. And when people are screaming at you that you have got blood on your hands, it is quite intimidating.”

So just her word for it then?

I've voted Green for years and would be delighted if they were successful at the next election. Obviously a Reform win would be highly problematic though. What's your issue with the Green party exactly?

Would you vote for a party who want to reduce defence spending and have open borders?

I don’t really know where to start with that question, I don’t think they’ve actually thought through the consequences of many of their policies. Take their opposition to ‘private landlords’ and their policy to ban them. I agree that the system needs to be improved, but currently around 12 million people live in private rentals, that’s roughly 5 million homes. How is this going to be achieved? Are they planning on forcing private landlords to sell their homes to their local council/housing association, or are they simply going to build five million houses? Where would the money come from to pay for that, and where would all the skilled builders/trades come from ? Just one example of idealistic policies that would be almost impossible to achieve.

Just for context, in the 2019 election, 80% of Muslims voted for Labour. Thats 3 million votes.

Labour won the 2024 election with 10 million votes.

The voter turnout/use of postal votes within the Muslim community is unbelievably high. Within the general population voter turnout is approx 40-50%. I think the overall turnout in Gorton/Denton was 47% which was reported as high, presumably because if a motivated section of the population. Use of postal votes will have also helped, being simpler to organise coordinated voting.
