While the vote in Gorton and Denton may be described as a 'protest' vote the strength of both the Greens and Reform performance is something to worry all of us not just Labour.

As pp asked further up thread how are the Greens proposing to pay for the social housing that is needed? Houses can't be magicked out of thin air. Genuine question.

The Snp in Scotland have managed to build a lot more council housing in Scotland than Labour did here when they ran Holyrood. Not enough but they've managed it

I used musk because he has the most money in the world so a good example of these mega billionaires. I actually googled after and he actually had nearly 900 billion!!! Wild!

I am not sure what is difficult to understand in what I am saying. Its circulation isn’t it. The money is already out of circulation when it’s locked up at the bottom of billionaires bank accounts. So if we want to redistribute it why not just do it. You don’t need to take it from them because they aren’t going to use it anyway. It makes sense to me. If you can tell me the bit you don’t understand then might be able to try again.

We bring it back into circulation by taxing it. That's what taxes are.

Yes some people need to rent, so the Greens want to increase social housing so they rent from the council, at a fair rate, rather than private landlords who rent homes for profit. Honestly do people really just loudly oppose greens without any actual knowledge of their policies? Silly question, yes they do it's all over this thread

I'm not the biggest fan of the Greens but I wouldn't just write them off as being awful. I actually joined them a few years ago but they don't have much presence in my area. Gillian McKay is my regional MSP but they have no MPs and no councillors in my particular area and never have had

I live in social housing and I have spoken about this on another thread. I only got a council flat because I took a flat in a very hard to let area - my brother bought a flat two years ago after a relationship split (long story but the split was acrimonious and he eventually walked away from his share of the house and started again)

He was lucky that he could afford to buy a flat because house prices here aren't that bad - not everyone is that lucky

'We would introduce a land value tax to shift tax from tenants to landlords; increase taxes on empty properties to incentivise bringing them back into use; and introduce national insurance on rental income so landlords pay the same tax on their earnings as everyone else.'

That makes zero sense. And why Musk? He’s a total irrelevance to UK politics.

Well the greens ain't coming for my pension that's for sure. I've just checked my pension pot (40k). To be fair I have two that I haven't transferred over to the site where all my pensions are consolidated (I paid into one work pension for five years and I would lose benefits if I transferred that over ).

Unless you're one of the thousands who can't afford to buy a home. Some people need to rent, for various reasons. In any case there will be lots more properties available on the open market come May so I guess this Labour government got something right.

We don’t need ideological dreams, we need reality. Realistic actionable ideas.

No I am saying super rich people aren’t ever going to use that money. Say for example Elon with his 100 billion or whatever it is now. He’s never going to use 90 billion of that. That’s pretty easy to say as it’s just impossible. So rather than take 90 billion from him. You could just print 90 billion. It doesnt actually make any difference. But people would say we can’t do that - not sure why - inflation I assume? But if that’s the case redistributing wealth wouldn’t work either.

Does that make sense?

Abolishing private landlords sounds like an absolutely brilliant idea

Completely open borders, leave NATO (gift to Putin!) abolish private landlords for starters.

Are you aware that two of these are not actually green party policies?

And 'abolish landlords' is a shorthand for a very detailed plan to make homes accessible and fair

It’s a single issue voting determinant for some (fortunately a tiny minority) women.

Its not my single issue, but i would never vote for a party that fully embraced gender ideology, any more than I would vote for a party that enshrined tenets of scientology or flat earthism into law and ejected any dissenters on those issues from the party.

And its not just women who take that stance, I'm male.

must be nice having a pension pot of a million, no doubt you earnt it with no privilege at all.

I thought she meant house plus pension? Even a few Labour supporters probably have that.

Wordsmithery · 27/02/2026 08:36

I've voted Green for years and would be delighted if they were successful at the next election. Obviously a Reform win would be highly problematic though. What's your issue with the Green party exactly?

You choose to ignore the Scottish Greens policy - Do you think it's "entirely reasonable" they should help themselves to roughly £13,500 per annum out of my pension pot until it drops below £1 million?

Why would you need a one million pension pot? Are you planning to live to 120?

Actually no. I was responding to posts on here who said it was about Palestine.

What a miserable fucking thread

I apologise if I misread your post but it sounded very much as though you were saying that if Muslims hadn’t voted on Gaza they had probably voted on immigration. Which would definitely be a very weird (and racist) assessment of the priorities of Muslim voters. As well as the separation of ‘muslim
voters’ from ‘voters’

I think no borders are their biggest insane one. I know they say now is not the time but it’s their end goal. Still I just cannot take anyone seriously who thinks that’s feasible. If we don’t have borders and citizenship then we don’t have democracy.

Not sure I like the idea of wealth tax tbh. For truly wealthy people who this would apply to in my mind - well that’s just a number or an asset and that’s locked away. So why not just print more anyway. You don’t actually have to take it away from them because they have so much they would never actually use that anyway. We don’t because printing money causes problems. So I don’t know how to square this circle and when I think it through it’s not clear to me. I also don’t think they are talking about billionaires - because they can’t get their money anyway so who are they talking about.

Their trans polices also don’t agree with. I am a woman not a gender. Protections, recognition, words to describe and acknowledgement of my sex class is important to me.

I think they are the headline ones to me. I do also feel uncomfortable about the Gaza stuff and also about the cosying up to Islam and how does that tally with LGBT rights. Theirs inconsistent value set there - unless the value aim is just ‘power’.

Maybe it was on…
the NHS
Housing
care homes
Jobs
taxation
other social policy
the cut of Zack Polanski’s suit
or any one of the other policies that any voter votes for.

you make it sound as though Muslim voters are one homogenous block of people rather than a diverse bunch of various people.

You make it sound as though all a Muslim could possibly care about is Palestine or immigration.

you do know that that is racist, don’t you?

You’re wasting your time there. She has no idea what any of their policies are if she thinks the Green Party and Reform are essentially the same and doesn’t think the former are on the left of the political spectrum.

Lots of people on this thread have no idea what their actual policies are, it's very frustrating. It's very easy information to find
