While the vote in Gorton and Denton may be described as a 'protest' vote the strength of both the Greens and Reform performance is something to worry all of us not just Labour.

I agree, I think Labour are doing as well as could be expected in the current climate I just think they need to be doing something more so that people stick with them for another term.

Yes, true. It'll be something of a jolt, no bad thing.

I don't get how people don't understand how important Gaza is from the perspective of International law, the UN and the international courts. We have been watching the decline of International law, Humanitarian law, the undermining of the International courts, Trump hoping to replace the UN with his 'Board of Peace' and people don't seem to care. For sure you will have to up your defence spending if you are happy to sit back and watch all of these safeguards destroyed because Israel.

I don't understand how Gaza has been on the front page since 2023 because Israel, but a murderous regime slaughtered tens of thousands on the streets of Tehran recently, and it was crickets. Is being murdered at Israel's hands somehow worse than being murdered at the behest of the Ayatollah? Are we happy to studiously ignore Muslim deaths - including children - as long as they're being slaughtered by other Muslims? Or by anyone "not Israel"?

I am not at all happy to sit back and watch international law being dismantled, but between Trump/Putin/Xi and the smorgasbord of bad actors in the ME, it's rapidly reaching the point where it won't help us anyway.

It's not uncommon for a government to do badly half way through a term of office.
The Greens had a strong message "punish Labour for Gaza" which was obviously popular.

Open borders=huge increases in population=added pressure on water and sewage infrastructure, the road network, the amount of waste we produce, and most importantly the environment. The building of multiple new homes and developments (Labour have relaxed planning law as it is) has a terrible impact on the ecosystem. Green policy is contradictory and incoherent (and that's without getting into their even more crackpot cultural and gender policies).

What's worrying is how many people gladly suck up the blatant lies of Reform because it suits their narrative.

The amount of people who believe blatant lies about immigration figures & benefits because they are routinely fed propaganda via SM, the Daily Mail/Telegraph/Sun and GB News is truly embarrassing.

Reform ARE NOT FOR THE WORKING CLASSES. FFS, Farage wants to lower minimum wage to seven fucking quid!! He also wants to reintroduce zero hour contracts.

Yes, the immigration service in this country is a joke. It fails EVERYONE, But to say that it is the biggest issue we face and that without it we would be living in a land of joy and plenty is RIDICULOUS.

Our real enemy are tax dodgers and the companies that are allowed to increase our bills while making record profits. THE VERY PEOPLE WHO FINANCIALLY BACK REFORM!

Getting rid of THEM really would improve our lives!

At the end of the day, the majority of people in Britain are decent people and are not falling for Reform's bullshit.

Sadly come to the realisation that most people are generally stupid. They actually believe the privately educated, multi millionaire, ex metal trader actually care for the common man.

Communism (in disguise) is NOT progressive.

Is it not social democracy? A bit like the Scandinavian countries?

One of my friends son is 22. He's voting Green. The first word that he came out with about why was Gaza.

I'm disappointed not for his political leanings but because of his reasoning - or should I say - lack of. He studied politics and his grasp of politics has really surprised me because I've known him for a lot time and really thought he had more critical thinking! I really expected much more of a situation down argument! Instead I got 'Gaza'. It was a forehead slapping moment that frankly I hope he'll grow out of (I went on don't bomb Iraq marches about the same time which had a lot of Free Palestine supporters trying to hijack the purpose of the march that have long stood in my mind with their behaviour. So I do understand and support the desire to stop aggressive Western behaviour - I'm just cautious about agendas and I could articulate my arguments even then rather more than he can).

He's white. From a well off middle class background. Stands to inherit a fucking fortune.

He's not untypical.

You sound incredibly jealous of 22 due to his financial circumstance.

Well I certainly don't want the greens (who don't know what a woman is) or reform gain any kind of power, nor do I want the tory's or the Lib dems so I really hope Labour gets it's finger out and starts delivering results soon! Labour is still the best of a very bad bunch.

It is.

I don't know any definition of communism that has open borders. It's really not communism. It's liberalism - there's nothing liberal about communism.

Just for context, in the 2019 election, 80% of Muslims voted for Labour. Thats 3 million votes.

Labour won the 2024 election with 10 million votes.

The voter turnout/use of postal votes within the Muslim community is unbelievably high. Within the general population voter turnout is approx 40-50%. I think the overall turnout in Gorton/Denton was 47% which was reported as high, presumably because if a motivated section of the population. Use of postal votes will have also helped, being simpler to organise coordinated voting.

lol lol..some random statistics and alot of inference. You may want to have another stab at GCSE maths.

In the constituency only 28% are Muslim.

That means 72% are non Muslim.

I doubt we'll ever have a breakdown of figures in terms of the religion of people who voted or not, but given that Greens won around 50% more votes than the nearest rival, AND the points raised here about Muslims potentially not liking some of the Greens policies, maybe - just maybe - this win wasn't just about Gaza?

The turnout was less than 50%. The Greens received around 40% of the votes which equates to less than 20% of the eligible electorate voting for them.

That means that if 2/3rds of the Muslims voted for them they could have achieved this result without a single non Muslim vote.

It would be very interesting to see the ethnic split of votes although I doubt that is information that will ever be released.

It would also be informative to see the % of active voters amongst various groups. I suspect that a lot of minority groups with high voting % will create what on the face of it looks like quite perverse results.

If we had compulsory voting similar to Australia I think we’d have very different outcomes.

If fusion is to become a reality then losing hydrogen isn't something to worry about. Fusion could produce a huge amount of energy from a small amount of fuel.

Helium as a by-product is a good thing. We're running short on it. https://www.earth.com/news/global-helium-supply-running-low-race-is-on-to-prevent-the-next-shortage/

Cost of it is going up (ahem), with consequent effects on industry that requires it as your link says, and also mentions that it is lost, permanently, to space when it escapes as waste. (availability and cost might also be behind the various exploding party balloons on you tube when people sub hydrogen for helium - that or stupidity)

Perhaps we have more than enough hydrogen to service every biological system on the planet for the foreseeable and spare whatever is required for energy needs, and no detriment to atmospheric balance when it floats away as helium.

I don’t really know where to start with that question, I don’t think they’ve actually thought through the consequences of many of their policies. Take their opposition to ‘private landlords’ and their policy to ban them. I agree that the system needs to be improved, but currently around 12 million people live in private rentals, that’s roughly 5 million homes. How is this going to be achieved? Are they planning on forcing private landlords to sell their homes to their local council/housing association, or are they simply going to build five million houses? Where would the money come from to pay for that, and where would all the skilled builders/trades come from ? Just one example of idealistic policies that would be almost impossible to achieve.

A very quick Google provides the answer to your question:

'Under the terms of their new policy, the Greens would put more regulation and taxes on private rentals to make it difficult for landlords to make a profit, while boosting housebuilding by councils.
It would use existing Green policies such as imposing rent controls, ending buy-to-let mortgages and giving councils the 'right to buy' a rental property when it is sold at a discounted price.
The Greens would set up a state-owned housing manufacturer "to mass produce high quality mass council housing for local authorities".'

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwy9zqzp44vo

So, slowly make changes to make being a private landlord not profitable. Have the council buy up rented homes, presumably with tenants in situ. And build more council housing.

A 'To Let' sign with a picture of a house in the background

Greens back plan to 'abolish' private landlords

A motion passed at its party conference called for the party "to seek the effective abolition of private landlordism" while backing building more council houses.

I don't want Greens in or Reform, I am scared about the damage/change they would do to the country.

I hate the Tories for what they have created, they did this to us by lieing so much that now we only have an extreme right/left party choice.

It’s Labour shedding votes left and right rn.

Quine0nline · 27/02/2026 13:24

It is not unreasonable to be concerned about "entryism" into political parties. I recall Militant and the labour party in the 1980s. Did it cost them power? Yes. Did it force out moderates? Did it make them unelectable? Yes. They did get them out, but an established party at a time and culture which was different.
With new parties and totally new personalities, I see a risk that a determined group could get into a party to change from within and rewrite the agenda.

SnackQueen · 27/02/2026 13:23

We are totally and utterly doomed.

There is nothing green about the Greens now. They don’t give a flying fvk about the environment or the climate. It’s now just a wasps nest for Jew haters, terrorist sympathisers, Islamic fundamentalists, misogynists, sexual perverts and a band of historically ignorant useful idiots suffering from suicidal empathy derangement syndrome.

I thought Hannah’s speech was brilliant, it mirrors what everyone here and elsewhere is saying , working hard and having nothing to show, not being able to live a nice life , afford house, all while rich are getting richer , shes speaking out for her community.
