To wonder why right wingers such sore losers?

Whether it’s Trump crowing about elections being stolen (although not those he actually won) and Farage moaning about “sectarian voting and cheating” in Denton and Gorton, why can’t they just take a defeat on the chin? You win some, you lose some. Congratulate the winner, reflect, and then move on to the next one.

For Trump it’s a somewhat winning strategy. Many Americans doubt the reliability of the votes he lost.

Labour are hypocrites on this. No wonder they’re shedding votes to the left and right.

In what way are they hypocrites?

Pardon?

I’m not sure which bit you don’t understand but you said:

Islamic or Christian demagoguery, its neither here nor there because both are equally as undesirable, but the latter is an order of magnitude more likely and more realistic in the UK.

And tried to compare the US ‘Christo-fascists’ with Muslims in terms of influence.

I was pointing out that you need to look at who you can’t criticise to determine who holds the power. We don’t see people suffering consequences for criticising Christianity in the UK. We do however see plenty examples of punishments of people here for criticising or acting against Islam in any way.

Look at the ‘Islamophobia’ definition Starmer has promised the Muslims which will affect our freedom of speech even more than it is now.

We have seen this eeek the CPS fail in its second desperate attempt to bring in a blasphemy law by the back door and they not only tried to convict a Turkish man for burning a Koran but refused to accept the original not guilty verdict and spent vast sums of money appealing and trying to overturn the verdict.

It’s not like our CPS has no rapists to prosecute and the courts are in such a dire state that Lammy is cancelling our rights to justice but hey, let’s go after the Koran burner (while ignoring the Muslim man who tried to stab him to death) and use your even more court time. Why?

For such a minority, Muslims hold a great deal of power over us already. That’s what I meant. It’s just a shame so many people can’t see what’s happening. Refusing to listen to the Islamists who are telling us of their plans very clearly. Is it arrogance that leads people to deny this and refuse to listen to the earn v ms even being given by other Muslims like Barkness Falkner? Ignorance? I don’t know.

Still not to blame for the Islamic extremists who hate Western society and want to kill us.

I can’t believe you are blaming us for the murderous extremists. Is Shabana Mahmood also to blame for the Manchester Bombing?

Today she said this:

Speaking to The Telegraph this week in Denmark, Ms Mahmood said that Labour could not ignore the issue of immigration.
She said: “The levels of illegal migration are putting immense strain on our country, and our public services – creating division within communities across the country. Illegal migration is undermining the contract between government and its citizens – eroding support for the asylum system entirely.

Pretty much Reforms position too.

Labour are hypocrites on this. No wonder they’re shedding votes to the left and right.

You might want to consider which group we are not allowed to criticise. They are the ones that hold the power.

Pardon?

They were the Brexit party then - or maybe still UKIP - I can’t keep track. Same deeply unpleasant rhetoric though.

Trump is obviously a crass and bizarre individual, but in America this century, there have been riots and violence when the left-wing party has lost, not when the right-wing party has lost.

i think the Gorton and Denton concerns were raised by the independent election observers.

That’s not what I recall of the election Trump lost

DeepBlueDeer · 27/02/2026 22:54

I only mildly agree with the premise of the thread.

Everyone complains when their party loses, but there's something of a trend to the right (really, mainly the US, with Reform now dabbling) in blaming their loss on electoral process integrity. In the US/Trump context, those claims are false and dangerous.

In the case of this by-election, I don't think Reform can properly say that they lost because of cheating. Even if the 12% instance of family voting in the sample translates to ~12% of all voters, the only way that would mean "Reform lost because of cheating" is if ~100% of the family voters voted Green but, had they gone in separately, Reform would have won those votes in a landslide. Basically, it would require family members who individually would have voted Reform mutually bullying each other into voting Green instead. That's absurd.

BUT it is absolutely right to report and criticize polling stations for allowing family voting to occur, and failure to properly uphold laws surrounding the electoral process is hugely damaging to perceptions of electoral integrity.

Did Reform lose due to cheating? Almost certainly not, but had the margin been narrower then the validity of the win reasonably could be called into question. I do think their complaints go too far but they are not wrong to put the issue under a microscope. I hope we see much better enforcement going forwards.

Lets be clear then, she blamed the Brexit Party/Reform for the Manchester Arena bombing. And you jumped in to make that clear, she wasn't blaming Matt Goodwin personally AKSHULLY. She was blaming Reform.

So this country takes in asylum seekers who raise children who go on to commit appalling acts of Islamist terrorism, one of them killing himself in the process such is the extent of his desire to murder as many of your children as possible. The other remains remains in prison, maiming prison staff with boiling hot oil for the fun of it having helped his brother to murder as many children as he could. And all of this is our own fault. You jumped in to make that clear, Hannah Spencer wasn't saying it was specifically Matt Goodwin's fault. She was saying all of this happened, and continues to happen, because the native population engaged in subjectively divisive rhetoric. You couldn't let that post go without clarifying that. Well, thank you I suppose.

BIossomtoes · 27/02/2026 21:35

JustSomeWaferThinHam · 27/02/2026 21:32

Well seeing as the Manchester bombing was in 2017 and Reform didn’t even exist until 2018, I’d say that’s also wrong.

The only people to blame for Islamist terror attacks are the Islamist extremists. Not us.

JustSomeWaferThinHam · 27/02/2026 17:09

I’m not sure voting for people based on their looks is very sensible.

She thinks men can become women and blamed Matt Goodwin for the Manchester bombing. Not the brightest clearly.

I didn't mean her physical appearance for heaven's sake.

Happyher · 27/02/2026 21:19

Because they’re all about hate and negativity

JustSomeWaferThinHam · 27/02/2026 21:18

BIossomtoes · 27/02/2026 17:17

She didn’t blame Goodwin for it at all. He twisted her words - she blamed Reform for whipping up division and tarring all brown people with the same brush. It’s a bit different, isn’t it?

I watched her say it, she blamed “people like you” - ie Matt.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 27/02/2026 12:52

Take a look at what's happening in certain US States where the Christo-fascists are running riot.

Before you highlight that the UK is not the US, I'll just remind you that the Reform lot are aping absolutely everything MAGA has said and done over the past while, including the "Christian values" stuff, and are openly stating they will destroy existing Equalities legislation and pull the UK from the ECHR.

Islamic or Christian demagoguery, its neither here nor there because both are equally as undesirable, but the latter is an order of magnitude more likely and more realistic in the UK.

Posters stating with great authority that that voters were breaking the rules at polling stations, yet no one has any evidence, and no one has reported anything to the police. So let’s stop spreading misinformation, because at it’s nothing but desperate wild claims. And no actually there was no “independent”’ observers that made this complaint, and as I stated there has been no official report of election fraud.

Oh and the racism on this thread is disgusting but sadly the norm now on mumsnet.

Well one chap actually admitted it on Sky tv and there’s quite a bit of research that considers that some people from particular countries that don’t have much respect for democracy don’t really understand it here either.

Erm, have you forgotten the insurrection on January 6th?? A deranged right-wing mob broke into the Capitol and denounced the election as “stolen”.

Can you give examples of when left-wing voters have rioted after an election?

One here in 2015 - albeit only a small riot;

I don’t think it’s right wingers so much as it is populists. They have to stir up people to feel like something was stolen from them, create more feelings of division in society.

I remember Labour supporters throwing a strop after they failed to win the 2017 general election. Multiple protests in the weeks following the election, whipped up by Corbyn and others:

I agree with this. I'd even hold my nose and vote for a moderate Tory to keep Reform out of my constituency, and I've never voted Conservative ever before. I live in a historically very marginal Tory/ Labour seat.

That’s where I am too. I live in what used to be one of the safest Tory seats in the country, their majority is now down to around 2k. Fortunately the new (since 2024) MP is a decent, hardworking moderate so, although it would pain me, I wouldn’t lose sleep over voting for him if it meant keeping Reform out.
