While the vote in Gorton and Denton may be described as a 'protest' vote the strength of both the Greens and Reform performance is something to worry all of us not just Labour.

It's a good thing that both Labour and Conservatives may see that kneejerk dog-whistle politics repel more than they attract. I'd like to think they'd learn from this but they probably won't

ShesRunningOutTheDoor · 27/02/2026 14:48

The only good news is this is a by election where protest votes are common. I think policies of open borders / encouraging migration, self ID and legalising drugs will be scrutinised at a general election. The country would collapse under the greens. Any far left or far right party spells bad news for women.

Moonlightfrog · 27/02/2026 14:28

Me too

So how do you think their long term vision of a world without borders will work out then?

Where will all the houses come from? Just build all over the English countryside, or increase council tax so much that people can only afford to live in tiny boxes?

And are how do you feel about your children and generations to come paying reparations for slavery when they played absolutely no part in the slave trade? Payments that will be going to benefit people who weren’t ever slaves themselves? Where does that end? Should we be demanding reparations from Italy for what the Romans did?

These people are just living in Lala land and have no proper understanding of the real world consequences some of these loony policies can bring.

The strength of the Green vote doesn't bother me in the slightest. I think this is what happens when you take voters for granted. Burnham might have won that seat as well. Labour lost it for themselves.

Can't see any lessons being learned from Starmers response though

anniegun · 27/02/2026 14:44

We need better politics- the Greens offer that. The mains parties have failed. Reform are racists

Lifesd · 27/02/2026 14:44

you are not wrong the uk is royally fucked

Firry · 27/02/2026 14:43

Swiftie1878 · 27/02/2026 14:33

No - if you read the Green Party’s policies, they are communist.

The Scandinavian countries have excellent public services because everyone works and pays taxes. A strange concept to our army of benefit claimants here. Greens think they can have excellent public services by printing more money and taxing ‘the rich’ a policy abandoned everywhere else as it just reduces a countries tax take, not increases.

They have no answers whatsoever to the serious questions facing this country. They are a clown party. Just like reform. Two cheeks of the same arse.

My issue with Green Party: they no longer give a flying wotsit about the environment. So they should get rid of the Green name.

They want to legalise all drugs with education on drug-taking starting a primary school.

Self-id without question, including in sport.

Open borders aim - but in the meantime welcoming to any migrant + family members, plus house and income provision.

And where do they think those immigrants are going to live? In houses that will be built on the fields and woodland their party is supposed to protect!!!!

My local woods have been hacked down and replaced with two new estates, a massive estate has been built at the other end of the village, and now we’re going to have an extra 400 homes built on the fields in the centre of the village. Judging by the languages spoken, I’d say at least half the people who’ve moved onto those new estates were born outside the U.K.. I used to vote Green because I thought they were the party who’d protect the countryside. In fact, they’re the biggest enemy the countryside could ever have. The sight of that blonde woman dancing and grinning like a brainwashed lunatic was enough for me. I will never vote for them again.

The independent body monitoring this and other elections has said this election has the highest in incidence of group voting* they've ever seen.

Has to be worrying.

Group voting is where a whole group goes into the booth together. The implication is that members of the group are not only instructed how to vote but are monitored while doing so, or that one member of the group votes on behalf of all the others, coopting their voting entitlement.

They're not entirely an "independent body" they are self appointed and at no time during when the polling stations were actually open did they actually raise the issue with the electoral staff or the police.

Is it not social democracy? A bit like the Scandinavian countries?

No - if you read the Green Party’s policies, they are communist.

To be fair, my seven year old asked me what drugs are as his friend at school says he takes them all the time. Perhaps children should be educated about it earlier.
legalising would certainly stop a lot of the county lines gangs. However, I appreciate this needs to be looked at very carefully as it hasn’t worked well in many other countries/states so far

I read a report that Starmer voted the other way? I'll check.
I'm sure he wants to beat Reform. My point is that he made no reference to them in his victory speech.

I don’t think so on his vote. Only Lucy Powell voted the other way.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2026 14:28

I do think the Green party is in a massive state of flux right now that isn't fully appreciated. It's an uneasy alliance between two groups which really aren't obvious bedfellows. At some point that leads to crisis as we've seen in other parties both here and abroad. If you don't understand this you are missing a massive potential problem on the horizon.

For all its faults (of which there are an extraordinary amount) Reform do not have the same level of this. They have competing ego issues instead to contend with as well as a variety of people who are scandals waiting to happen. But for the most part I don't see a full on civil war in the same way. I see massive bickering and infighting between individuals instead. But on policy? Not so much to the same extent where it looks like an impossible square to circle.

Moonlightfrog · 27/02/2026 14:28

Wordsmithery · 27/02/2026 08:36

I've voted Green for years and would be delighted if they were successful at the next election. Obviously a Reform win would be highly problematic though. What's your issue with the Green party exactly?

Me too

anotherside · 27/02/2026 14:23

And it was doomed under Thatcher and under Major and under Blair and then under 13 years of the Tories fucking everything up. What else is new.

The least worst solution is for Labour to get a new leader with a backbone, and then to knuckle down for the next decade and try and sort out some of the mess left by the Tories and the Tory rats that have jumped shit to Nigel’s Temu Tory Party.

glitterpaperchain · 27/02/2026 14:23

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2026 14:19

I thought it was self explanatory from the context of the conversation about entrism and conflicts about the divide within the green party between white young progressives and often older Muslims on policy, but hey let's just always assume the worst.

No, you directly responded to me and alluded to things you didn't actually talk about, and then said people are determined to scream racism? You sound a little unhinged honestly, I don't know what your comment about assuming the worst is about?

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2026 14:19

What next, let me guess..you'll say you have a black friend.

Adios..

Well yes, and my eldest child is 3/4 black. I’m mixed, I have a Nigerian mother, Hausa precisely. What is the relevance of having black friends, we’re not even talking about black people?

Like wtf is your problem for real?

Genuinely, there is something not right. I’m going back to work because I have better things to do. Maybe you should too?

glitterpaperchain · 27/02/2026 14:16

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2026 14:13

Because of immigration patterns / voting patterns in Gorton and who tends to go into being a landlord and who seems to be voting Green and what the green policy is in this area and how it's a clash between self interest and party policy.

Cos it's relevant to talking about the future of where Green policy might end up going on the subject of private landlords.

Honest to god I'm not being a dick here. I'm pointing out a conflict that at some point that's going to come to a head if the greens do get power at Westminster and do try to implement their manifesto.

The number of people absolutely determined to scream racism is astonishing!

Right, but you didn't actually talk about any of that in your post.

I think that's probably how they ought to position themselves. Whereas Hannah Spencer made good points in her speech, the more radical aspects of their manifesto may be harder to sell.
As I understand it, Starmer didn't block Burnham? It was a majority against him, though.

Yes it was a majority vote with Starmer as one of them I think.

Hannah spoke well on winning. Re your pp on Polanski and his views on Labour he’s been pretty clear on wanting to replace them, so he will go for them but he also talks about beating Reform.

Are you in employment at all? How long have you been policing thread?

You are acting very weirdly, you picked up on my extremely inoffensive comment that said basically nothing at all, and seem to be out to start a fight with everyone. Everything ok at home?

Also, I’m not white, and I don’t have bigoted views towards myself or my children/family. Why do you want, a selfie? Get lost.

What's worrying is how many people gladly suck up the blatant lies of Reform because it suits their narrative.

The amount of people who believe blatant lies about immigration figures & benefits because they are routinely fed propaganda via SM, the Daily Mail/Telegraph/Sun and GB News is truly embarrassing.

Reform ARE NOT FOR THE WORKING CLASSES. FFS, Farage wants to lower minimum wage to seven fucking quid!! He also wants to reintroduce zero hour contracts.

Yes, the immigration service in this country is a joke. It fails EVERYONE, But to say that it is the biggest issue we face and that without it we would be living in a land of joy and plenty is RIDICULOUS.

Our real enemy are tax dodgers and the companies that are allowed to increase our bills while making record profits. THE VERY PEOPLE WHO FINANCIALLY BACK REFORM!

Getting rid of THEM really would improve our lives!

At the end of the day, the majority of people in Britain are decent people and are not falling for Reform's bullshit.

I understand The suggestion regarding the minimum wage is for the under 21’s to make it more attractive for businesses to employ younger people. Currently we have the highest youth unemployment in Europe.

pocketpairs · 27/02/2026 14:07

You're clearly a deform voter, who holds bigoted views black / brown / muslim communities. Clearly you have forgotten what you wrote so let me remind you "yes, I agree with your theory that Muslims voters want to take over the Greens from the inside, and turn it into a pro Gaza party..can't wait till shit hits the fan"

So stand by my comment WhiteBait..you're a bigot / islamophobe.
